How Religion Affected America's Society

Religion has shaped and played a big part of America since colonial times. In colonial times there was religious event and groups that affected the American’s society we know today. A religious event that made an impact was The Great Awakening, the revival of Christianity. Two religious groups were the Puritans and the Quakers. The Puritans came to the country to reform the Church of England and they tried to establish a temporary government in the new country until an official government arrived. The Quakers came to North America to avoid religious persecution and were prominent slave traders. Religion affected American’s society by spreading Christianity through The Great Awakening, the Puritans founding the American democracy, and the Quakers believing in equality.
The spread of Christianity through the Great Awakening has impacted American’s society through converting and inspiring other people. The Great Awakening started in 1730s and ended in 1770s, sweeping through the American colonies. Jonathan Edward preached and converted 300 people and inspired other preachers. George Whitefield traveled and preached. His revival would led to many conversions and also inspire many other preachers. …show more content…

The Puritans did not believe in hierarchy. They had town meeting in churches and the decision were made by majority rule. The Puritans tried to set-up a temporary government called the Mayflower Compact in 1620. The Mayflower Compact was the early birth of America’s democracy. This shaped the America we know today by leading Americans into democracy. Without democracy in America, we would have become a monarchy/hierarchy. If the Puritans did not started the foundation of democracy then we probably would have not had a constitutional democracy, a constitution that has the rights of Americans and the government being divide into three different branches: executive, judicial, and
