Technology has become an integral part of our lives, and it has brought forth one of the greatest marvels of mankind, the Internet. A global network connecting millions of computers and people in more than 190 countries worldwide, known by almost everyone in most of the western countries and increasingly everywhere else. It is beginning to become the medium of the future and is rapidly reaching the mass market. Over the past decade, as the educational, technological, leisure and corporal markets have continued to expand, the Internet has slowly become meaningfully embedded in the routines of daily life across the world. Children today, also seen as “the digital generation”, are supposed to represent the future on the World Wide Web’s technological escapades. But at the same time, this generation also seems vulnerable from the Internet on the path of furthering their growth in areas of information, communication, entertainment, comfort and newer economic methods – a twisted, double-edged sword, one might say. The speculative propaganda about if the Internet is right or wrong for children requires a new stance. So what is the right answer? We must dig deep on insights from both sides of the argument and define the correct path. The Internet has opened up a colossal door of opportunities, but these opportunities come with a significant risk.
In the recent years, there have been several investigations on how advantageous the internet can be to children between the ages of 4-12, in the classroom. In 1991, Cheryl Lemke, CEO of the Metiri Group – a research branch of Cisco – published a study book to shape the public’s thinking towards using more advanced technology in the classroom, like the Internet. In this book, called Technology in Schools, Lemke summaries the following reasons to use the Internet:

Its original use was meant solely for the service of humans, however overtime it has evolved into something much different. What was originally meant to be an assisting piece of machinery has changed almost every aspect of our culture. Schools are even more intertwined with this fabulous technology, there’s a computer in every classroom. Students are now free to access a virtual infinity of data whenever they need a report on John Adams, or can use the library computers to requisition a book on the Panama Canal. Even teachers use the internet for research, pulling crucial info from reliable research websites and online news centers. As a research companion, the internet is essential, a powerful, never ending library of useful information and resource.

Since technology has been developed, people’s lives have also been changed. Shopping has become more convenient. I also often use technology to buy products, especially flight tickets. Since I came to the United States, whenever I go traveling or go back to Japan during breaks, I used an online travel agency, Expedia, to purchase my flight tickets. This is because it is very convenient. I can search and reserve my flight quickly. Usually, I do not have any problem with Expedia, but I had trouble with it because of technology during this spring break. I think that if humans operated the service, the problem did not happen.

My typical morning begins with turning off the alarm on my cell phone and immediately checking my notifications— texts, emails, status updates, instant messages, etc. Then it’s time for me to actually get up and get ready for the day— wash up, eat, and leave for whatever is needed to be done for the day. I walk to the elevator, wait, and check Twitter. As I walk to school, I go onto Snapchat and snap a photo of my campus with the locations filter tag, sending it to everyone I know. Whatever time I have to spare, I tend to check any social media app for updates. Looking at my surroundings, it is not just me. I see the general public constantly checking their smartphones or tablets when they have the time to. What technology has done for my generation has us hooked onto the internet. Sure having all these advancements in technology is beneficial and adds a bit of fun to our lives, but it is preventing us from really connecting with the world.
