eaWorld is a world renowned marine attraction park but many people do not know about the animal cruelty that goes on there. Animals should not be kept in such small captive tanks when they’re are used to swimming for 100’s of miles a day. The whales are becoming aggressive as a result of treatment they receive at SeaWorld. No animal should be taken from their own mothers at such a young age and be put in these small tanks compared to the ocean that they are used to and have to live there for the rest of their lives and perform tricks in front of thousands of people. SeaWorld keeps their whales and other animals captive in poor conditions and should be shut down.
SeaWorld doesn’t have the whales best interest at heart and doesn’t deserve to continue to operate. These whales are psychologically disturbed and SeaWorld knows how they are treating them is completely wrong. During one of the tours they said “ Whales live up to 25 years in the wild but they tend to live longer in our park”(Cowperthwaite). This is scientifically wrong Orca’s live the normal life span of a human being, sometimes even longer. If SeaWorld is making millions of dollars off of these animals you would think they would at least tell the public the correct information. One of the former trainers has said “Young orcas have so much energy and curiosity—I could

The good thing is that many people are protesting SeaWorld and they are slowly declining their sales. The only thing that SeaWorld can do that would be the right thing is to let the Orcas back into the wild where they belong. If the animals were put back into the wild it would not only let the whales finally be free but they would put the trainers out of danger from being in the small tanks with the massive whales. Hopefully within the next 10 years these magnificent animals can be put back where they
The research shows that killer whales are not healthy in captivity. But we can stop this and seaworld has taken some steps to help solve the problem that orcas aren’t healthy in captivity. This problem affects the orcas big time, and the trainers that take care of them. Killer whales in the wild are having a great time, but remember in some countries there are no laws stopping them from catching or killing orcas. Maybe we should call them killer humans, instead of calling orcas killer whales because they’re really the problem. Research highly suggest that they expand their tanks or just plain out stop pulling killer whales out of the ocean. Some laws have been passed in the US to stop people from killing orcas or pulling them out of the ocean.
Since its establishment in 1964 the world famous franchise SeaWorld has been subjected to various tabloid headlines and legal investigations following the horrendous attacks by orcas, also known by their more apt name ‘Killer Whales’. These incident range from minor to major, but, there has been rare cases of fatalities from the family orientated marine parks based in America.
Since SeaWorld opened in 1964, the park has encountered harsh criticism from the public. Whether criticized for their ethics or their oblivious harm to animals, the underwater amusement park raises many ethical questions regarding the captivity of sea animals, especially orcas. Most people are uninformed about orcas to begin with, so they do not understand why SeaWorld is such a terrible place. SeaWorld exploits animals in their shows to bring revenue to their company, while disregarding the physical and mental health of the animals. Today, people have begun to see the reasons why SeaWorld should close. SeaWorld should close their doors due to their record of unhealthy orcas, their aggressive killer whale, Tilikum, and their dishonesty to the public.
California coastal commision meeting in long beach. the commision considered a $100 million expansion of the tanks in which orcas will be held. these captive orcas are held, starved, and torn from their families, put into concrete tank and explioted for human entertainment. now that activists brought light into this issue, seaworld sales have declined. seawolds solution? to buld a latger more humn concrete tank. while many seaworld advocates, employees and pass holders spoke for it we stood our ground. orcas should thruve in their natural habitat, not in a concrete tank. seaworld bribed their season pass holders for attending. new expansion will triple the size under one condition which is to stop breeding them unnaturally.
Another reason why orcas shouldn’t be in places like SeaWorld is because the habitat is bad and small for them. One example is that often the orcas get bored when they are in captivity and start to chip of the paint on the side of their enclosure’s walls. This then ruins their teeth, which then means regular dental check-ups. (B) In a way, orcas are similar to humans because they get bored. When whales are in the wild they can swim freely and for as long as they want. This shows that they aren’t as active as in the wild. For example, often there are dominant females and sometimes those dominant females can get violent. They get so violent that they start to hurt other whales. According to article Killer Whales Should Not Be Kept in Captivity,”
What has attracted millions of families and spectators over the years, SeaWorld has recently brought reproach and disgrace. A few years ago, SeaWorld’s unacceptable treatment of their whales and sea animals was revealed and has greatly impaired their visitor attendance. This was exposed in the article, “Has America’s disgust at SeaWorld already peaked?” written by Jordan Weissmann. This particular article caught my attention because personally, I have made many visits to SeaWorld and to hear that the beautiful whales that I have witnessed were treated poorly, upset me deeply. I would have never guessed that such a well known park known for its incredible sea life would ever dare to harm their animals. And as mentioned before, because of this
Since 1961, 157 orcas, or killer whales, have been ripped from their homes and shoved into captivity. 127 of these orcas are now dead. With the number of captured orcas plus the number of those born into captivity, The W.D.C. (Whale and Dolphin Conservation) reports that, “At least 162 orcas have died in captivity, not including 30 miscarried or stillborn calves” ( “The Fate”1). Out of the 127 taken into captivity, 44 have died in SeaWorld. There are currently 58 orcas residing in 14 marine parks in eight different countries. 24 of those orcas are held in SeaWorld’s three parks in the United States. Since 2002, 14 have been taken out of the wild and put into these marine parks. (“The Fate”1) It is not fair for these innocent creatures to be physically and mentally manipulated and damaged. Such brutality would not be condoned if it were targeted towards a human, and it should not be condoned when targeted toward an animal. Orca whales should not be held in captivity because they are forced to live in subpar conditions, they are mistreated while in captivity, and they are led to aggressive behavior.
