Anyone who knows me personally, knows I drink a lot of soda. When I go to restaurant the first thing I ask for is a Dr. Pepper. When I’m having a bad day the first thing I do to try and make it better is grab a can of soda. Drinking soda is bad habit of mine, and I’m well aware of it. It’s just my drinking soda isn’t that bad, it could be a lot worse. Nothing brings me more comfort on a stressful day as the first bubbly drink of an ice cold Dr. Pepper. This is what I thought before the start of spring semester my junior year of college. Little did I know that I would be taking a class that require I give it up. When I was first given the assignment I immediately began to wonder what I could give up. I seriously thought long and hard about it. I was stumped, I had no clue what I should give up. Not even thinking about the fact that the substance I should be giving up was in my hand at that very moment. So I did what most college students do when they need advice on an assignment, I called my mom. …show more content…
The only problem was it was almost time for me to start the assignment, and I wasn’t too sold on the idea of giving soda up. This is when my mom asked me how much I was spending a soda a week. I replied more than I should be. This is also when I admitted that soda was what I should give up for my assignment. I started trying to find other healthy things to drink instead of soda. While I was shopping I decided that the only way I would be able to stop drinking soda is if I somehow could find a healthy drink that was fizzy. I knew I could deal with not having the caffeine I just wasn’t so sure about the fizz. At this point I was in the preparation stage of change. I had decided I wanted to give up soda, and was trying to find ways to give it up. Like some in the preparation stage I still need a little convincing from my mom that I could in fact live without something fizzy to
I limited myself to three a week rather than drinking a can of soda each day like I was accustomed to. I had a real bad habit of drinking soda for every meal or at any time that I was thirsty. Therefore, I chose to minimize the number of cans I would drink. During this first week, I still experienced the effects of drinking soda such as burping and mild gas problems. I was bothered by often I was releasing gas and having headaches, but I knew it would get better once I got used to not drinking soda it would get better. I knew that this goal would be challenging to accomplish, but I was up for it. I knew if I tried hard to achieve this that I would be setting myself to be a healthier
The first thought that most likely comes to mind is, ¨how could a beverage hurt or have such an effect on you?¨ The answer lies in the text of Russ Lloyd’s article in Scope magazine, ¨Putting warning labels on sugary drinks would save lives¨. In the text, the author addresses side effects that soda has and could have on a person, mentioning serious problems
The serving size for a soda is usually about 8-ounce, the allowed amount in New York is 16-ounce which is double the recommended amount, but nevertheless a 16-ounce soda is a healthier choice than the banned sizes. It is a controversial topic due to people not liking being told what they can and cannot do and them not liking having a limited number of options. Even though the soda ban has a few downsides, there are exponentially more benefits to having it. The soda ban is a great idea due to it making a healthier society, it helps us make healthier decision, and it is more of an inconvenience as in you can still get it but it takes more effort.
On October 11th, 2016 Cook County, which includes the city of Chicago passed a one cent per ounce soda tax. Due to a lawsuit by the Illinois Merchant Association the new law did not even come into effect until August 2nd 2017. Now, due to a repeal, the law will cease to be in effect by December 1st, giving this law an effective life of about four months. The tax seems a no brainer with about 25% of United States boys and girls suffering from obesity. However the law had two major shortcomings. First, it had a bad start due to a poor implementation of the tax, since the tax was originally levied on producers instead of at the point of sale. This caused what is known as a double tax situation, soda companies were being charged two taxes in

I gave up caffeine for the 30 days of abstinence project. I drink iced coffee almost everyday even when its cold, and I drink soda everyday multiple times. I started drinking soda at a very young age, but my intake increased when I was a teenager. Drinking caffeine has had a negative impact on my body. I have gained a lot of weight from drinking soda. Also when I drink coffee my stomach hurts, but I drink it anyways to get through the day. I am well aware of how caffeine negatively impacts me, but that doesn’t make it easy for me to stop drinking caffeine.
