As I attempted to search for an article on how prenatal care is associated with child’s health I initially did a google search and typed “prenatal care”. I was overwhelmed with the number of articles and websites available to choose from. I thought it was necessary to be specific in what exactly I wanted to research and that’s when I typed in “prenatal care” and “health” into the search bar. Once I found a website that looked resourceful and appealing I made sure that it was published by an educational institution or a professional organization. The clearest indicator of a peer reviewed journal are citations and references indicated at the end of the journal. Although the article “What is prenatal care and why is it important?” included factual information and was resourceful, scientific research should be considered when researching how prenatal care correlates to your child’s health. “What is prenatal care and why is it important?” is an informative article; providing us with information on how preconception and prenatal care plays a role in your child’s development. The article goes on to discuss preliminary measures necessary for a healthy pregnancy some of which include: attaining a healthy weight, increasing your daily intake of folic acid, avoid drinking, smoking, and the use of drugs. Furthermore, pregnancy complications such as high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia/eclampsia are also discussed briefly and how it affects an infant’s development. By managing your weight and following a nutritious diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding potential harmful substances like lead and radiation can decrease the risk of complications during pregnancy and protect the infant’s development (National Institutes of Health, 2014). Pregnant women with existing conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure are at risk of preeclampsia/eclampsia therefor should take extra precautions monitoring their condition (National Institutes of Health, 2014).
