Life After High School
In many public schools around the nation, students feel as if they are not prepared for the real world in high school. They believe they need less Calculus and more money management or other class that will be needed once out in the real world. Many kids feels as when they graduate they are just dumped out into the real world and know nothing about how to do the everyday tasks that are necessary to be a successful human being. From the info in this essay, you will hopefully see the school board needs to implement classes such as; Money Management, Taxes and Investing, and Child Development into the curriculum.
The first point that needs to be addressed is the Money Management class. Everyone struggles with managing their money, so why not make it easier on our youth coming out of high school and teach them the need to knows of managing and budgeting money effectively. In this class students could learn how to take their paychecks once they get a job and be able to figure their monthly expenses and how much they need to set aside for bills. The problem with most people is they get their paycheck and begin buying that new phone or things they want and disregard the fact that they need to be saving their

Taxes are something that everyone will have to do in their lives and most children coming out of high school have no idea how to do their taxes. It is crazy that these everyday skills are not taught in the 12 or more years these children are in school. Investing is another thing that students should learn. Investing is a great thing but it can also be a terrible thing. This being the case, we need to teach our youth not only how to invest but how to invest the right way. Many people nowadays don't know the many ways you can invest and also how to tell if something is a good investment or not. In this course students would learn the correct way to file taxes and invest their
Likewise, high school does not teach students the critical life skills in which needed to use for the rest of their lives. For example, graduates are expected to know how to manage money, negotiate, and how to communicate effectively. However, the problem is they were never taught these direct skills. Instead, they had been taught how to memorize information that would be needed for a one time test. Additionally, when these graduates reach the workforce and are expected to
The twelve years you spend of your life going to school, is about learning new things and preparing yourself for the real world. Towards the last four years of school, you start thinking about what you want to do after high school, you start taking classes that’s required for what you want to go into, looking at colleges where you can get your degree. College isn’t for everyone right after their done with High School. Other people don’t need college for what they’re going to do, they can just start there job right away. Some people that have no idea what they want to do might consider going into the military, then find something in any of the fields.
The main courses that we are taught throughout elementary and high school are English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. While those subjects are important, not everyone will use those studies throughout their lifetime, whereas if they taught subjects like balancing a checkbook, how to fill out job applications and write a resume, how to do an interview, first aid, and so many other skills, everyone would carry that with them and find that information useful after they get out of high school.
"The United States are ranked well behind Chinese and Australian students in financial literacy, and new research shows over sixty percent of American teens don't know how to approach basic financial problems" (Shepard). There are many beneficial reasons why personal finance should be required in high school a few of which are: young adults are lacking the basics, there isn't any personal finance being taught in the classroom, it's a part of our everyday life, and Americas debt lies in our future. The lack of personal finance being taught in the classroom is a major concern in the United States. One of the most critical reasons why personal finance should be taught in the classroom is because young adults are illiterate about personal finance.
The main thing this school would focus on in our students is a career based education. Having this kind of education would benefit greatly because once they finish school, they will know what they want to do and how to do it. According to The Lincoln Journal Star, people and different organizations are starting to agree that offering a student's education based on what they want their career to be will be successful (Reist, 2012). This just proves that having this kind of education would be beneficial! Another reason my school would have this is because the students would be in classes with fellow students who share that career interests. By doing this it will help the students get used to working with the kinds of people they might work with after school. Symonds from the Lincoln Journal Star said, “This isn’t a call for radical reform, it’s a call for a common-sense reform” (Reist,
In conclusion, schools should offer more shop classes that provides students with basic skills and not just courses in technology and courses that prepare them for college. Schools should prepare students for what they want to do after they graduate and not assume that all students will go into the technology field or attend college. The problem of this is that kids lack basic skills and in order to get rid of that is to give effort of providing them with shop classes, and letting them find their skills and talents. Without the shop classes students that do not continue on with college will lack skills that are needed to find work and make a living and will eventually will end up being a burden in society and when they end up not being able
It was an warm sunny day I was dabbing it ,four boys were strolling down woods street. There four boys names were Mac,dope boy ,devin and Shaddy. Devin was the smartest one out of all of them hood boys, the rest was the same.Devin was ready to start his own business selling shoes.Dope boy,Mac and Shaddy were going on the wrong path selling drugs, robbing and beating up people. Devin would hang around with them often and conversed with them, but he would not do any bad things. Mac has been a dad already, he had to take care of his 2 year old. Dope boy had an older brother, but, he go shoot a couple weeks ago. Dope boy was reckless, everyone was scared of him even his own mother feared for his life .Shaddy was the slickest one out of all of then, he would get away with everything he did.Shaddy was a only child ,no mother, no father living with his grandparents and living in the worst part of town.
