The purpose of this letter is to request to be considered for the student leader position of RESIDENT ADVISOR ROLE (RA) during the 2018-2019 school year. I strongly believe my commitment to personal growth and the multiple skills I have acquired through the different programs I have attended through the years combined with my diversity from being half European and half American, will make me a great candidate to impact the lives of my peers at the Residence Hall in a very positive manner. As a student with a Spanish Mom (from Madrid, Spain) and a Norwegian Dad (from Oslo, Norway) living in the United States and spending months at a time with my grandparents in Europe, I have strongly understood the need of diversity in our global daily life, and I have acquired the skills such diversity provides such as having and using an open mind, conflict resolution, problem solving and many other skills which come from understanding, …show more content…
and Civil Air Patrol, have taught me during four years the values of Honor and Commitment and I now aim at living with the highest level of integrity and civic responsibility in everything I do, all while respecting not just other people but all forms of life including my own body for safe and healthy long-lasting living. Both these programs have taught me leadership to a great extent by learning first how to follow rules and by being accountable at all times. I have been swimming and competing since I was four years old being part of the Bend Swim Club (Bend, Oregon) and a Varsity swimmer during my four years at Mountain View High School. I know I would not have become a First Class Swimmer in the Navy program mentioned above and a Top Five Swimmer in the State of Oregon during two consecutive years, had it not been for the team building skills , dedication, time management, and accountability my coaches and superiors demanded and expected of me on a regular
As a DC-CAP College Representative I will advocate on campus centered on the relationship I have established with Housing and Residence Life throughout the years. Currently, I am a Resident Advisor (RA) and a member of Residence Hall Association (RHA) both concerning housing. My role as an RA is to foster the community, provide academic support, being attentive to safety and security of the residents, and to serve as an overall counselor to the residents. Also, as an RA I develop programs that educate and encourage residents to build relationships. Furthermore, as a member of RHA my role is to develop residence hall policies, programs, and be the voice for all residence hall students and address the concerns of all the residents.
When I first joined the North Attleboro Swim Team my freshman year of high school, I did not know what to expect. Prior to joining, I had never swam on a team before so it was a whole new experience to me. As the first week of swim started, I was apprehensive if I wanted to continue since I was not on the same caliber as my other teammates were. The practices were brutal but extremely rewarding, as I strived to prove myself and to my coaches. As my freshman season was under way, a couple of upperclassmen took
The information that I have learned about diversity in the United States of America has helped me better understand and relate to others in many ways. The United States of America is a giant melting pot of several different races, ethnicities, and cultures. What I have learned is that each group has their differences and similarities. With these differences in culture they have taught me how to be tolerant and accepting of them no matter how different from me they appear. By accepting the differences in our diverse society I have learned new thoughts and ideas of living, different perspectives of thinking, and have been introduced to a variety of foods that I have never tried before. All in all, it seems in
The Royal Canadian Air Cadets is an example of a community activity that I have actively taken many leadership roles in. Having served the Royal Canadian Air Cadets for more than four years with the 540 Golden Hawks Squadron, I partake in various activities. I have also learned numerous invaluable life and work skills such as teamwork, leadership and confidence, all of which are not spoon-fed to us, but rather acquired from the experiences that I have been through with cadets. We are constantly coached and supervised by Officers who encourage us to lead others. As we age and climb up the ranks, we are encountered with many leadership opportunities that we are strongly encouraged to take.
