It was just another sunny day in Hull, Iowa. My grandparents were sitting in their room at Pleasant Acres Care Center. They were just about to go to the dining room for supper, when all of a sudden they heard a loud BANG. At the time, my grandpa was sitting in his wheelchair; and my grandma was sitting in her wheelchair. They had just happened to wheel back a little bit. My grandma then opened her eyes and looked straight forward; and there was a pickup that had crashed into the nursing home, went through two walls, and was literately just touching the tip of her knee. It’s a good thing they moved back in their wheelchairs or my grandma would have been hit by the truck that crashed into the nursing home. These last couple of years my grandma
“The Palace” is located in the heart of the gables. It is one of the top notch awarded nursing home facilities for seniors stated by many families. Currently being an employee at this facility, I am learning the frightful stories of senior living. Even the Palace one of the most expensive, awarded senior living is actually a terrible place for the elderly. Especially, working at the Front Desk as the receptionist, I have seen firsthand how these poor seniors are forced into these haunted “luxurious” homes. The marble of the building has been often a misleading reason for placing their parent or grandparent in such terrible care. Most humans tend to judge by the appearance of the nursing homes rather than further investigating any violations that the facilities may have. From my own experience with my grandmother, I know it can be very difficult to take care of a senior citizen, especially when they suffer from various conditions and are just not safe in their home. Once adults become seniors, they require a lot of attention and assistance, which is hard when running a whole household and a career. But placing your loved one in one of these facilities can just shorten the amount of time they have to live. Also, it can be very expensive. Lastly, nursing home makes seniors feel the lack of freedom.
What effect do different stimulus, such as children and pets have on residents of nursing homes or assisted living facilities on their general health and wellness.
The delivery of Healthcare is a high touch enterprise that calls for interaction among every stakeholder within the healthcare sphere. Communication, whether interpersonal or intrapersonal, is a crucial part of these dealings and may be transformed by the intellectual use of communication tools. Information is the means of support of healthcare. Therefore, communication systems are the backbone that supports the whole idea. Care of patients in the nursing homes now almost unavoidably entails many different people, all with the need to share patient information and talk about their organization. As a result
The night of December 9, 2011 was easily one of the worst of my life. It all started before I woke. At around 2:30 in the morning, my grandfather (Pepaw), who resided in Keyser, West Virginia, had fallen very ill. My step grandmother called my father to let him know that his father needed emergency surgery and asked him to travel to Keyser Hospital as soon as possible. After the first surgery was completed the doctors at the the Hospital determined that he needed an additional emergency surgery that they were not equipped to preform. At 5:30 A.M. he was Medevaced to Morgantown, West Virginia for the next surgery. After he arrived, the Morgantown Physicians assessed his vitals, and in consultation with the Keysers doctors, they determined that Pepaw was not strong enough to undergo the second
The character Dorothy said in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, “there is no place like home” (Baum, 1960, p. 45). Sadly, many of our elderly live in Long Term Care Facilities (LTCF). The transition from living in their own homes, to living in a LTCF, can be a traumatic experience. Poor adaptation to a LTCF may cause depression, malnutrition and significantly reduce the lifespan of the elder. Thus, it is imperative, that nurse’s recognize this promptly.
FYI! This morning Kathy informed me that her father was not doing well. She told me a couple of days ago he had a fall at the assisted living facility that he and mother are in over in Taylor. Kathy told me that they took him by ambulance to the Scott & White hospital in Taylor.
There is a lot of retention in nursing homes. According to the article “The Importance of Supervision in Retention of CNAs” by Choi, JiSun and Johantgen, Meg, the average annual turnover rate in nursing homes is 74.5% for CNAs. The article states CNA annual turnover was as high as 121% in some states. This article reminds the reader that the retention in our nursing homes are high and is something that needs to be addressed. It affects Centerville Specialty Care residents and staff and we need to create ways to lower the turnover in our home.
