Sex Trafficking: A Forced Slave Trade
I want to talk about a girl named Danielle. She likes swimming, SpongeBob, Mexican food, writing poetry, getting her nails painted, and Harry Potter books. Sometimes she’s moody; but mostly she is open and eager to be loved. When she smiles, huge dimples crease her chubby face and they are capable of melting hearts. She’s much like any other 11-year-old girl in America, except for one critical difference. Over the past year of her life, she has been trafficked up and down the East Coast by a 29-year-old pimp; and sold nightly on Craigslist to adult men who ignore her dimples and baby fat and purchase her for sex. Sadly, Danielle is one of many faceless victims who are all over the world (Lloyd 1). In order to end this modern day slave trade known as sex trafficking we must educate ourselves on the topic and actively get involved in the efforts to end trafficking.
Human trafficking is the forcing of people into being transported within or to another country for purposes of exploitation. Seventy-Nine percent of people trafficked are used in the sex trade. Unfortunately, trafficking isn’t just an international issue. An easy way is to Google “sex trafficking.” This will provide websites like Rescue and Restore Kentucky, which has tons of educational videos on topics ranging from “what is trafficking” to “how to help.” The Polaris Project is another website that provides information on trafficking and how to get involved in ending it. Another way to get educated is to take a class. The University of Louisville has an entire class on human trafficking and many other schools are following suit (Wave 3). The information is out there.
