During the 1800s, Charles Dickens was one of the most acclaimed writers of his time. He did not just write books but he was a journalist, and play write. Many of his experiences and people in his life influenced his books. Because of this he was known as not just a writer but a writer for “the people”. He wrote about the workhouse, poverty, disabilities, social class, and so much more that effected his era.
As an author, many of his philosophies would show up in his text. Such as people should make the best of life and not the worst of it. We are able to see this through his character Oliver Twist, in this book we are shown an orphan boy who is living in the worst situation possible, he is claimed to be a murderer, he is sold off as an apprentice because he wanted another bowl of porridge and he got caught up with bandits. Yet by the end of the story we are shown that his life turned upside down and he made the best of the situations that he was put in and because of that he was able to be reunited with his grandfather and taken off of the streets. He’ll often show a character who might share that experience with him. Charles Dickens early on lived a difficult life. Living in poverty very early on he had experienced having to join the workhouse and earn 6 shilling to help support his family at the age of twelve because his father was imprisoned for debt. As soon as his father was released he was able to go back to school and learn again. Yet three years later at the age of fifteen he was pulled out of school so he can, once again help support his family because of the poverty that they were living in. Those experiences are what we are able to see through many of his well-loved characters such as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield and Philip
