I still remember the last sentence my parents said to me when I was about to board the airplane which leaves China for America: “take care of yourself and be safe.” However, the experience of taking a campus bus for the first time was not safe at all. As a new, international student, I arrived on campus one week earlier before class started, so there are actually very few people on the bus heading to the marketplace around 2 pm when I got on. After I sat down, a black woman moved from her original seat to my left seat. A couple of minutes passed by, she started talking to me, asking me where I was going, and I told her I was going to Best Buy. Then she enthusiastically told me I should get off the bus after two more stops, which makes me …show more content…
For example, the keys the university residence halls use are all stamped “Property of University of Illinois-Do Not Duplicate" so that there is no duplicate keys; the keys are all coded with core numbers instead of room numbers so that even if students lost their keys criminals cannot match the keys with a particular room. All residence halls entrance requires card access so that non-university faculty and students cannot enter the residence halls and all users of campus buildings are instructed not to prop open the doors for other people. In addition, residence halls are focus areas University police officers are assigned to; there are patrols held by both police officers and student patrol teams during late night hours, and they are responsible for reporting repairing or maintenance of lighting and other potential safety problems. Also, crime prevention specialists make recommendations and assessments about security systems designed for new campus facilities. After introduction to the campus facilities and systems help to prevent crimes, the article lists eight different programs that University employs to reduce the opportunities for crimes. For example, university police officers are all assigned for different focus areas; emergency phones offer a direct line to the university police department are located throughout campus, easy to identify and Safewalks are provided for students who have to walk alone at night. Despite for
According to the crime index, Peoria is considered to be safer than 7% of the cities in the US. In Illinois, more than 97% of the communities have a lower crime rate than Peoria. When compared to other communities with a similar population size, Peoria’s crime rate is higher than average ("Crime Rates for Peoria, IL"). Like most cities, Peoria is going to have records of violent offenses including things like rape, murder and non-negligent manslaughter, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. But different areas of Peoria are going to differ on their crime rate based on the class level that lives there and the security precautions taken in that area. Because a lot of students will be living off campus in houses or apartments, it is important for Bradley to understand the likelihood of a crime involving those students might face while not
The University of California, Riverside, is known for its high crime rate. We constantly get notices and emergency warnings about robberies and kidnappings. As students, we walk in fear at night. Whether we live on campus or near campus, the chances of being mugged or sexually assaulted is always a possibility. When a person is afraid, his or her movements are limited. Thus, the existence of a police department on campus can help expand those limitations as it provides protection.
Date rapes, hate crimes and theft have become an apparent concern on college campuses. The most disturbing crime on a college campus is a school shooting. Being a victim of any crime is the last thing any student or parent thinks of when choosing a college or university. The possibilities of danger on a college campus have been increasing over the years due to the reported crimes ranging from theft to murder. Because of the recent years of college campus reported shootings, both student and parent have become alarmingly concerned about
The main concern that may arise when dealing with intruders in the college is getting hold of personal information. This is a major concern for any school or college and is important that they are stopped. If intruders do enter the premises they could get hold of personal information about students and staff. In my poster I have highlighted this and given advice on how to stop this from occurring if someone unauthorized enters the building. Computes should be password locked when they are not being used and any confidential paper work should be put into cabinets which are locked. Staff should ensure that all members staff are aware of this rule and if any computers are not locked to do so. By having this
As a fellow Trojan living in the heart of a huge metropolitan city of Los Angeles, we are constantly bombarded by news of local crimes. Though sheltered in our little bubble of university life, we are still reminded of the dangers lurking in the shadows, perpetually threatening our sense of individual security. As a student, these fears most likely consist of physical safety such as being robbed, so an easy fix is just to not walk home alone and be more aware of the environment. If more support is needed, there are campus security,
Campus security at Louisiana State University of Alexandria is not as good as it should be. LSUA, like most college campuses, is a campus where almost anyone from anywhere can step foot on campus without having to go through any security checks. Someone can easily walk on campus grounds and possibly harm students or faculty. This is a very important issue that LSUA faces daily along with many other colleges and universities around the country. LSUA’s campus police has around 6-7 officers, which isn’t enough to cover most of the campus. Every now and then I see a university police officer patrol the campus streets trying
Next, we had security guards. I don’t really remember exactly how many we had, but they frequented problem areas of the school. The lunchroom was a major problem place, and the surrounding hallways where students would eat and do homework. There would also be security guards that walked around the “unfrequented” parts of the school. The security guards would also go outside and monitor the path, and the students crossing as well. Next, we had a desk at the front of the school with a security guard that doesn’t leave during the day. Vistors were required to sign in and report to the office. For awhile, we had a security guard that went around and looked around the parking lot, looking for suspicious things. Now, there is a van that drives around the parking lot keeping it secure as well. Next, we have to evaluate the potential risks and threats. At Grand Blanc, we didn’t have metal detectors, so being able to slip in with a knife, or something small, like this student did, would be a problem. Also, big bags such as purses, athletic bags and backpacks are problems as well because without metal detectors we do not know what are in the bags. Another potential risk is the unfrequented areas of the school. Even though there are cameras, there are enough cameras that you cant watch every one every time. With the unfrequented areas of the school, a student could create something destructive- it could be a considerable amount of time before someone passes by.
