Criminals tend to try and attack people who they believe will not be able to fight back. This is evidenced by the fact that “every public mass shooting since 1950, except two has occurred in a gun free zone”(Pratt). This quote provides evidence supporting the fact that shooters avoid armed targets. Due to this fact it is clear that allowing people to be armed greatly decreases the chance they will come into contact with a shooter and be at risk to lose their life. Even if an attack does occur, allowing citizens to be armed often saves lives, “Take the Uber driver in Chicago earlier this year, who was licensed to conceal and carry and who shot a gunman who was firing on a crowd of people”(Phillips). Had the Uber driver not been armed more lives likely would have been lost. Situations like this one are why it is extremely important that gun laws not be increased. If gun laws in the United States are increased criminals will still be able to either find one of the 200 million guns already in existence or find another way to hurt people( “Gun Control Laws”). Taking away guns from the public just makes people easier targets because they lose the ability to defend themselves. By increasing gun laws in the United States, many American Citizens will lose their lives due to the fact that criminals will be more inclined to attack people they know are unarmed and people will lack the ability to defend
On September 24, 1976, Washington, D.C. placed a ban on all handguns; the ban was later overturned on June 26, 2008. With this regulation, no one other than a police officer was permitted to own a handgun. During this time, the Washington, D.C. murder rate was 73% higher than it was at the start of the ban. Contrary to what many Gun control activist argue about the increasing amount of murders and gun related deaths, according to the FBI homicide chart the murder rate is going decreasing every year. The November 13th Paris attack was a very unfortunate event that took the lives of hundreds of people at the hands of terrorists. This event led to be a example on why gun control doesn't stop terrorist and in fact, puts them more in harms way. France has long banned its citizens to carry assault weapons long ago yet, the terrorists where able to attain high power AK- 47s from Gun trafficking. Years prior France banned the right for its citizens to carry concealed weapons and experts feel the attack would have ended differently if they where allowed to a carry concealed
Urbanization and Industrialization brought millions of people to growing cities, these growing cities were ill equipped to deal with growing population rate. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of a surplus of job opportunities, faster production, and more amenities, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were angersome working conditions, poor quality of life, and child labor.
Late 20th century Los Angeles, California was a bustling, diverse, and segregated city. Both El Norte (1983) and Falling Down (1993) depict Los Angeles in revealing ways. Falling Down in particular has many shots of the city itself; in fact, the first scene in the film takes place in a classic LA traffic jam on the highway. It shows cars lined up and not moving on the highway as far as the eye can see, with construction going on around them. It is also very hot in LA. The people are sweating, it’s sunny outside, bugs are flying around, and there are palm trees around the highway. Similarly, one of the last shots in El Norte shows a busy highway with the LA skyline in the background. That shot with the skyscrapers, cars driving quickly by, and palm trees is one of the most iconic images of LA in either film.
Why do you think McCarthy has chosen not to give his characters names? How do the generic labels of “the man” and “the boy” affect the way you /readers relate to them?
In “Our Blind Spot about Guns,” written by Nicholas Kristof, New York Times columnist states his belief on the regulation of cars and how it relates to the regulation of guns. In this article, Kristoff shows his stance of strongly believing that guns should be regulated as cars and their drivers are for a change and the saving of lives to occur. He states that before the combination of cars and guns killed more than 30,000 Americans every year. With all the car regulations in place, it is shown that there is one car fatality per 100 million miles driven. Due to these statistics, Kristoff believes that with gun regulation 10,000 lives could be saved. Before the regulation of cars, “…it became
Gentrification is a trend in urban neighborhood where it indicates change in a population where it could have much much impact on a city. They kind of impact could be economic where it could affect neighbors tremendously. As said by smith, gentrification is driven by the demands of production and the necessity to earn profit among builders, developers, landlords, mortgage lenders, government agencies, and real estates as well (Smith, 128), especially here in New York
There is no critique of the structured system that dominates people of color and allows for privileges to be given to white people, nor is there any mention of the idea of capitalism being apart of the issue. “Finally, at the urban scale gentrification is predicated on long-term patterns of investment and disinvestment in urban neighborhoods. The spatiality of uneven development is witnessed in the coexistence of environments of value whose landscapes reflect wealth, investment and development and deteriorating natural and built environments that, under particular political economic circumstances, become targets for reinvestment and development.” (Katz, 12) In the history of the U.S there have been many times when the government has knowingly helped higher class white citizens
There is a drastic need for safety in America. Every day people are robbed, raped, and killed. Something needs to be done to keep individuals safe from violent crimes. The trick is to do so without sacrificing the rights of those individuals. Many government officials push for more gun control, easier search warrants, or longer penalties for crimes to attempt to prevent violent crimes from occurring. This is an entirely wrong approach. As Ben Franklin once said, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” These wise words help to prove the idea that something needs to be done, but not at the expense of individual’s rights. There must be a much better way to stop violent
Like many urban areas, Austin, Texas has seen a monumental growth in housing and real estate prices as a result of gentrification. Areas that were once affordable to lower income families such as the eastern part of the city were now steadily becoming unattainable for many, which in effect priced people out to outlining suburbs of Round Rock and Pflugerville, a inconvenience to many who now had to make longer commutes into the city. Therefore, as a result, some of its very own citizens decided to fight against this unequal system and attempt to make housing more affordable for local residents through the creation of community owned land trusts. These trusts act as a nonprofit that acquires pieces of property or land with the sole stated purpose
Many families and individuals find themselves at some point questioning the advantages of city living versus country living. It is nearly impossible to find a good answer to this question. What is good for one person might not be good for another. Some people enjoy the busy, hyper active metropolitan city where they can use all amenities and have unlimited opportunities for work and leisure. At the same time, other people feel the urge to be closer to Mother Nature, relaxation, beauty, and peace. They take pleasure in living in the calm and peaceful environment of the countryside and spending their free time fishing, hiking, picking berries in the woods, or playing in the creek. In my opinion, the nature
Congestion and traffic pollution has been a major problem in New York City for years. There have been many laws, tolls, and fines implemented over the past few decades to try and fix the problem. Yet, congestion still exists. Congestion occurs when there is overcrowding on roadways that’s causes traffic jams. There are several reasons for the severity of this issue. Congestion causes a lot of delays in the city. It is unlikely that people are on time for anything, even if they planned ahead. With traffic in the city the way it is, you can’t blame them. The indirect effect of congestion is traffic pollution. Traffic pollution is polluting of the environment caused by harmful toxins and gases given released by cars. The amount of pollution
Cities are characterized by the patterns of streets and squares that define their arrangement, a concept that undergoes frequent changes since the establishment of cities 10,000 years ago. There are multitude factors that influence such changes with system of government, values, population size, values, artistic sensibility, building methods, design techniques, paving techniques, military considerations, and transport technology being the main determinants. Medieval architectural designs emphasized on rigid grid forms, that contemporary writers of the history of urban planning and design, assume the presence of grids even in plans where they exist in approximate forms. Absence of grids is often perceived as lack of planning. Nevertheless, it is critical to note that the complex patters of streets in medieval cities were neither random nor chaotic.
Why do students and their parents pay such a large amount of money to attend the University of Dayton if there is not going to be any place for parking? I am a first year student at the university so I understand that I am not permitted to have my car on campus (Handbook). My boyfriend on the other hand, lives at least a half hour away and comes to visit me several times a week. He arrives and has to drive for a very long time trying to find a place to park where he will not receive a ticket. He has tried to park everywhere we can think of, but it never seems to work out. The first few times he came over public safety/the police department was willing to give out temporary permits for visitors and