With over 1.5 million elderly and dependent adults now living in nursing homes throughout the country, abuse and neglect has become a widespread problem. Even though some nursing homes provide good care, many are subjecting helpless residents to needless suffering and death. Most residents in nursing homes are dependent on the staff for most or all their needs such as food, water, medicine, toileting, grooming- almost all their daily care. Unfortunately, many residents in nursing homes today are starved, dehydrated, over-medicated, and suffer painful pressure sores. They are often isolated, ignored and deprived of social contact and stimulation. Because of insufficient and poorly trained staff commonly found in
As individuals age, numerous decisions must be made. A person, in conjunction with their loved ones, will need to address matters such as where they will live, how long term care will be paid for (if needed) and who will receive which assets upon their passing. When making medical decisions, one thing that individuals need to keep in mind is their home may need to be sold if they wish to qualify for medicaid. Anyone in need of advice on Medicaid, who qualifies and what assets may be retained while still qualifying should contact a Southington CT Medicaid Planning Attorney.
As the healthcare system in this country has changed, so have traditional nursing homes. Families have the right to expect that their loved ones will be taken care of by professionals in a caring environment. Unfortunately, may people are being abused and neglected in nursing homes. It is very clear that abuse is a serious problem among nursing home patients, and something needs to be done to put a stop to it.
Although it does not usually make news headlines and is rarely discussed, nursing home residents and the elderly experience abuse sometimes on a daily basis. Medical errors, physical abuse, or stealing from them could all be classified as abuse. All around the world today, a population that is not able to help itself is being harmed, whether it is physical or sexual abuse, exploitation, or not being properly supervised; the elderly and nursing home residents are being abused.
Long-term care can be defined as a broad set of paid and unpaid services for people who are mentally or physically disabled, or whose chronic illness places them in need of medical or personal assistance for long periods of time. “It is estimated that there are more than twelve million Americans of all ages whose mix of serious disability and chronic illness places them at the high risk for functional decline, hospitalization, or nursing home placement.” (Benjamin) Several different populations require long-term care services, and the needs of these populations vary. In addition to the elderly, many of the long-term care users are younger persons with physical disabilities; persons with developmental disabilities; and persons with chronic
One morning bright and early, I went to the nursing home near my home to do a community service project. The plan was for me to meet Ms. Clara Mae who is a resident there. My expectations for the day were not the best, I dreaded the smell of being in a nursing home. As I approached room 406, I noticed a faint lemon smell that floated around the hall. I cautiously tapped on her wooden door and noticed a festive, fall wreath hanging crookedly by her mailbox. “Ms. Clara Mae?” A small tinkling voice called out, “Come in!” As I entered her room, I noticed lemon yellow curtains hanging in the window with a yellow and white quilt on her bed with butterflies stitched on it. At first, I did not see her. She
Just the mere mention of “nursing home” causes most people to shudder and think, “I would never put my relative in such a ghastly place.” There are a great deal of horror stories that stem from nursing homes, most along the lines of , “ My mother was neglected after I put her in a nursing home. I would go to visit her and she would be lying in urine and have a new bruise, different than the one that was there last time.” There seems to be this popular perception that nursing homes are places where aging people go to wait out their final days and die; this causes many individuals to shun them. People are too caught up on these negative stories they
It was the first Sunday of December morning when my father asked me to take some boxes to the basement, I had never been down there, as a kid I always thought it was scary, but know as a 19-year-old guy, how could I say no. I went downstairs with a couple of boxes, but could not find any place to put them. The area was a mess, so I decided that I would organize every box that was there. While I was organizing, I notice this one box hidden in the back, so, I decided to open it. Inside the box, there was a newspaper and a couple of burnt pictures. Therefore, I decided to read the article, I could not understand much, it was an 18 years old newspaper, but it talked about a burning house with two twin babies, It said that one had been saved with no harm while the other one was rescued later on with severe burn mark. It was a miracle that other baby had survived, they called him miracle Carlos, and his brother Richard. I stood there for a second before my brain processed
