The Life of a Nurse Practitioner I’ve always loved helping people, so when I tore my ACL and saw the painful journey up close, I realized how much I wanted to be a part of other people’s healing process. When I was at the hospital, I had an up close view of these nurses and doctors at work. This got me interested in health sciences. To be able to support others every day seems like the right career for me. In consideration of this interest, will becoming a nurse practitioner fulfill my need to help people? The mission for Peace Corps is to help people in need in other countries, help people from other countries understand Americans, and help Americans understand people from other countries. (About 1-4) There are a few different types of volunteers, but the most popular volunteer program is 2 years long. These volunteers can work in over 60 countries for their 2 year service. Many college graduates try this and 94% of the openings for Peace Corps is in this position. (Is Peace Corps Right For Me? 4) Next, there are six main groups to choose from when becoming a volunteer. These groups consist of education, environment, health, agriculture, community economic development, and youth in development. In relation to becoming a nurse, the health group promotes many important health issues. Since these volunteers are helping in poor countries, they focus on nutrition, hygiene, clean water, HIV/AIDS, and child health. The only requirements needed is that you are a US citizen over 18, but it is helpful to go to college specializing in one of the six groups stated above. Peace Corps is a free organization and the only costs would be for some medical exams. They would pay for the plane tickets to get to and from your country at the beginning and end of the service. Everyone gets two vacation days a month to explore or see family. After the two years, each volunteer gets up to $8,000 to get settled in at home again.
