The history of the Iberian Peninsula has lead to influence from many different cultures throughout history. These influences are especially visible in architecture. Looking specifically at medieval Spain and the buildings that were constructed in this time frame, one can see the influence different cultures had throughout the region. Some of the best examples for this come in the form of Gothic Cathedrals. Greatly inspired by the French structures that started the movement, many Spanish cathedrals exhibit not elements of French influence, but also Islamic influence as well. While most study of Spanish cathedrals has focused on southern Spain and narrowed in on identifying the Islamic influence within their design, northern Spain also provides some wonderful examples of the influence from both French and Islamic culture, particularly in Leon and Burgos respectively. In this study, I will examine Spanish Gothic architecture and the different influences on it through a comparison of the French inspire Leon and the Islamic Influenced Burgos. In my research, I will focus on their similarities and differences, both in history and design. Because there is limited research on these two cathedrals in particular, I will investigate scholarship on similar cathedrals to find scholarly approaches I may be able to apply to these case
Two buildings, the Hagia Sophia and the Great Mosque of Cordoba, can show us two separate peoples and their approach to constructing architecture that was devoted to their religions. However, while religion played a huge role, there are similarities as well between the two that show that the rulers who commissioned these buildings were interested in mimicking beauty and showing the world that their building was the most beautiful and perhaps the most elite of its time as well as proving their divinity as a ruler of a great nation.
In this excerpt, von Simson looks at how the writings of intellectuals influenced the development of Gothic architecture. He begins by looking at the writings of St. Augustine and his love for music and how the importance of measurement found in music also applies to architecture. He then goes on to address two important schools of thought that influenced the formation of the Gothic style: The Platonists with their focus on cosmology, and the monks at Clairvaux, including St. Bernard, who focused on spirituality. In this section, von Simson focuses on the former and the connection between the cosmos and the Gothic cathedral. He argues that these medieval scholars saw God as an architect and the cosmos as his cathedral. In his study of both St. Augustine and the Plantonists, von Simson works to identify the ways in which these intellectual schools of thought influenced Gothic architecture.

During the 15th century, many considered Spain insignificant. However, within a century it became a world-dominant power in Europe. Although Spain only took a brief time to rise, it was also short-lived. The rise of Spain was due to its flourishing culture, stable political system and successful voyages to the New World. On the other hand, its decline was due to religious control, resistance from other countries and inflation.
Much of the architecture in the Romanesque era evolved into Gothic architecture. The Gothic era ran from the 12th century into the 16th century. There wasn’t necessarily a clean break from Romanesque to Gothic styles of architecture, but rather a gradual shift in design. The main characteristics of Gothic architecture are the pointed ribbed vaults and arches, flying buttresses and, in place of solid walls, a cluster of columns. Due to the vertical emphasis of the design, the archways could be redesigned and stretched or pointed. Death. Rape. Torture. Enslavement. These were some of the horrific tragedies Indigenous peoples endured as Iberians during the 15th to 16th century entered and ravaged their world. As the Spanish empire spread their colonies into the Americas, many Indigenous peoples suffered the wake of the Spanish thirst for power and profit. Iberians depicted the Indigenous peoples as naïve and inferior because Iberians believed they were religiously and socially superior on the account of Christianity and their assessment of a “civilized” culture. Caused by this superiority complex, the Indigenous peoples were subjected to many hardships.
Robert A. Scott wrote The Gothic Enterprise in an attempt to give readers a bit of insight into the world of cathedrals. He moves from topic to topic, explaining how Gothic Cathedrals came to be, how they were constructed, and who ran them. Two course themes very applicable to Scott’s text are “How Technologies Develop” and “Technology and the Environment.” Over the nearly 500 year period of cathedral building, technologies to make the process easier were developed. For example, the windlass were used to hoist the heaver timbers up to the roofs of the cathedrals. The elements of Gothic style and their gradual elaboration over a period of rather more than a century came first at the opening of the 12th century. After the year 1000 there was a fully coordinated Gothic art particularly marked by the invention of windows with baltracy, Jean d’ Orbais probably used it first at Rheims cathedral during the generation following 1211, why the east end was begun. A century followed with classic poise in which an international architecture reached its peak and produce perfect forms of castle and palace, cathedrals enriched with painting patterned tiles, figure sculpture and stained glass (“The Flowering” 92).
