Parents have the right to choose the path for their child education. They should take the time to consider the long-term effect it could have on their child. Home schooled children could be missing out on valuable lessons in life and the opportunity to participate in school activities and sporting events. Socialization plays an important part of a child’s growth and understanding of the real world. Children must learn to respect people in authority outside of the home setting. Just anyone can not teach education; there should be some guidelines for homeschool just as there are for public schools. There are many memories made from public or private school settings. As one smart person once stated, “If there were no schools to take the children away from home part of the time, the insane asylums would be filled with mothers.” (Howe). Children and parents need separation periods to develop and understand different people 's perceptive.
Socialization is an important development tool. Every interaction your child has helped him learn language skills, ways to cope with emotions and how to work within social norms. Once your child is in school, teachers and peers start to be a major part of socialization, which impacts development by helping your child feel competent. During early school years, a teacher provides structure and discipline in a child’s day. Homeschool children may not have a structured schedule due to what may be going on at home. Maybe due to a sibling or
“You take each student from where they are and provided experiences that will maximize success” (Qualities of a good Teacher). On the other hand, there are no requirements stating that parents doing home schooling have to be trained, experienced, certified or evaluated; or have any particular qualifications, parents who have graduated high school can home school their child. Home schooled parents argue that they can invest more time and energy into their child’s education, but in reality, a parent can educate their children at home with just a high school degree. Their inexperience harms the child more than their attempt to help. As well as educated teachers, public schools also provide a development of adapting to a more diverse environment and instill a stimulation to learn.
Homeschooling a child can drastically affect their lives in the future, and put them in a clouded state of mind for seeing what the world is. Schooling your child from home will hold them back from learning a wide variety of basic skills that can be easily provided in public or private school systems. Although some see homeschooling as a good way to shelter their children from the world they view as harsh, it is not giving them any chance to gain common social skills. Social skills cannot be taught to a child, they are something the child must learn from interaction with his or her peers. Furthermore, homeschool teachers are not required the level of training and experience that a teacher at a public school are required (Hudak). Diversity is something widely portrayed in school systems; however, homeschooling doesn't allow students to bear witness to the diverse nature found in school systems.
In the other hand parents who choose to home school their kids are faced with a great deal of advantages. Home schooling a child means that a parent has to give 100 percent dedication into teaching there child. One great asset to home schooling is that children are often way ahead in their grade work as compared with their peers in public school. They learn to read much earlier and advance through their subjects much faster and in a more thorough manner, due to more individualized attention and subject-specific attention. By being taught at home, the student has immediate access to the "teacher", and can ask questions at just about any time without having to worry about other students and their learning habits. Parents don’t have to worry about the safety of their child when it comes to home schooling. The child is in the home and always being watched if something where to happen it would be the parents’ responsibility and the parent would know what to do
For years flocks of children have gotten up at the crack of dawn and gone to the brick building to sit at their desks for eight hours straight, but now a very effective style of school called homeschooling has emerged. Most of todays parents have gone to a public school because homeschooling was not very well known back when they were school aged. Since then, homeschooling has become much more popular and has been proven to be effective. Parents should consider homeschooling their kids as an alternative to sending them to a public school.
Not attending school deprives students of the opportunity to develop these skills. Not going to school drastically limits their social interaction. They do not learn the social cues that others acquire as they walk the hallways in conventional schools or as they sit in classrooms with other students and instructors. One of the big focuses in schools right now has to do with cooperative learning because later in life the majority of people, at some point, will have to work with others. This skill can be hard to master for many people because of the differences in each individual. Students in schools are often forced to work with those they may normally have little interaction with on a daily basis. This is a great lesson in tolerance and teamwork. With limited interaction, homeschooled students have to learn this lesson later in life or never at
The homeschooling movement has been growing gradually over the past few years. According to About Education, homeschooling is a type of education where children learn outside of a school setting under the supervision of their parents. The family is able to decide what their children learn and how it is to be taught, while corresponding to government regulations that may apply in their state or country. Today, homeschooling is a broadly acknowledge educational alternative to traditional public or private schools, yet some people are not aware of what homeschools are like or the effects it may have on students. In his article, “Revisiting the Common Myths about Homeschooling,” Michael Romanowski, a professor of education in the Middle East, writes about four common myths about homeschooling and explains why the they are not true. On the contrary, Randall Curren and J.C. Blokhuis, the authors of “The Prima Facie Case Against Homeschooling,” believe common schools do a better job than parents of preparing children for public life. They are not specifically asserting that common schools are better than homeschooling, but a common school with professional trained teachers seems better than parents educating their own children. Ultimately, Romanowski’s concrete approach to his article by invalidating the myths proves to be more influential than Curren and Blokhuis.
