AGREE Cities are known for being packed with cars and people, but Taras Grescoe argues in her New York Times article that cities should be made car free. Cars are obviously one of the most popular choices for going from one place to another, but more recently cars have also become a popular weapon in terrorist attacks. Cars are easily accessible, which makes them an unsuspecting, “instrument of mass murder,” This was recently demonstrated in Charlottesville, VA, where a 20-year-old man has been accused of ramming his Dodge Challenger into a crowd of people during protests, killing one person and injuring 19 more. The most obvious solution to this problem would be to ban cars in cities all together. There are many other ways to get from one …show more content…
According to Taras Grescoe in her New York Times article, car attacks have become an increasingly common mode of terrorism. Although this might be true, that does not mean that cities should get rid of cars altogether. Even though cars might be turning into a weapon, they still stand to be a popular and efficient mode of transportation. Out of the thousands of cars that go through big cities everyday, “In the last three years, at least 14 vehicle-ramming attacks,” have happened in Western cities. Thousands of cars safely go through cities, but only about five car attacks happen per year. Banning cars in might stop these attacks, but it might cause other problems with thousands of people relying on their cars to get them from one place to another. Banning cars might also help the environment, but an increasing amount of cars are already becoming more environmentally friendly. In more recent years, there has been a large increase in the amount of electric and fuel efficient cars, which is helping to prevent dangerous levels of pollution. No matter what the reason is, banning cars in cities is not going to do anything besides cause more
This case study, written in 2009 is not the only case where a major data breach has occurred within organizations. In the late 2011 Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN) was breached impacting up to 77 million user’s accounts including data on names, address and possibly credit card details. In late 2013 Target had a cyber-attack that compromised a large quantity of its data and had 110 million accounts compromised. Finally in September 2014 Apple had their iCloud server breached by hacking that compromised all the users of the online server. These occurrences still have some unanswered questions and several experts have yet to decipher the actual reason as to why the security breach occurred.
With a declining or no use of cars can result in the reduction of pollution quite tremendously. They can by reducing the greenhouse effect. As the author reports in the article, “In German Suburb Life Goes On Without Care” by Elisabeth Rosenthal, “Passenger cars are responsible for 12 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe… and up to 50 percent in some car-intensive areas in the United States.” Therefore, with cars being a leading factor of greenhouse gas emissions, reducing their usage would have a positive effect on the environment. After days of near-record pollution,
This pollution increases health risks by introducing people to harmful toxins released by cars, specifically in the asthmatic population. Hence, one can see the problems associated with traffic congestion and pollution. There are several ways to counteract the problem of traffic congestion and pollution. Firstly, the most practical solution to New York City’s congestion problem is to decrease the number of cars on the road. One plausible way would be to promote and offer alternative methods of transportation such as buses, subways, and taxis. If people used more public transportation there would be fewer cars on the road, less congestion, and less traffic pollution. Another alternative would be to increase toll prices. By increasing tolls on bridges and tunnels, people would be much less inclined to drive to the city and as a result there would be less traffic congestion and pollution. Gridlock is a major cause of traffic problems in Manhattan. If we were to implement more severe fines for blocking intersections, people would not try to “beat the light,” in effect decreasing overall congestion. A third approach to try and resolve this issue would be to change some one-way streets to two-way streets. Doing this would allow easier access to destinations and would eliminate indirect route taking. As a result, overall pollution would decrease. These are some of the methods that would be viable in decreasing
Our issue is that we need a new vehicle because ours was wrecked and the rental car we were given to use after the wreck by the insurance company is about to expire, leaving us no mode of transportation. We are looking into buying a used vehicle from an advertisement in the local paper. We weren’t sure if the vehicle was still available so we have called the owner and inquired. We do not know who we are buying the car from but we are interested in purchasing the Volkswagen Jetta because of the advertisement in our local newspaper. Just from reading the car ad; we deem that the car fits all our needs and we need to get in touch with the owner fast in order to make sure they don’t sell it to someone else.
Should cars stay central in America? I think we should keep cars central in America because we can go anywhere. We can go different places and explore more things. They have been around for hundreds of years and people use them all over the world. So why would you even take that away to just find new ways to transport people?
