When studying through a textbook, reading an online blog, or watching a YouTube video, most people simply absorb the raw information that is provided - after all, that is what those sources are generally used for. However, behind all that information lies deeper knowledge of a vast ocean of context. This context sets the criteria for effectiveness, a topic discussed in the essay “How to Read Like a Writer” by Mike Bunn. Bunn states that every text or video publisher has an intended audience that it aims to please, and they achieve those goals through a specific choice of conversation, selected diction, and an understanding of the consequences that could happen after the audience reads or watches their content. The correct choices increases the effectiveness of hooking the attention of their audience. There were several articles that displayed efforts of effectiveness for their target audience, but this essay will discuss one YouTube video that stood out amongst the rest. In the YouTube video “How Wolves Change Rivers” published by Sustainable Human, the narrator argues that the introductions of wolves to Yellowstone National Park not only altered the ecology of animals, but that they also brought upon massive improvements to the luscious environment as well. The author brings upon the conversation by discussing a term used in the food chain called the “trophic cascade”, a term that describes how the introduction of an organism at that top of the food chain can
Writing is examined in the first chapter of “Writing about Writing”, a textbook by Elizabeth Wardle and Doug Downs. Not only does it examine articulate writing, but specifically the threshold Concepts of writing: “ideas that change the way you think, write, and understand a subject,” (Wardle, Downs 2011). Terms are used to educate readers, these terms are essential for the writer to better understand how to write, and for the reader to better understand composition. Three terms seem to do this; construct, contingency, and rhetoric.
After examining “Shitty First Drafts”, by Anne Lamott, and “Write before Writing”, by Donald M. Murray, each writing process has some good prospects. Anne Lamott is a little crazy, but passionate writer that can really surprize you. In Anne Lamott 's article “Shitty First Drafts”, she believes that any writer should write a shitty first draft, and that’s how anyone ends up with a better second draft and a “terrific third draft” .Lamott declares in order to be good, the writer needs to first allow for the words and ideas to come flowing out without restriction. Donald M. Murray, an English Professor, that has a different writing process, wrote an article “ Write before Writing” . He explains, Students who are not
“Despite all the books I read, I am still surprised I became a writer,” writes Sherman Alexie in his article, “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me,” published April of 1998 in the Los Angeles Times. In his essay, Alexie describes life growing up on a Spokane Indian Reservation as a boy who learned to read in a world that didn’t encourage him to. He did this with a Superman comic, using mainly assumption and his three-year-old brain’s perception of pictures. Alexie says that his love for books came from the love and adoration he felt for his father, who collected thousands of books in their house. This love, however, came with the consequence of sticking out like a sore thumb in a society that didn’t want smart Indians. He writes, “I loved those books, but I also knew that love had only one purpose. I was trying to save my life.” By reading and writing, and by encouraging young Indian students to read and write, Alexie is trying to prove to the world that there is a place for smart Indians in society.
