During the period of 1861 to 1865 there was a war that changed the whole entire history of United States. This war was called “The Civil War”. The Civil War was a war between the Northern and the Southern states. The northern states formed together and were called the Union and the Sothern states were called the Confederate. The Confederate wanted to stay separate from the Union and keep control of their slaves. The Confederates believed slaves where needed because of large amount of agriculture and vast array of land in the south. In the north it is cold most of the year so the agriculture is not a plentiful as it was it the southern states where the weather is great. During this challenging time in America, Abraham Lincoln was the President
As Abraham Lincoln succeed in winning the elections it became a conflict. In Document 11 from the Civil War DBQ it says that Abraham Lincoln was republican who was against the expansion of slavery. Lincoln winning the election without a single vote from the Southern side it lead to the civil war. The South fear that he was going abolish slavery in the Southern side. The South secede from the Union, but Abraham wanted the Nation to be together and he was going to do whatever it takes to have all states together in the Union. Since he wanted to stop slavery the South refuse and fought against the
With Fort Sumter being the first battle from the confederacy against abolitionist and ending it with that Manassa battle the union's defeat showed Lincoln the war would be long. The northerners being more industrialized than the south they were able to defeat the confederacy. Free black slaves in the north helped fight the Civil War to gain equality and freedom to all men. The war was about a new birth of freedom. In slave plantations, they were hoiused in shacks spreading diseases, less than four out of one hundred survived till sixty. The southerners knowing the north was far more better economically, still didn't think of changing their way of lifestyle over slavery. A white man being killed over slavery, sparked protest and meeting all over the north, discovering slavery would become a issue in war. When Lincoln was president he wanted the declaration of independence to express that all men can go as far as talent can take them. South feared the North would abolish slavery and North felt the South would expand slavery
In the year of 1864, President Lincoln was re-elected but had some struggles along the way. The Civil War dramatically affected the Union as it was split among the decision of slavery. Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation (1862), which transformed the wars purpose from the preservation of our nation into a battle for the abolition of slavery. Many Northerners did not like the idea of banishing slavery because the initial concept of the war was whether or not the president would be able to defeat the Confederacy of the South. The Northerners did not care about defending human rights. Lincoln’s progress with the war in his previous term helped him gain back power as president.
Abraham Lincoln started all that before he was in office, so imagine what he did when he became president of the United States. When Lincoln was elected there was a long series of policy clashes between the South and the North. The clash wasn’t just about slavery. It was a clash of elites. The Northern elite wanted economic expansion. Such as, free land; free labor, free market, and much more. Lincoln had all of this in mind, even the slaves. The slaves saw Lincoln as their ticket to freedom. The South was for slavery, so when they notice Lincoln was trying to abolish slavery they started to secede from the union. Lincoln tried to get some of the states back and more seceded. The confederacy was formed; the civil war was on.
The civil war During the civil war, northern states and southern states were fighting to gain control over one another. The Northern states were fighting to abolish slavery, and the Southern states on the other hand, were fighting to keep slavery. Abraham Lincoln was the president during this moment in time, and he played a huge part in the outcome in the war.
To begin with, immediately after the election and inauguration of Abraham Lincoln, the newly-established Republican Party’s presidential nominee, eleven states of the South seceded from the Union. These events marked the beginning of the Civil War and the war was a result of many political tensions that had emerged between the North and the South in the prior decades, all of which were associated with the institution of slavery installed in the Southern United States. President Lincoln began the Civil War with the South in response to states’ secession from the Union, and therefore, the war was not solely concentrated over the issue of slavery in American society. The North fought to preserve the Union while the Confederacy fought to
Prior to Civil War, distinct Northern and Southern cultures had been established; The free North occupied the commercial industry, while the slavery-based South undertook an agricultural occupation. The South and the North began to fight over right and wrong. The major issue was regarding slavery, as the South wanted to preserve slavery while, the North wanted to get rid of it. These conflicts rose into sectional antagonism and eventually put the United States and President Lincoln in a loophole. During the Civil War however, Lincoln made some extremely controversial decisions, that resulted in a reduction of the sectional antagonism present, and the United States became truly “one nation.”