I am applying to be a Resident Advisor to be able to get the opportunity to be apart of the East Carolina welcoming committee for new students moving in. I want to help make sure that the students staying in the dorms are safe and comfortable with their living arrangements. As a freshman, I know that living away from home and starting college can be tough. I want to be able to create a home away from home for them to feel comfortable in. I communicate effectively, I am approachable, and a leader. These qualities I say best describe me as a person. By having great communication skills it will help me as an RA to effectively communicate to people that live in the dorms about rules and regulations. Also by having great communication skills, I
Basic and advanced individual training pushed me to give my all in everything I do. The ability to serve my country and travel made me proud. When I was direct commission as a physician assistant in the National Guard it thrust me into a leadership role that I was not trained for, but my life experiences to this point helped me on this path. Training soldiers and maintaining battalion medical readiness was the core of my duties. Amongst the most valuable attributes I developed while serving was time management, extensive preparation and
Since submitting the original application, I have discovered ways to put myself forward in the campus, to understand that some events are helping me to pursue a positive foundation and ways to contribute to UW-Madison. At this moment, I am a part of Residence Life, ensuring a positive atmosphere to the fellow students around me. Within Residence Life, I hold a position in Core Team and Leadership Team in my hall. With my past experiences of role modeling, I felt this position would be great to direct residents to become involved and assure them that opportunities for them are there for
Diversity helps people learn about other ways of life and what goes on in other places of the world. It
I have been part of the varsity swim team for four years now, which I am now a captain of it, reached cadet chief master sergeant in Civil Air Patrol, where I soloed a plane, and other; however, these two accomplishments are the foundations of my goals.
As I mentioned before swimmers aren’t based on their ability to master the techniques but also in the values they posses. The values they posses are respect, honesty, fairness and courage. I had to learn and use those values everyday I went to swimming practice. There’s one thing that I needed to have to become part of the discourse community, which was being passionate about swimming and not giving up. At the beginning it was really hard for me not to give up when I was exhausted, but after becoming more passionate for swimming I never gave up. There were moments when I thought of giving up, but I knew that if I really wanted to call my self a swimmer I shouldn’t give up and I didn’t. For example, once I was in a Swimming Festival in my High School where I competed the four different strokes. I always finished second in the 50-meter freestyle race, but that day I decided I would end up first place. The race started and I jumped into the water and started pacing my self so that I would finish strong. In the first 25-meters we were all tied up and I was starting to feel tired. But I knew I couldn’t give up, so I took a deep breath and pushed harder. I pushed harder and was able to win the first place. After this race, I realized that even though I felt like giving up, something inside me was telling me to push harder and that thought led me to success. I was able to
This was significant in my leadership skill since I was made a platoon sergeant and became responsible for sixteen students and everything that they needed to complete. I was liable for their whereabouts and the many things that they needed to learn in order to be promoted. Also I had to make sure that they were ready to march for the District Inspection and Fiestas Patrias Parade. In order to represent the school well. Which took a lot of work and dedication, but when they were able to comprehend what they were being taught it made it easier. And when it was time for them to stand in the inspection and do everything that they were taught correctly it made it all worthwhile to be their platoon sergeant. Being a part of ROTC taught me service when I participated in the Fiestas Patrias Parade. Since it made me dedicate an entire day to being in the parade and making sure that I did my part to represent my school the right way. As well as, build my character since I had to keep my integrity in tact by following through with being loyal to my school, and exert my good behavior to show my school is great.
Diversity is an ongoing discussion in day-to-day life. Not many situations occur without diversity having a role. There are a multitude of topics that introduces or involves diversity, to include age, sex, race, gender, ethnicity and so on. Prior to participating in this Diversity Awareness class, I’ve always thought diversity was more geared around discrimination and racism. Through weekly readings and discussions, I have discovered that diversity is much broader than that. There are many countries that are mixed culturally
’m writing this cover letter to inform you that I am extremely interesting of being part of your Residential Assistant Program for the coming 2016 Fall semester. I first heard of the program when moving into my first year as a college student I was lost and unaware of where certain things were located throughout the building by reaching out to my RA for help I came to encounter what a RA position was and what were their obligations as an RA. Knowing the commitment, dedication and self management that it takes to become an RA I would say I am ready to take on the hands on experience with open arms making me not just an interested candidate but a prepare fully aware candidate.
I learned the keys to recognizing and working around cultural differences at a very young age and it is this that helps me navigate the myriad differences I encounter among people and nationalities. It is a thin line to walk – to determine where cultural differences bring colour to life and where they limit growth and progress – and that is why my open mindedness matters to me most: it is a constant debate and one that keeps me focused on both people and purpose in every
Diversity has broad ranges of spectrums. Students from all across the continent; students from political refugees, indigenous Americans, and immigrants bring their culture and linguistic skills to American classrooms. Students do not only bring their cultures and linguistic skills, but they bring their ethnics, talents, and skills. In addition, their age and gender are two