In How to Read Literature Like a Professor, author Thomas C. Foster extensively teaches literary conventions that teach a reader how to read between the lines. The main goal of this guide is to help a reader read to a level such as a professor, which entails being able to read analytically. Throughout Foster's literary guide, he sets out essential elements of literature that aid in the ability to read analytically. How to Read Literature Like a Professor focuses on not only external influences, but also in text elements such as structure, themes, and setting. Throughout Foster's guide there are many valuable keys to reading, some of the most prominent in literature being biblical reference, character quests, and character baptism. Chapters
Sherman Alexie the author of the essay "The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me" was born and raised on a Spokane Indian Reservation. It is very important for the audience to have an understanding of the message the writer is trying to say. Singman’s article is full of different techniques which make her article intelligible for a majority of her audience. The techniques being used make the argument of the article more effective After writing this essay it has helped me to view writing differently. The way we put words together can make a huge difference to your audience. This is the reason why we need to be for careful with our word choice, depending on what we want our audience to take from our writing. We also need to understand that not everyone will be able to understand if we do not put it in a format that is clear to the
In “How to Read Literature Like a Professor” by Thomas C. Foster there are three new concepts I took and analyzed at a deeper level when reading “Crime and Punishment” by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Foster tells us that in stories drownings or deaths that take place in water is serving a purpose whether it is to help the theme development, failure, guilt, or plot complication. In Crime and Punishment after Raskolnikov has committed the murder of his land lady. He begins to have suicidal thoughts of jumping off the bridge into the river. However, this idea does die quickly when a women standing right next to him decides to jump off the bridge. As he sees what has taken place he quickly snaps out of his guilt driven thoughts and the matter never comes up again. The water represents baptism. If ,Rasolnikov would've thrown himself into the river it would symbolize as a baptism to cleanse all his
In his book “How to Read Literature Like a Professor,” Thomas C. Foster provides a list of attributes that a fictional character may have if they are a symbolic Christ Figure in their story. The list consists of characteristics such as “very forgiving” and “came to redeem an unworthy world.” In Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” although the Old Man is thought to be an angel by the awe struck people around him, it is possible to claim that he is a Christ Figure. While the Old Man doesn’t turn water into wine, he seems to have something with the odd “miracles” occurring in the town. The Old Man’s ragged appearance is also an attribute that should be accounted for. Foster explains that “he’s dirty and unkempt and bug-ridden,
Author Thomas Foster thoroughly examines the overall concept of characters in his book “How to Read Literature Like a Professor.” He discusses round and flat character and how this impacts the eventual outcome of the characters, themselves. Although all characters are vital and add their own value to the plot, it just so happens that certain characters are more significant than others. This results in the more minor character suffering more hardships and in many cases dying in the story. This part of Foster’s book brought up many similarities to the novel “The Book Thief.”
Before creating a piece of writing, a journalist must decide on the role they would need in order to present to a certain audience. In order to successfully get the message across, the speaker’s style must factor into the content of the speech. Different types of roles the program could have are warrior, protector, healer, master, leader, and teacher. To get a better understanding on what role to use in a piece of writing, the computer program could ask itself three questions: 1. How much does the audience know about the topic?, 2.Is there anything new to
Educational Systems Need Change In the anthology Identity a Reader for Writers by John Scenters- Zapico, Cathy Davidson, in her writing “Project Classroom Makeover”, discusses how the educational system needs a big upgrade. She also talks about how so many people in today’s society seem so disinterested in school. Davidson uses rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos, and logos to get her message across to the intended audience of teachers, that the way schools are teaching needs to change.
In “Scared To Death” by Ed Yong, he expressed how the fear of wolves has affected the elk in Yellowstone National Park. The “Landscape of Fear” has taken a toll on the ecosystems that are present there. Ed Yong’s perspective on this matter is taken into great consideration by an ecologist named Laundre. Landre finds it fascinating as she looks at it as a perpetual state of apprehension. Ed Yong discusses how the “Landscape of Fear” affects the ecosystem and the relationship between wolves and elk i8n Yellowstone National Park.
The scientific community is increasing the number of studies dedicated to understanding the causes and effects of trophic cascades, due in part to human actions that are immensely decreasing the populations of apex predators worldwide. Since the mid-1900’s, numerous observations have noted the direct, and indirect, effects of apex predators on smaller animal species and plant communities. Although there is adequate evidence on the impact of apex predator removal on small scale ecosystem functioning, a question remains as to the impact that will occur on the global
I consider the essay, “Writing Is Easy!” by Steve Martin exceptionally funny because he makes several different jokes that are entertaining and humorous. One joke that he makes is that he enjoys typing nonsense as much as he enjoys actually writing: “I could be typing “kjfiu joewmv jiw” and would enjoy is just as much as typing words that actually make sense,” (5). I find this funny because it is true that some people just enjoy the feeling of their fingers on a keyboard. Another joke he makes is that when he is frustrated with writing he can just go get coffee, relax, and figure it out later.
In regards to Conservation Biology, this project included working with endangered species, predator control management practices, and top down trophic cascades and their effects on the food chain. By observing and practicing these topics and management methods, the park was able to successfully reduce the negative impacts on the parks ecosystem that were a result of the removal of the gray wolf from the area.
