Training (Brian, Ernie, & Jay) During my career, I had an additional responsibility of training new drivers coming out of training schools. This additional training was nothing more than an indoctrination to that particular company's method of doing things. There really isn't a lot of difference company to company. The company where I was employed put me through their trainer course, and certified me as a trainer when the course was completed. I enjoyed this part of my career, and it can be difficult at times, but is still rewarding. Let's start with student #1! Student #1 was a young man, not too long out of military service. He was very personable, hard-headed at first, but then he decided that he was going to learn and he did. You see, the company provided me with their Training Manual, and I was supposed to adhere to it and its schedule of tasks to be completed. Lansing, MI, and got caught inone of those patented Missouri ice storms. He was scared to death and didn't want to drive on the ice. I explained that he is required to drive 80 % of the miles that the truck is dispatched on. Still he was scared, so I started driving in his place. We only got so far when we discovered that the road ahead was closed. We couldn't exit the highway, and we couldn't cross over the middle and go back where we came from. He asked what we were going to do, and I said " go to bed ", and explained why. My experience taught me that in situations like this one, the road will be closed and when it re-opened, law enforcement would let everyone know that we can continue on. We were completely stopped, and in the right hand lane where we were supposed to be. Nothing was moving in either direction. So, we just sat there for several hours before we were told we could
