How do professors read? Do they read like average people, like students, like an adult? The daunting question, only answered by Thomas C. Foster through his book, How to Read Literature like a Professor. This novel is an informational text and each one of the chapters discusses a method in writing that will help readers to better comprehend literature. Readers learn from the novel about all sorts of different methods and devices that they can use to locate and interpret connections and ideas that are normally surpassed when reading. Many times there are hidden meanings throughout the novel and readers just need to look a little harder to find them. In Thomas Foster’s book How to Read Literature like a Professor Chapter 13 “Geography Matters” is all about how the setting and location can greatly impact a story. In Anna Dressed in Blood the house that Anna was bound to is an old, depleted Victorian home and creates a lot of suspense during scenes in the house. For example, in the scene where Cas first lays eyes on Anna, she is floating down the stairs. She moves hauntingly through the room and this creates suspense so that the reader does not know what is going to happen next. Many times throughout the story the house allows people and secrets to be hidden, thus creating a more interesting storyline or plot. Symbols are also very prominent throughout the novel, How to Read Literature like a Professor, and in Chapter 11 “Is that a Symbol?” Thomas Foster gives tips on how to decipher symbol meanings. Many times, authors will leave symbols open to reader interpretation and will give clues in surrounding events to allow the reader to interpret the symbol. In Anna Dressed in Blood, Anna still wears the blood-stained dress that she was murdered in. This opens the question to why is she appearing like this? The reader could infer that she is angry about her murder or that she wants everyone to know what happened to her. Her dress is actually the key to reversing the curse so therefore the dress could mean multiple things. It could represent death and despair since it was the dress Anna was murdered in, or it could represent salvation and hope that Anna can still be saved.
