While I nervously explained why I was passing fliers in their neighborhood, I noticed straightaway the five young men’s Spanish worded tattoos running across their faces, chests, and arms. All signs unexpectedly indicated that I was not only standing in the company of members from the MS-13 gang notorious for committing some of the most ruthless crimes in North and Central America, but also conversing with them about soccer and life. As my attempt of establishing rapport continued, it proved difficult not to think of their reputation of recruiting teenagers as young as thirteen years of age, ironically the same teenagers that my church and I were trying to save. Regarding that confrontation, and the similar ones that followed over the seven …show more content…
For close to six months I had the privilege of shadowing Dr. Chu at a family medicine clinic where the majority of her patients were Hispanic. During that time, she became a mentor, as well as an exceptional role model of someone who showed genuine compassion to individuals not being able to afford health care treatments regularly. Beyond extending payment due dates and exuding concern and affection for patients’ families, she showed a level of commitment regarding cultural competence that resonates with me to this day. With her warm personality and fluency of the Spanish language I would repeatedly see noticeably reserved and apprehensive first time Hispanic patients become shocked and relieved to hear their doctor speak in their native tongue. By simply learning to speak their language I witnessed how a doctor can use medicine and cultural competence to help others in a more personalized way and further develop a greater level of trust. It is this same level of commitment and personalized care that I strive to use day in and day out while currently working as a EMT. Whether by smiling, bandaging, and telling a young person suffering from a sports-related head laceration injury that everything will be alright or simply transporting an elderly patient and holding their hand after a fall, I am certain that my efforts as a EMT are teaching me something new each day regarding
On 08/04/16 at 8:42pm, I was dispatched to 2087 S. Hamilton Rd, on a injury dangerous or vicious dog/injured dog, serious injury, involving a Columbus Police Officer (CPD) being bit by a dog and shooting dog. I arrived at the location. I was advised my CPD personnel that the CPD Officer that was bite was transported to the hospital and that the dog was still breathing. I was escorted to the area where the dog was. The dog was on the ground, next to the dog was dog owner Jackie Fate. I was unable to see any visible injuries to the dog, the dog had shallow breathing. I asked Ms. Fate to wrap the leash around the dog’s mouth to prevent the dog from biting her or me while I placed the dog on the stretcher. Ms. Fate complied, I slowly guided the dog on the
I was raised in an agricultural area surrounded by people from many countries including Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. I learned about the hometowns and traditional foods they love, the economic and social benefits of working in the US, and the hardships they experience leaving family behind for years at a time. When I moved to China at 21 I learned how difficult it is to navigate life in a new country where you don’t speak the language well enough even to ask for the help. Now, working with Spanish-speaking patients in a primary care practice, I see the great challenges they can face obtaining high-quality healthcare. Many are unversed in the intricacies of our healthcare system and are burdened by the added stress of language and cultural
I did not meet with Pt. , I was paged by Lisa Micciulla, front desk in the emergency room to please come to the ED concerning an "urgent" situation regarding this Pt. When I arrived in the ED registration area an MGH Security personnel stopped me to talk with Pt's daughter, Charlene McDonald. Pt's daughter explained she was not being allowed to see her father, who she understands was brought to MGH for surgery after a fall. Explained to Ms. McDonald, I was aware of Pt having a gaurdian, and that there was a court ordered visitation schedule between Ms. McDonald and Pt. She reported this was an extreme situation and she showed me text messages she had sent to Pt's guardian, Attorney Tine Hajjar. I advised I could not allow Ms. McDonald access to Pt. Based on the order from probate court. Ms. McDonald has visits with Pt on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday 11:00 a.m. -4:00 p.m.
I am writing a personal narrative essay. In this essay I will talk about how my family has been such a motivator for me to want to go to college. My family and I have went through some hardships so I’m going to college to help them out. I’ll also discuss my roles in my important spaces like me being a captain on the basketball team, being a peer mentor for my high school, and many other roles I play. I will touch on the topic of how my hometown has had such an impact on me.
As an only child, my family has always strived for the best. My mother and father being divorced, both, have invariably talked to me about the type of future I should aim for. They have also pushed me to do my absolute best, and have encouraged me to continue school. But I had not given much thought to what I wanted to study for in the future, until one day it hit me. This was the day my grandmother was having hip surgery. So my father and I decided to go to the hospital to visit her. While we were waiting to see her, a nurse came by to talk to us about her recovery. The nurse was dressed in cool scrubs, and I couldn’t help but ask a few questions about how she likes her job. She began to tell me how much she loves her career as a Registered
School was never truly something that was extremely hard for me. I have maintained at a minimum, a 3.0 GPA or higher since 4th grade. I have had a few struggling points in school, but everyone has those moments; no one is perfect, but everyone has that one point in time, whether it is school related or even in everyday life.

When I woke up that Tuesday morning in 7th grade, I thought it would be like any other day, until my head started excruciatingly pounding. Even worse, it didn’t go away. Something was wrong.
My wife Erin and I started dating around April 2010, and things were going so well. I thought this could be the one I would spend the rest of my life with. We had lots of things in common but there was always something holding us back so eventually I grew tired of the constant blow offs and not wanting to make plans to get together and go out so I broke things off with her. She knew I was wrong but I thought I was in the right when I broke things off with her, was I so wrong and she has not let me forget it.
At the start of my life, I lived among my mother, father, and my older sister in Oklahoma. Shortly after I was born, my father got the opportunity to move to Texas to further his work. We moved when I was only four and began a new life in a small apartment just off of I-45. I attended a Christian elementary school, which made us wear fitted uniforms, and made my first few friends.
Throughout my life I have had highs and lows. Two years ago, my family moved a couple houses down from the house we were renting previously right in Madison. Life is full of changes and this move was a big change in my life. I was ready for this change even though it was unexpected because I knew it was bound to happen some day.
I grew up in a christian house hold all my life, I went to church twice a week and that's not counting bible studies. I go baptized when I was six and then we moved to florida, And then we started having family problems. I don't think I took my relationship with God seriously until a couple years ago.
When I was 6 years old I moved to Santa Maria California and that was one of the biggest changes for me. I was born and raised and a small town called San Juan Pinas in Mexico for 5 years. My family comes from a very poor town and I was taught to value every single thing that was given to me. Coming here was something new to me and very different from where I come from. The culture where I come from was very strict and my family expected a lot form me. I had to adjust the culture, the language, and the big city. I entered in first grade in the middle of the school year in 2005. Learning English was a very difficult language for me since it was my third language. My first language was mixteco, an indigenous language, then I learned some little
In 2012, my family moved to Boston from Los Angeles. I was nine years old, and the idea of “new” was scary to me because I had gone to the same school, with the same people, in the same setting for my whole life. Despite the welcoming feeling from Park, I wasn’t as happy as I could have been. As school and life went on I did not feel motivated to meet new people, play new sports, or learn new things. Luckily, this fixed mindset transformed.
It was finally Thursday and I couldn’t help but think that the next day was Friday. I was so excited for Friday because Jessica was having a huge party and my sister and I got invited. I couldn’t even sleep Thursday night because of the excitement running through my veins. It was finally Friday I woke up and went and jumped on my sister’s bed and told her to wake up because we had stuff to get done. We had to get new outfits for the party and get our nails done. Since Jessica is popular we thought we should go all out for the party. It was getting to be closer to the party and we went and got drinks. My sister is 21 so she is able to buy alcohol. We got many different types of alcohol like Mikes Hard, Kinky, and Smirnoff Screw Drivers. It was
