Essay for The Picture of Dorian Gray The character Dorian in the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray had multiple conflicting directions by two compelling influences. Dorian’s desires in life are manipulated by Lord Henry’s malignant theories. Since they first met, Dorian realizes what Lord Henry’s intentions are and attempts to avoid his advice. However, throughout the novel, he struggles with making his own decisions and defining his own character, ultimately being led astray. While there are others, such as Basil, who attempt to liberate his mind from maladies, these attempts are fruitless and the power of influences drives Dorian towards the path of sin. One of the major influences that can be displayed throughout the novel is Lord Henry.
