Christopher Columbus A lot of people have celebrated Christopher Columbus, but when people started to know what he did in the past less people celebrated him. In the book: A young people’s history of the United States by: Howard Zinn says that Columbus did harmful thing to the native Americans. In the article of why Columbus should be celebrated by: The order of the sons in Italy says, that Columbus should be celebrated because of all his accomplishments when he founded the “first European settlement..” Columbus only cared for himself. Howard Zinn says, “He had to make good on his promise” and “to show a profit on his voyages.” Columbus used slaves to do his work and when they ran away, they were killed. The Order of the SOns of Italy thinks
First, Christopher Columbus made the Native Americans the slaves of the European people. In the text it states, “In the year 1495, they went on a great slave raid, rounded up fifteen hundred Arawak men, women, and children, put them in pens guarded by Spaniards and dogs” (Zinn 2). This goes to show that the Spaniards and Columbus rounded up slaves for their own good use and for pleasure. This also shows that he is cruel and really mean. This man was really bad. The text explains, “They would make fine servants…. With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want” (Zinn 1). Enslaving the Native Americans appears to be his intentions since day one. This shows that Columbus only wants the glory and every good thing to himself.
Christopher Columbus is not worthy of a holiday because he was very cruel to the Native Americans. In truth it’s very sad what he did. What Columbus did was what some call the American Holocaust. He forced the native peoples to be Christian, murdering and torturing them is they didn’t convert. Columbus pillaged and robbed- eating the food the natives worked hard to get. He forced them to mine, harvest, grow, and plant all of the food and gold. The diseases that were brought killed thousands, wiping out entire groups in a few months. The killing and torture made the relationship between natives and Englishmen worse. Clearly, Christopher Columbus isn’t worthy of a holiday.
Columbus was an italian explorer who took four voyages across the atlantic ocean. Columbus day should be celebrated because he brought attention to america, its history as one of the oldest holidays. He brought attention to america because of its legacy, discovery of america, and having no change in growth in the population for thousands of years. It also had a great history because of the reason it started, why it was honored, and because of how many years it's been celebrated.
America should still celebrate Columbus Day, even though he was in charge for killing thousands of innocent people he still did have the right idea and stuck with it to find new land and gold to make spain richer, himself too. He had to beg and beg for the king and queen to give him ships for along time, 1 year exactly, once he was granted it he put so much time, his whole life, to find what he didn't know was actually real or there. Even though Amerigo Vespucci found the actual land, Columbus was the one who had the right idea and gave Vespucci the idea to go searching for it. Without Columbus no one would have found it or even knew it was there. Some people think that it shouldn't be counted because he did get innocent people killed, many
We should not celebrate Columbus day. We should not celebrate columbus day because columbus did not find amaria first people were already living there. In the article, It states, while others may have reached America before him. If people got there before columbus then he did not discover america. Most people celebrate columbus day because he discovered america if he did not discover america why should he get a holiday. columbus just found land he did not even go in america he just found land that already had people on it. In the text it states, if Columbus knew the United States had a holiday honoring him -- even though he never actually set foot in any of the now superpower's 50 states. Why should we celebrate some one who did not even step
Columbus Day should not be abolished as a national holiday, because Columbus overcame obstacles to arrive in America (Document E). To begin with, Columbus sailed over an unknown sea, without knowing what was on the other side. If it wasn’t for Columbus’ bravery, America would still be unknown to most of us. Second, he made a great proficiency in geography, astronomy, and drawing, as they were necessary to his favorite pursuit of navigation (Document B). Finally, Columbus was the greatest, because he accomplished the most against the highest odds (Document E). In conclusion Columbus overcame obstacles to find America, so we have to show Columbus some appreciation.
