How To Start A Boys Volleyball Essay

This study is designed to bring attention to the lack of female coaches at the youth and colligate levels. Most youth and collegiate sports coaches are men in today 's world. There are many factors that play a role for this predicament. Many times in the recreation field mothers are viewed as the “team moms” and the fathers are usually the coaches. Research will show that the number of female coaches to male coaches at all levels of coaching is drastically different. The number of female athletes has increased but the number of female coaches has decreased. There have not been large amounts of research done in the recreation field surrounding this problem, but the research found in college athletics directly reflects what is happening at the youth level as well.

The setting up of co-ed, or mixed gender, teams in schools has been highly debated by many students, parents, and school staff. Some argue than not allowing girls and boys to play on the same team promotes gender stereotypes among kids, while others claim that because of differences in body size and strength, boys and girls should not be on the same team. Co-Ed teams are in place across the nation with many claiming that they “promote a healthy environment where boys and girls are equal”, but the reality is that the forming of co-ed teams in some sports like football or basketball is not a good idea because boys won’t be able to get as physical with girls as they would with boys, nor would they be able to play by the same rules.

Middle school is a time when kids attempt to figure out how they fit in, and that is exactly what I was looking to do when I started playing volleyball. I was in seventh grade when I decided to try out, and it was only because my best friend was playing. Little did I know just how organized and complex the game was; I just assumed volleyball was a more intense version of “don’t let the balloon touch the ground.” I never thought that I would become so passionate about this sport that it would have an impact on my character.

     The sport of volleyball was created by a man named William G. Morgan of Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1895. Morgan was a physical education teacher at the YMCA and called it "mintonette". It was an indoor or outdoor pastime that had characteristics of both handball and tennis. The first rules were written down by Morgan himself. He wrote that the game called for a 6 foot 6 inch net and a court of 25x50 feet. A match composed of 9 innings and 3 serves for each team in each inning. America’s baseball diamonds, soccer fields, hockey rinks, and basketball courts have never been so busy with children. The number of kids involved in an organized sport is not what is so groundbreaking. It’s the way in which children are playing or how their parents are arranging for them to play that may be cause for concern (Ferguson). Much controversy surrounds youth sports with the biggest disagreements coming over parental involvement and the intensity of play. Although there are many benefits for team participation, there is a growing fear that the negatives are starting to outweigh the positives.

Throughout my life, sports have always been my escape. If i’m mad about something that happened in school, I am able to go play sports and get lost in them. For me lacrosse is a huge deal. Something about it makes me so happy. I have so many accomplishments from starting Lacrosse that I am so grateful for. Lacrosse has made an impact on not just my life, but also my families. Throughout the years of playing lacrosse I have developed skills, friends, and memories that I wouldn’t trade for the world.

A person is capable of learning a skill if they put their time and effort towards what they feel passionate about. Has someone ever wanted to develop an ability that you practice it for hours a day? I did, I have spent around 100 hours a year trying to perfect my loving skill, volleyball. It was a hardworking skill, but enjoyable as well. It is my way of life. The most important years of my life was my volleyball experience in High School.

I felt like I could do anything. The moment was extremely surreal. I hadn’t accomplished anything so arduous in my life. The crowd’s cheers were thundering through my body.