Captivity has been a controversial subject for as long as it has existed. In the past decade, SeaWorld has been under scrutiny for their killer whale program and the number of incidents regarding them. Almost as big as a school bus, these animals are incredibly intelligent. Their brain’s are so much larger than humans. One may think that is because they are so massive, but body size does not determine brain size. Many animals much larger than humans have brains much smaller. Killer whales even have a center of their brain that processes emotions; humans do not have that. SeaWorld has taken social animals who swim almost 100 miles a day, to an introverted, almost immobile bathtub, baking in the sun. Nothing good can come from changing their
As a young child there has been so many commercials about how SeaWorld is such an amazing place for marine life animals, yet what we do not know is that most of these animals have been held in captivity against their will. Just think about it, these animals’ are made to perform day in and day out for a huge crowd, yet we do not stop and think about what it would be like if we ourselves were held in captivity. Although awareness needs to be brought to this issue, it can make this situation a touchy subject. However, awareness does need to be brought to attention of people who support these amusement parks. The life of orca whales held in captivity are dangerous and have suffered a great amount of distress.
I agree that SeaWorld is not a friendly place for killer whales. I think that if SeaWorld is going to continue to keep the animals captive then they need a better environment to live in. To give them a better environment the need a bigger tank and to be with their family. You can’t expect a huge orca to live in a cement pool their whole lives. They should be out in the wild with their families where they belong.
Most people today have visited or at least heard of the popular tourist attraction, Seaworld. These tourists may think of it as a place to see marine animals do trick, like killer whales interacting with humans in a fun and entertaining way- but do we ever stop to think about the treatment or feelings of these creatures? After visiting Seaworld and seeing the famous Shamu, the thought of how living in captivity affects the animal had not crossed my mind. After researching I am now extremely concerned with the way these whales are impacted by spending their lives in bathtubs and forced to do tricks for food, all while humans are blindly funding this billion dollar business.
How would you feel to be taken away from your family? Since 1961, orcas from all around the world have been taken away from their family groups and moved from park to park (WDC). “One faction views SeaWorld as a Garden Hilton for killer whales, and the other views it as a Hanoi Hilton for killer whales.” - David Kirby. Out of the 150 orcas taken from the wild, 127 of them are now dead (WDC). As of December 2015, there are a total of 57 orcas being held in captivity. 23 of those orcas were taken from the wild and 33 were born in captivity. Do you think that those wild orcas would take happily to living life in a water park? SeaWorld enjoys to cover up what actually goes on with their whales. For instance, at least 45 orcas have died in SeaWorld. They say that they provide a functioning family unit for the whales, but during one of the Shamu shows in 1989, a female orca rammed into another trying to assert its dominance. This collision caused internal bleeding to the less dominant whale. The whale ended up bleeding to death in her pen with her calf swimming helplessly by her side. The public never heard of this side to SeaWorld, until very recently. The public sees orcas as big, performing, gentle, giants. The truth about SeaWorld is slowly revealing
Despite SeaWorld standing behind their kind treatment towards their orcas, animal rights activists believe that statement to be false. In 1970, more than 90 orcas were stalked and herded into a three-acre net by
If you have ever been to Seaworld you would have had to go see the Killer whales in fact its one of the top attractions there. Through the eyes of a child, these gentle giants seem to be happy, healthy, and enjoying a playful game with their trainers. The question is are they really happy, do they get treated the right way, and why have there been deaths and injuries. Many people wonder about these things and after the movie Blackfish came out more and more people began to question how well Seaworld treats their animals. “The truth is that Sea World keeps its animals for entertainment and money and helps no one but themselves.”- Animal Legal Defense Fund
Anyone who has been to SeaWorld has seen trained whales, dolphins, and seals. SeaWorld guests are entertained by the sea mammals in the tanks, jumping in the air on command by whistle. These tricks draw guests into the park. What may seem to be fun for the viewer, is torture for the mammals. There is a deadly truth behind all sea mammals in captivity: they don’t survive well there. Though sea mammals provide entertainment, they do not belong in captivity. Imagine being at home and then somebody broke in and you were forced, without any choice, to join the circus. This is what the mammals have to go through every day. It is not fair for the mammals to go through this. Why should anyone want them to? Now imagine being a six foot man living
