How Shakespeare Changed Over Time

Shakespeare has changed the world of literature, even 400 years after his death.

Though the childhood of William Shakespeare was normal for his time, he did not let that stop himself from being extraordinary. Shakespeare was born April 23 in the busy town of Stratford-upon-Avon, 100 miles from London (“William Shakespeare”). Shakespeare was born into the home of Mary and John Shakespeare, a middle class family (Lipson). Though his father started out as a glove maker, he later reached higher status by becoming the mayor of Stratford (Lipson). His mother did not have to earn her social status, instead, she was born into a family that already had one. Though both his father and mother were successful, they were noted to be illiterate (Lipson). Shakespeare, on the other hand, was far from illiterate. His studies likely began at a local grammar school , though there are no records stating whether he finished his studies or not (Lipson). Only seven months after Shakespeare and Anne’s marriage, May 1583, their first child, Susanna was born (“william Shakespeare”). A little over two years later, February 1585, Shakespeare and Anne’s second and third child was born. The twins names were Hamnet and Judith (“William Shakespeare”). Following the twins birth, there are no records of Shakespeare for seven years. There are many theories about what he was doing during these years and why there are no records. In the end, no one truly knows what happened, leaving scholars to call this period in his life the “lost years”. Only 11 years after the twins were born, and four years after his “lost years”, Shakespeare and Anne’s only son Hamnet died of unknown causes (Chanel).