The drastic change in society’s eating patterns from the 70’s to today amount to the introduction of multinational food corporations such as Coca-Cola. This is because people nowadays drink Coca-Cola products in place of a meal or snack. These drinks contain an average of 9 teaspoons of sugar per can of drink. This impacts an individual’s physical wellbeing as the drink has no nutritional value, it makes people feel sluggish and fatigued. Furthermore, this affects ones mental and emotional wellbeing as they won’t feel that good after consuming it. People chose to purchase Coca-Cola products over other drink choices such as milk, because it’s a lot cheaper and you get value for your money. Therefore, if parents have the attitude of valuing convenience

According to livestrong.com in 2015, “Drinking large amounts of soda may affect your brain health and alter your risk of certain diseases. Naturopathic physician Scott Olson says that several scientific studies suggest that a high sugar diet may increase your risk of schizophrenia, depression and anxiety,” (Adams, “Can Food Cause Chemical Imbalance in the Brain”). Sugar in soda can advance to permanent long-term damage to the brain. Additionally, the sugar in a person’s body can increase blood pressure and dilate pupils. While, this evidence had been scientifically proven precisely there are still people who don’t see the ethics in the soda ban. That’s why a state judge ruled against it. According to BusinessInsider.com in 2010, “A New York state judge struck down Mayor Bloomberg's controversial ban on large sodas on Monday, arguing that the restrictions on sugary sweetened drinks did not make sense, partly because the ban wasn't evenly enforced.” (Spector, “New Yorkers Will Be Significantly Fatter Because Of The Soda Ban Repeal”). Although the judge thinks the ban is inefficient he is inaccurate, the restrictions on the ban are based on scientific evidence. The ban will still make sense, even though it does not include diet sodas and fruit juices. Everybody knows fruit juice and diet sodas are better for people
I've been trying to drink sparkling water, but it is not as satisfying as pop. I guess I miss the sweetness of pop. So, I've beens sneaking in those tiny Coke cans trying to trick myself into believing they are not that bad. But, I was still keeping my eyes open for something new.
Those figures include teens who consumed little or no soda pop. For the average 13- to 18-year-old boy or girl drinker, soft drinks provide about 9% of calories. Boys and girls in the 75th percentile of consumption obtained 12% of their calories from soft drinks, and those in the 90th percentile about 18% of their calories." (USDA) As much as this world revolves around weight and looks, it seems that by giving up a soda or two per day would be a very smart start towards that "diet" that many of us are looking for. By giving up this one beverage, and not replacing it with something as sugary, it would be a big step in the right direction for people who are not happy with the way that they look. Many nutritionists state that soft drinks and other calorie-rich, nutrient-poor foods can fit into a good diet. In theory, they are correct, but, regrettably, they ignore the fact that most Americans consume great quantities of soft drinks and meager quantities of healthful foods. One
of drinking caffeinated drinks. I know that caffeine and sugar leads to weight gain, heart problems and diabetes. If I drink a soda, I will monitor my behavior, feelings and thought process on the SUDS Scale, morning, noon and the evenings. The SUDS Scale will rate my mood behavior from (0-10). The O will represent no urge to drink while 10 will represent the most urgency for drinking Coke Zeros. My goal is to stop drinking Coke Zeros or at least limit my intake to one soda per day until I eventually quit altogether. I believe in the weaning of or the gradual take away is more promising than just completely stop doing something all of a sudden. I will journal my behavior, thought process and emotions and then evaluate them in daily totals.
I grew up in a home where nothing artificial was allowed, only organic and natural. If it came from a garden or a field it usually made it to our table. We drank hot tea every day, there was never any popcorn, pizza, or soda. I still remember the first time I had a slice of pizza and an ice cold glass of Coca-Cola in 1990. It was like a whole new world had opened up before me. I had fallen in love with soda. I loved the sugary sweet stuff, with its carbonation dancing down your throat sip by sip. It was heavenly. From that day on, no more hot tea, only soda all the way the colder the better. As the years past my fondness of soda grew into an obsession. Somewhere in a twenty-year span it became normal for me to go to Walmart and buy 14-20 two liters of Coca-Cola ever week and yes I did drink that much soda every week.
