The turning point from the dominating top-down news model before 1992 to a mixture of both top-down and bottom-up models after the 1992 Gennifer Flowers affair changed how news reached the public eye indefinitely. Also with this change, the positive feedback model emerged as a driving force to elicit strong reactions from viewers. Today, there are numerous news sources that fall into each category. The New York Times, National Public Radio, and The Guardian can all be considered top-down news sources. Each of these news sources has a very similar style when presenting a given news story sticking closely to the who’s, what’s, where’s, why’s and how’s of journalism. Conversely, the bottom-up news sources like Twitter, Huffington Post, and Facebook tend to stray from these models focusing more heavily on videos, images, and the response to such news often highlighting on the aspects that elicit the most/deepest responses. Although in some cases these sources may attempt to expose the public’s emotions, this does not always constitute as a positive feedback model. The New York Times article entitled “3 Who Studied Unusual States of Matter Win Nobel Prize in Physics” epitomizes top-down news sources by directly referencing the who’s, what’s, where’s, why’s, and how’s of journalism.