In this article “How Safer Streets Can Thwart Terrorists” written by Yonah Freemark, educates us about multiple terrorist attacks that have occurred specifically in the New York area and how the state is working to develop a safer approach. In May of 2017 at Times Square a motorist drove through a large crowd killing one person and injuring many others. Had it not been for a three foot guarding rail, the motorist could have killed many more. Another attack like this happened previously where an average of sixteen pedestrians were killed and since then have doubled. New York is not only the victim of these kind of attacks; famous places like France, Netherlands, and London constantly have attacks like these happen.
In 2011, 23 year old Katie Sharify was involved in an automobile accident that damaged her spine, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down. Katie’s medical team proposed an experimental approach to her therapy using stem cell research, in which stem cells taken from a 5 day old embryo could be converted into cells used for communication between the brain and body. Seeing the glimmer of hope, Katie accepted. However, the funding was cut shortly after her treatment, and all of the hope she had been clinging to was seemingly lost. Three years and a 14.3 million dollar grant later, however, the research she had participated in was deemed safe and enabled to
I agree with the statement that says that North Americans have become too dependent on the automobile transportation, because the prefer to use their cars instead of walk or use a bycicle.
1.Should city centers have cars on the streets? There are pros and cons to have cars in the city centers. The good thing about having cars banned in the city center is that Banning motor vehicles has made working and living in city centers much more enjoyable for commuters. Without the gases that the vehicles let out, commuters no longer gag on harmful fumes while rushing to and from Work.
In reaction to the attacks, the European Union imposed harsh laws against law-abiding gun owners, but did nothing to ban motor vechicles afer a single terrorist murdered 86 people with a cargo truck in France in 2016.
In today’s society, we depend on vehicles for everything. Since the invention of the automobile, Americans have had it easy. We have cut back on the amount of time it takes to transport produce, mail, and people. We are now able to travel more freely to see family, seek better employment, and take vacations at leisure. The automobile industry not only effects transportation, but it makes a huge impact on the economy as well. If cars were banned from the United States, Americans social lives would be left in turmoil, as well as our economic future.
In recent years, major cities across the globe have developed innovative new methods of transportation that could revolutionize the way humans travel and ultimately replace automobiles throughout the industrialized world. Many supporters of this movement believe restricting the use of cars will have a positive impact on society as a whole. Some people believe that taking away automobiles is preposterous given the gravity of which citizens depend on them; although true, replacing cars would have significant benefits throughout society that would outweigh this consequence and ultimately create a new global social order. Restricting cars in cities and encouraging alternate methods of transportation would reduce humans’ carbon footprint, make cities
Week four covered the concepts that pertain to writing reports for business, within it was the careful planning of the report and managing the information that has been obtained, concluding with how to effectively carry out the action of writing the report out. Within these concepts it was proved that significant emphasis should not just be placed on the way in which business reports the information, but also the purpose, content, and what the information is conveying to the audience it is prepared for. The importance that surrounds these reports is due to the fact that they are utilized as a tool to make business decisions, determine areas of opportunity, and solve problems that can arise (Newman, 2015). Given the various ways in which reports are utilized as one might imagine the information obtained, content, and audience might vary. Yet interestingly, just because certain business reports have to exist due to corporate standards might not necessarily mean that additional reports should not nor that better reporting practice should not be implemented. Unfortunately, a company that might have found this out a bit too late is Wells Fargo. The very well-known banking establishment found itself in
Automobiles play a major role in today's society. Almost every American owns at least one motorized transportation vehicle. Some say they make our lives better by reaching places faster than before. Others say they are a harmful to the environment. Have they made our society better or worse? They may be fast, but do we as humans want our environment to suffer because of time. Face it, cars pollute. And they release destructive chemicals into the air. Air pollution can threaten the health of many subjects in the environment including human beings.
The automobile has had a tremendous impact on society and the environment since its development in the beginning of the 20th century. Today, there are over 500 million motor vehicles on the earth. The automobile's efficiency, style, and performance have changed over the years, but there is one thing that has not - the pollution the automobile generates. Because of the pollution, people find themselves asking whether this technology has helped our society or hurt it. Should the consequences of the automobile be cause to eliminate it? Or should science develop technology to eliminate the pollution caused by the car?
