How To Be A Dental Hygienist Essay

Dental Hygienist I have chose this career because I enjoy helping people and dental part of the body fascinates me. I expect to learn the process of how to become a dental hygienist and the education plan that I need to have prepared after high school. I am also expecting to learn the typical day and hours a dental hygienist works. The sources of information that I will be using is the internet and background information from previous guest speakers I have had before.

The career I am pursuing is dental hygiene. Dental hygienists clean patient’s teeth, examine the mouth for diseases like gingivitis. My mom works for a pediatric dentist and I spend a lot of time at her work. That’s what made me choose this career. I love the atmosphere and how friendly everyone is.

I am currently studying at CFCC to get into the Dental Assisting program. Upon graduating, I would like to acquire a job at an orthodontists office. The employment for this occupation is actually expected to grow much faster than average; between 2008 and 2018, employment is expected to grow 36 percent. The job demand in the Cape Fear area seems to be fairly higher than other areas in North Carolina, and higher than some other states as well.

After shadowing Dental Hygienist I have learned a lot about what is expected in the profession. Some traits that I found are very important to posses are, being able to properly communicate with your patients, be very detailed oriented, and have a positive and patient personality.

My goals after high school are to study dental hygiene. In order to become a Dental Hygienist, i'll have to earn an associate's degree. Some of the community colleges i’m thinking about enrolling in are Portland community college and Mt.Hood community college. I will attend one of those community for two years then transfer to University of Oregon. I would like to get an internship at a dental office while attending school. An internship will help me get an experience of what it's like to be a dental hygienist.

To start, I have always had an interest in the health field and knew it was where I saw my future. I came across dental hygiene and quickly became fascinated. I learned just how important it can be and how many tend to overlook it. Given the opportunity, I would like to make sure my patients understand the importance of dental hygiene and share my knowledge. I feel because I have been given an opportunity that others weren’t so fortunate to receive; it is my responsibility to give back. I come from a small community in Northern New Mexico in which I plan to return and offer my knowledge and skills. After graduation, I plan on working for a modern pediatric dental practice close to home. I am seeking to work for a dental facility with an average paying job possession for a registered dental hygienist. The benefits I am mostly interested in are 2 weeks of paid vacation leave, health insurance, free dental services for my immediate family and I, and a 401(k) retirement savings plan. Also, I am seeking for a facility that is all electronic, paperless, and that has advanced dental equipment preferably from 8am-4pm. The area I plan to work in is the Jonesboro, Georgia area so I can work close to home.

All states require dental hygiene license obtained by State Dental Board. As it stated earlier, requirements varies from state to state. During two years of program, students are required to attend lectures, labs and clinics. The majority college program requires the completion of courses such as radiology, Dental head and neck anatomy, pain control, pharmacology, public health, medical emergency, oral pathology and periodontology. By end of two years, students are required to take written state boards and regional clinical boards. Usually dental hygienist needs Associate’s degree in “dental hygiene” to begin working.