The Gothic style, dating between the 12th century and 16th century, began in France and eventually spread throughout the rest of Europe. An example of the first true Gothic church was St. Denis of Paris. Now, it is considered one of our finest artistic periods, but at the time, the term “gothic” did not exactly hold the same meaning it does today. The name came from the Goths and was used rather negatively when describing this style of architecture as they considered it to be similar to the works of the barbarians from which the name was derived.
Although it does resemble Gothic architecture, it does so in a unique way that is characteristic of the architect Antoni Gaudi (The Sagrada Familia). However, Gaudi’s masterpiece does not follow the definition of Gothic style architecture. “This new architecture, based on the precision of geometry, can be effectively adapted to the new graphic and building technologies. As a consequence, the quality of the works in the Sagrada Familia increases clearly as the construction processes technology is improved. This project is therefore advanced for its time and is also very suitable to the technologies of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries” (Aguado et al., 94). Gaudi believes that the inside of La Sagrada Familia should be left strictly for worship and the outside should tell the story of the Catholic faith. The story that Gaudi wishes to portray can be told by the towers, the east entrance, and the west entrance, which all resemble different aspects of the life of Jesus Christ. This is uncharacteristic of Gothic style cathedrals and basilicas because there are usually small chapels inside the church that explain the stories that relate to Catholicism. Gaudi also has a unique style of architecture that uses geometry to create pillars, columns, arches, as well as allow more light to enter his Gothic style building that had never been seen before. At a point in history a lot of moors occupied a great portion of Spain and they created some beautiful architecture with a Spanish twist to it which includes the great mosque of Cordoba which has a church embedded in it. Throughout history the Spanish architecture has been shaped by the changing trends in Europe. In the start of the 12th century the gothic style was introduced which greatly influenced the styles in the buildings like the cathedral of Toledo, Burgos and Leon. The renaissance trend in Europe greatly influenced the Spanish architecture. Spanish architectures were not just about buildings they were also a means of communication. Each architecture that was created reflected the community’s values, pursuits and culture. Each Spanish building erected showed the dominance of a cultural group in the community and the geographical area it was erected in showed the extent of their power and dominance. Such buildings often bore an identifying sign for example the sign of a church was different from that of a mosque. The church’s sign was significantly that of a cross while that of a mosque bore that of a crescent moon and a star and it signified the significance or dominance of a religious group or cultural group in that area. The middle ages were an exciting period in the history of Spanish architecture and it was at that time there was the entrance of the moors which means Muslim in Spanish. And there was a clash between Muslims and Christians in that time of history. At that time the Christians and Muslims emerged their cultures together to form the Mozarabic architecture. It was not uncommon to see a church being converted to a mosque and vice versa. Gothic art flourished from the 12th century to the 16th century in Europe in response of the Byzantine and Romanesque tradition. Although Gothic is associated with arts, its most prominent use is in architecture, mainly for its pointed arch and flying buttress. To this day, the Gothic style is taken as a ‘label’ for visual arts such as concept art designs, yet the meaning stray from the original context, thus becoming rarely accurate.
Fire is viewed as destruction by many, but it helped to produce growth in Gothic architecture. Many of Christianity’s beliefs are reflected in different aspects of art. The stained glass and verticality of Gothic churches is a key change from Romanesque style churches. The Gothic church found creative ways to illustrate images of important events in history through tapestry. Even the general shape and design of the Romanesque churches versus Gothic churches show Christians values. The sculptures outside of churches have evolved over time to correspond with Christian’s beliefs of Homo faber. The change in design of Romanesque churches to the new architecture of Gothic style churches shows how Christian’s incorporated their religion into churches. Christianity’s beliefs and values are directly reflected through the changes of architecture and style from Romanesque to Gothic churches along with visual and literary art.

Many of the cathedrals are fragile due to age, neglect, pollution, and insufficient funds available to restore these historical and magnificent buildings. Nevertheless, visitors to these architectural masterpieces are fascinated by the design and structure of these churches. The cathedral builders using their own ingenuity, expertise, and limited resources were able to defy the laws of gravity and time. (Icher 30)