The Civil War is one of the “central event” in the history of America which lead to many consciousness. In 1776-1783 the revolution took place which created United States, and from 1861-1865 the civil war took place which determined what kind of nation it would be. This civil war resolved two fundamental unresolved question left by the revolution: Either the united states was to be dissolvable confederation of sovereign state or an indivisible nation with a sovereign nation government, also if the nation was to create a declaration for equal rights to liberty, or continue to make its existence as the largest slave holding country in the world. The War started reason being uncompromising differences within the slave state and Free State over
The Civil War was a war that was fought over the civil and humane treatment of every person, regardless of their outward appearances. It left a scathing scar on the nation After the atrocities that were suffered in the Civil war, the nation need a way to heal it’s wounds and unite again. Lincoln had a battle of his own to fight within the congress for the Reconstruction of the nation, While Lincoln believed that the south had suffered enough and had a long road to recovery, the radical republicans wanted to punish the south. They believed that the act of secession by the southern states was treason and the penalties should be strict.
The Civil War was a time of fighting within the United States brought on by many events including the Missouri Compromise, abolition movement, presidential election of 1860, secession of Southern states, and other occurrences. Most Southern states seceded from the Union, forming the Confederate States of America. The big divide stemmed from the differing positions on slavery. The North had been gradually abolishing slavery and did not depend on such free labor in the way the South did. The agricultural dependant economy of the South relied on African American labor. Therefore, each side feared the stance the government would take on the issue of slavery and how that would affect the economy and politics of the nation. From 1861 to 1865, the
The Civil War is something almost everyone has a general idea about. It is more than a huge part of America’s history and is the central event in America 's historical consciousness. This war, unlike the American Revolution which created the first American states, determined what kind of nation it would be. Though there are many reasons for the cause of the American Civil War, one of the main reasons is the different attitudes the North and the South had toward slavery. In January of 1863, The Emancipation Proclamation was
Merriam-Webster defines a slave as “someone who is legally owned by another person and is forced to work for that person without pay.” Slavery is one of the main causes of the civil war. The South disagreed with the North and the North disagreed with the South. The South became the Confederacy. The North became the Union. This lead to many battles such as the battle of Gettysburg. The South wanted to keep slaves. The North wanted to free all the slaves. The South was gray. The North was blue. The Civil War lasted for four years. The South lost the war, all of the slaves were freed, and President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford theatre. The Confederacy seceded and fought the North.
A Civil War is a battle between the same citizens in a country. The American Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the independence for the Confederacy or the survival of the Union. By the time Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1861, in the mist of 34 states, the constant disagreement caused seven Southern slave states to their independence from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. The Confederacy, generally known as the South, grew to include eleven states. The states that remained devoted to the US were known as the Union or the North. The number one question that is never completely understood about the Civil War is what caused the war. There were multiple events that led to the groundbreaking, bloody, and political war.
The Civil War, one of America’s most bloody wars in American History. “Lincoln who in which lead the Northern U.S. during the civil war.” (Allen 310) “America became divided, because the South didn’t like the idea of Lincoln becoming president, the South also didn’t believe that slaves should be free.” (Allen 8) This began of what we all know as the Civil war. The Nation split into two the south which became the Confederates, and the North was known as the Union. Lincoln fought the Civil war not just for what he believed to be right, but also to end slavery. This is one of the quotes from the Civil war that Lincoln made, “When I think of the Sacrifice yet to be offered and the hearts and homes yet to be made desolate before this dreadful war is over, my heart is like lead within me, and I feel like hiding in a deep darkness.” (Freedmen
The Civil War was a war between the union, and confederate states in the United States that occurred from 1861-1865. Many people believed that the Civil War was about slavery and southern states right to defend their states’ rights. The confederates were fighting for their liberty and independence under the leadership of Abraham Lincoln, who they felt was a tyrant. However, the union, was fighting to preserve their territory, that was created by their founding fathers from chaos and dismemberment. President Jefferson Davis believed that the civil war was based on the confederate rights to secede from the union. Jefferson also felt that Abraham Lincoln was to blamed for the start of the civil war, since he was against slavery. Lincoln’s intended goal was to preserve the union, he claimed slavery was not the reason. “If I could save the union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all slaves I would do it, and if I could slave it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that (Shi &Tindall, 2015, pg.465)”. Lincoln told everyone that if the southern states were to return to the union that slavery would still exist. However, many people believed that Lincoln wasn’t being truthful.
