A statue constructed in the name of liberty arose from the expansive Atlantic more than a century ago. The values of equality and justice coupled with the promises of freedom remain immoveable like the cooper medium and the stone foundation of which the statue arises. An icon ingrained it the spirit of the United States, the Statue of Liberty is the physical representation of American ideals. It is the “light of liberty” that illuminates the path for the “tired,” and the “poor,” seeking shelter from the shadows of tyranny and persecution. The statue has been symbol of hope in a better future and a new beginning to immigrants seeking a fresh start. Ideals, along with the symbols that represent them, however are merely man made. And like the

America’s promise promises its people an infinite amount of freedom. Freedom is what is ensured to America’s people. The Statue of Liberty greets those that lay their eyes on her, as seen in the illustration on page nine.

“Let America Be America Again” takes a sullen, down-hearted approach. Hughes evokes all of the wonderful, patriotic images of America, but also makes the reader question these images. The reader is forced to remember some of the atrocities that are also America. Throughout the poem Hughes asks rhetorical questions to cause the reader to pause and think. For some America never lived up to it’s reputation, and for these some Hughes uses the anaphora “I am the” and continues to list all of the people who were never able to obtain the American Dream, “I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil. I am the worker, sold to the machine. I am the Negro, servant to you all.” The poem’s mood is that America should return to what it was designed to be rather than what it ever actually was. War, poverty, suffering, disease… These are all backdrops of humanity's darkest hours, yet we are strongest when we stand together. When efforts are united for a greater good, when benevolence and generosity override selfishness and fear. America has been a leader in benevolence and altruism, assisting those in times of hardship. Let’s get something straight: America was never “great.” From views on African Americans, immigrants, religions, homosexuals, and even women, America may have overcome how harsh they treat different people, but they are still facing controversies over said topics. When President elect, Donald Trump says “make America great again,” it’s hard to understand what he means because, again, America was never actually “great.” As a character in the Netflix Original Series: Orange is the New Black said, this is the “land of the free, home of the racist.” America may have more freedoms than most countries, but Americans then and now blame minorities for our problems, when in reality, they should look in a mirror.

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most well know symbols of the United States, across the world. For this reason I chose to analyze the dramatic effect it creates, and what methods it implores to invent this "universal" meaning. It is one of the strongest visual representations of the ideals which our country is founded upon.