Columbus's arrogance and exploitation regarding slavery began on his second voyage. Ferdinand and Isabella had ordered that the natives be treated kindly. In opposition to this order, Columbus began exporting slaves in great numbers in 1494. It was because he was not making any real profit elsewhere on the island that he decided to exploit the one source of income--people--he had in abundance (Fernandez-Armesto 107). When word reached him that the crown did not want him sending more slaves, Columbus ignored it. He was desperate to make his expeditions profitable enough for Ferdinand and Isabella's continued support. Evidently he was not reprimanded because thousands of Indians were exported. By the time they reached Spain, usually a third of them were dead. Bartolome de las Casas wrote that one Spaniard had told him they did not need a compass to find their way back to Spain; they could simply follow the bodies of floating Indians who had been tossed overboard when they died (17). It is horrible to consider that the exportation of these natives resulted
We talk about him in school, it's taught that he's a great explorer who found our great nation. What they don't teach us is that he is a murderer. He murdered thousands of natives from the islands he first sailed to. Many wouldn't be able to guess the name of this explorer by the description, but in fact, his name is Christopher Columbus. Columbus didn't care about the lives of the indigenous people on many of the islands, he only cared about having control of the land. When we celebrate Columbus day in school and as a country we are honoring a man who did nothing good for the country but actually discouraged diversity and someone who resorted to violence rather than possible treaties or alliances. We need to discourage Columbus day, and rather,
Columbus didn’t discover anything new, making a reason why we shouldn’t celebrate Columbus Day. Christopher Columbus didn’t discover America. He could have discover a place where people had already live there for years. Columbus contributed nothing to European knowledge. Columbus having no actual discovery meant that there wasn’t anything new to learn. Columbus also didn’t convert any natives to Christianity. “The Indians of the Caribbean were destroyed within two generations by the spanish discovers” (Source 1). Columbus Day shouldn’t be celebrated since Christopher Columbus himself was a cruel man.
The national holiday, Columbus Day, is a day honoring Christopher Columbus. I believe that Columbus isn’t worthy of this holiday because of how he treated the Native Americans. When he found the Americas and met the Native Americans, he murdered, enslaved, tortured, robbed, kidnapped, and forced the native people out of there homes. Columbus wanted all of the and its resources for Europe and didn’t care what he had to do to get it. While doing this, Columbus brought over foreign diseases such as smallpox, yellow fever, and the flu. This killed off a lot of the native popultion. Columbus also forced the native people to become Christian, instead of what they believed in. If you think about it, Christopher Columbus doesn’t deserve a holiday.
I don't think that we should celebrate Columbus Day. We have been taught since we were young that he is a hero and had done many great things. He is not what he is made out to be.
The spirit and values of a nation are reflected in the nation’s heroes. Christopher Columbus has been regarded as an American hero since 1792. Every year Columbus Day is held on the second Monday in October to honor the man and his legacy. However, many people debate whether or not Columbus Day should be celebrated. I believe that Columbus Day should be celebrated in the United States because he opened up the New World to Europe, inspired a spirit of exploration and adventure that still lasts today, and he showed the importance of diversity and understanding of different cultures.
Christopher Columbus abused and slaughtered the Natives and their very own children. In the Article, Smithsonianmag, it states,”Or, as Mr. Bergreen puts it in describing the aftermath of an Indian slaughter of Columbus' men at La Navidad on what is now the island of Haiti: "A leader who valued gold above the security of his men could be counted on to aspire to great accomplishments at great cost." It states that Columbus slaughtered Indian men and forced his own men to kill them. He will do anything for gold. As far as killing innocent people. In the same article it also states,”Forced hard labor,The amputation of limbs if slaves were not producing ‘enough’,Labelled as hostile savages if not in complete compliance with their oppressors,Buried alive or burnt alive if you were resistant to the conquerors demands, were resistant to the conquerors demands,Offering cash rewards for
Columbus never even walked on what we now call the United States of America. Where ever he did land, he was motivated only by his own greed. Columbus came for the gold, spices, and slaves. In his diary, he mentioned gold 75 times just in the first two weeks, alone (Katz 13). Indians who weren’t able to find gold, were punished by having their hands cut off. Most slaves died en route to Spain. Many Indian females were taken as sex slaves, some as young as nine and ten years old. Columbus forced cooperation from the Indians by disfiguring them and using them as examples. Even worse, he used hunting dogs to tear the Indians apart. Many natives committed suicide, and murdered their own children to save them from such a horrible life. Those who survived the voyage were worked to death. Still, another huge portion of these Indians died from disease brought over by Columbus and his
Christopher Columbus is a very important person in our country's history. He found the "New World," the one we live in today. He started the society that makes us who we are today, the society that allowed our ancestors to come to America and start the life that we live now. This whole world owes their lives to him. Columbus should always be remembered as a very important and very good person in history.