The website reads, “Safety on and around college campuses is a key concern for everyone. We know from visiting hundreds of college campuses and high schools each year and speaking to students and their parents that campus safety is of great concern to all of you. We’re here to help with timely information that we hope empowers and informs your college decisions.” Some of these services include where to find the universities crime log or incident reports. They also include where to find counseling services on campus for those who are depressed or struggling with metal
With the recent history of gun violence on college campuses, questions have been raised on how incidents like these can best be prevented. One proposed solution is allowing firearms to be carried on campuses. With many states passing the open carry law, the topic of guns on campus has become a major issue; however, there are many reasons to why allowing guns to be carried on campus would not help prevent situations like these. A college campus is a place where individuals of different maturity levels come to learn and develop. Research has shown that college students are not fully developed in regards to impulse and judgment, so allowing a student to be able to carry a gun would not be a logical choice. In addition, allowing guns on campus could lead to an increase in reckless shooting incidents, an increase in gun related crimes, and add to the difficulty to law enforcement personnel. A college campus needs to be a safe place for all. To ensure the safest environment for college students, guns should not be able to be carried on campus with the exception to law enforcement.
In an effort to be better prepared for a threat on campus, Roseville High School maintenance began installing Lock Bloks in the portables a week and half ago. These $10 devices allow doors
There is an influx of deadly shootings within the surrounding areas of the MTSU campus. The constant sound of police sirens is becoming the new norm. Although the university is the number one producer of graduates, according to the Tennessee Board of Regents, the increasing crime rate could be a deterrent for potential students. Over the past few weeks, there have been three nonrelated homicides at neighboring apartment complexes. Increased shootings in our neighborhood can be overcome with increased campus police presence and by restricting apartment access to students and faculty only.
If safety issues do occur, then the campus police department is there. There's also no valuable reason to carry a gun on campus. Students are not there to get into a gun fight. In addition, student Lauren Gaia brings up a good point about how it's not her job to protect herself during campus nights, it's the campus public safety department duty (Torres). The campus safety department is there, day and night to protect the lives of the college students.
I was in New York, just barely stumbling out of a six-hour overnight flight. It was my first sponsored professional handball trip for the Olympic Club, and I could only rely on myself for the following five days. However before I could compete with world class athletes, I had to embark on a journey to my hotel. To start my two-hour commute I had to take a bus to Jamaica, Queens so I trekked out into the freezing winter weather. As I patiently waited for the bus to come from the morning horizon, it arrived. Then as I stepped onto the bus I was slapped by its overworked heater and the bus driver’s thick Caribbean accent, I found out that dollar bills weren’t accepted.
Safety is a tremendous issue on college campuses, and additional procedures need to be taken to prevent crimes from happening. When walking onto a college campus as a young adult, people get a rush of the unknown. The unknown could be going to college parties and late night study groups. College should be like any high school or elementary school and have better security measures to protect their students. The reasons we need these extra steps are to prevent violence, give students a sense of security, and monitor visitors on campus.
Before exploring the process of constructing campus crime as a social issue, Sloan III and Fisher (2011) found it necessary to report on the history of campus crime in American universities as the majority of the public assumes that campus crime is a relatively new phenomenon when in fact, campus crimes has been a prominent (yet not very visible) issue since the founding of the
