Far reaching changes have occurred throughout the world within the last forty years that has made this society in which children are growing up today much different from that for which their parents and grandparents prepared. Information and communication technologies are a central part of these changes. Childhood it seems is increasingly saturated by technology. Entertainment technology that includes Internet, iPads, TV, video games and cell phones has progressed so swiftly, that families have barely perceived the substantial effect and variations that their family organization and lifestyles have had. If for instance we take the case of the widely used internet, we find that accessibility of personal computers has resulted in introduction of the Internet and the World Wide Web into homes and schools. Consequently, in just a few short years the Internet has redefined the media habits of children. These has had significant impact on children where the internet has become the most convenient source of information and surprisingly the easiest albeit cheapest way to human contact thousands of kilometers in distance difference. Not surprising however, children have enthusiastically embraced such ubiquitous information technology, and this may be the reason why the newer generations are growing up with a sense of ease toward evolving computer-based, communication, and game-oriented technologies. Nonetheless, countless claims are cropping up that because children are still developing cognitively and socially they should not be exposed to technology on the basis that it will be detrimental both at the time and later on in their life. However, the adverse research put into this has shown that children’s experiences and alternatively attachment with technology in different families differs greatly. As far back as I can remember I have had a happy childhood. I didn’t grow up depending on technology to teach me the alphabet or learning to draw pictures on an iPad. Instead I played outside for hours in my tree house inventing new ways to climb the tree in my backyard, and learning to color inside the lines of my coloring book that I bought with the quarters I earned with my lemonade stand at the end of my drive way. This technology revolution sparked a debate on children’s use of technology. Children are constantly using iPads, iPhones, tablets, and other computerized devices. By over exposing children to technology, they are being robbed of the mental stimulation that comes from doing real, non computerized, activities. It has gotten to the point where one can see a two-year-old navigate an iPhone with ease but struggle to speak. My research project was inspired by my love of children and the many times I have observed children using technology. From this experience I noticed many young children are extremely familiar with technology and the use of technology can have both positive and negative effects on them. As I have researched into this topic, I have learnt there are many beneficial and harmful implications of technological use for children. A finding I have come across on multiple occasions is children should not be using or be in contact with any technology whilst they are under the age of 2. A positive implication includes using technology for educational reasons as opposed to entertainment purposes. Using technology for entertainment or for long periods of time can negatively affect the child psychologically. If you were to take a stroll down any populated street in America, you would see the use of technology. So how has this impacted the children of this generation? In order to contrast this, I have interviewed two members of my community. Ron Moore (58) and Brayden Johnson (11), have lived very different childhoods, despite being raised in the same community, Ron spent most of his youth doing outdoors activities, learning to work, and was raised in a more family oriented manner.

Today’s technology has greatly impacted the young children’s everyday lives. Phones, tablets, and computers are all a form of technology that impact the way kids are influenced. Some children get phones or computers at young ages and it can cause kids to depend on it to entertain them. Eventually they will allow the technology to take over and have it become the form of communication between friend and family instead of face to face. As parents continue to buy their children new technology they don’t monitor the amount of time their children spend on the Internet. Technology is becoming more advanced overtime which causes children to become more attached and unable to function without it near by.
With technology constantly improving and playing a greater role for each day that passes, how are we supposed to raise our children? Should we let them be exposed for it or should we strictly con-trol how much technology they should be allowed to use? That is the question issued in an article by Larry Rosen. In an article on The Huffington Post website in 2013, Larry Rosen puts focus on a dilemma that has emerged as technology has improved and become a part of our everyday life: is there a limit regard-ing how much children should use iPads or television?

By this statement, it is implied that children today are much closer to technology and media than adults are, and so, are more likely to be affected by it. Perhaps, the highest impact on the physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development of children and adolescents is by media due to its ready availability through Smart phones, tablet PCs and other portable devices. It is widely believed by many that the ever-increasing proliferation of technology within entertainment has had detrimental effects on those children exposed to them, with many youngsters forgoing the more traditional pursuits in favour of digital interaction with online acquaintances or artificial intelligence. Entertainment now contains a wide variety of technologies including television (standard or interactive), music, computers, games consoles, toys and the internet, to name but a few. The aim of this study is to identify whether these technologies have an impact on the behaviour of children in either a negative or positive aspect.
The advances of technology in the past fifty years have endangered the future of active childhoods. While these advances have shown as a great benefit to the worlds of business, education and medicine, the impact on family life and communication has put the health and development of our children at risk. Reduced nutritional guidance, outdoor activity and organized family time has been the result of electronic “make-your-life-easier” gadgets while the time “saved” is now spent consuming additional hours of television or internet browsing.