Before presenting both the positive and the negative aspects of homeschooling it is worth mentioning that the deciding factor for parents choosing to homeschool as opposed to public schooling generally falls into a biased opinion of public schooling. As mentioned in an NPR radio interview, “the number one reason parents give is the desire to provide religious or moral instruction and that the second most popular reason, closely followed behind, was a concern about the school environment” Martin, M. (2013). These type of reasoning for home schooling presents some valid question, such as, who determines what the best approach or the best form of education? Is the quality of education
Unlike many students, my first year of schooling was undertaken at home, rather than amongst my peers. My subsequent years of schooling were spent in a normal classroom environment; however, I often felt that this year at home, which was characterized by much less interaction with peers than I would have had if I was enrolled in traditional schooling, had left me at a social disadvantage, or slightly behind other children in terms of my level of socialization. I was much shyer than the other children who had already developed groups, friendships, who were much more adept at interacting amongst each other, and generally seemed more outgoing than myself. I often felt like an outsider, with feelings of self-consciousness and a lack of
Many, Parents have an opinion of what’s taught in their child’s classroom. Some parents want total control over what their child is exposed to. According to Michael’s Haverluck CBN news article Socialization: Homeschooling vs. Schools, he states “Parents feel that they can provide a better education at home, religious reasons, there is a poor learning environment at home, family reasons, and they feel that their children will develop character and morality.” (Haverluck). Parents have the chance to teach their children the values that they want. Children have the opportunity to choose when and where they want to study. The child does not have to be limited to a specific time schedule like public schools being six hours a day. The child can make his/her own
Nowadays homeschooling is an activity that have become more popular in United States. In homeschooling parents teach many subjects at home, instead of taking their children to the traditional classrooms with more children. In my point of view I have two reasons to be against homeschool children; these two reasons are the next:
However, if on one hand homeschooling can provide the student with freedom on different levels, on the other hand learning at home can drastically reduce parents’ freedom and can consume a lot of their time causing stress and frustration in most cases.
Despite home-schooling’s controversy because of the lack of teaching credentials for parents and socialization, homeschooling has big benefits for children. The first benefit is that while homeschooled, students receive individualized education. Parents spend all their time and attention to their children. Parents can devote all their time and attention to their children. Martin points out that parents understand their children best (Martin). Therefore, they can choose the best method to motivate their children to learn. “Parents are also able to evaluate their children on a daily basis and provide further instruction if needed” (Martin). Individualized education also provide necessary help as needed. As a result, homeschooled students achieve
The greatly discussed dilemma of having a child be taught in a public school setting versus a homeschool setting has been evaluated by parents since the idea was first introduced in the 1970’s. Public schooling had been the standard method of teaching since it is a requirement for states to provide public, free education for children in grades K-12. However, the backlash against the system began when two educational theorists and supporters of school reform, John Holt and Raymond Moore, started to question both the techniques and the products of public schools. Some parents went on to support the ideas of them and began to teach their children in the environment of their own homes for several different reasons. Some included moral or religious reasons, a desire for high educational achievement, dissatisfaction with public schools’ instructional program, or concerns about drugs and peer pressure in a public school environment. Child development specialists believe that homeschooled children are isolated from the outside world, therefore making them socially handicapped. If being exposed to this type of education on an elementary school level, the child can suffer from the lack of fundamental development of effective social skills needed for a lifetime ahead of them.
Most parents hear the word “home-school” and conjure up many assumptions that are either false or overlooked at. The technology provided, as well as the teaching quality spent on home-schooled children requires a lot of time and effort from the parents; it is an act of dedication and total commitment. According to the Robinson Curriculum, the parents have “little personal time or time alone. If care is not taken to set aside time for yourself, it is easy to never have time alone. They are basically with their [children] 24/7” (The Robinson Curriculum). There are many positives as well as the negatives outlooks pertaining to “sheltering” kids from attending private or public schools. Many adults are
Body Paragraph Many educators feel that homeschooled children don’t interacted with children their age. In fact, many homeschool parents connect with other homeschool parents to establish homeschooling communities where one parent teaches multiple families on one day and another parent teaches on another day. However, the most common argument against homeschooling has been that homeschool students will be socially delayed due to the failure to socialize with other students.