The student could then choose to take the general version of that class or an advance version. An option akin to this is already used in high school but this could also be implemented in middle school as well. These classes should form connections to the real world, keep students entertained , as well as get them engaged. Another issue that I identified is that a large part of the standards that students must learn, prepare us to take a final exam and not for the real-world; moreover, the teaching of pupils revolves around pushing from one grade to the next, building upon information that most students will not find useful. In conclusion, it makes more sense for the information that is statistically found in everyday lives the most to be built upon. There are more issues within the school system that I would like to discuss, but I will leave you with this for
Students in today's classroom are not focused in class as they should be. Some reasons involve technology, but a big factor is what they are learning is simply boring. If the school system focused more on subjects teens could relate to, school participation would greatly increase.
Students today face many challenges that we did not encounter in our adolescence. One of the biggest challenges they face is the need for them to evolve into capable civic members in a ever changing and far more complex world than the one we grew up in. Their futures and that of our communities depend on their education. Cutting things like smaller student to teacher ratios, full day kindergarten, and alternative programs for at risk high school students can only lead to 1st graders that are under prepared, overworked teachers, and lower high school graduate percentages for the state of
According the most recent national assessment recorded in the Washington post, “the nations high school seniors have shown no improvement in math and reading performances since 2009.” In the most recent years, education has taken a huge downfall. Since 2010, over 45% of students drop out. Many students have problems with the grading system, so many different testing programs and having to follow a set of rules and not expand on those rules. The education system needs to induce more creativity, enforce the ways on how education is important and elaborate more on the rules of grading.
Everything is a work in progress; nothing is perfect or finished, and there is always room for improvement. Technology can always be upgraded, the school system can be enhanced, disrespectful individuals can always ameliorate, lousy actions or issues can always be changed, and ignorance can be turned to knowledge. Currently, individuals are leaving school unaware of how to perform the tasks that await them outside of their parents care. Schools are not preparing students to live self-sufficiently once leaving high school. In order to resolve such issue, schools should require a standardized test on essential household tasks, a mandatory home economics class, and visuals that promote the importance of knowing how to do everyday tasks.
I’ve just entered my senior year of high school. I know that this is a very important year. I have a lot of decisions to make and not much time to make them. These decisions will either make or break my life, and I want to make sure that I make them to the best of my ability because there is no turning back. I need to make sure I definitely want to attend college. The decision is totally up to me. There are many positives and negatives of attending college. Go over them, and then decide. I know myself better then anyone else, and I won’t let anyone else tell me what to do. I will make sure if I am going to attend college that I have something in mind that I will want to do, to succeed in. Choosing a major can be a
Notably, school requires classes that need to be complete in order to fulfill the general education standards. While I think some classes such as English and math are essential, I do not think classes that are deemed useful in the future are necessary. From personal experience, a required course that I needed to take for high school graduation was Algebra 2. However, I’m aware that other schools does not Algebra 2 and plus it can be taken in college. In addition, it is unlikely that someone is going to use any form of algebra in his or her life unless they have a profession that incorporates it such as being a scientist or an engineer. Another course that can be said for the same reason are foreign language class. In some states, such as California, a foreign language like Spanish would be useful since a significant of the population speaks it. In all honesty, I think that foreign language classes should be optional rather than mandatory.
It’s the end, high school is finally over. It’s finally graduation day, and a wave of emotion hit, and I’ve never been hit with a wave quite this hard, not even at the beach. I’m not the type to get sad, but as I walk around in my long draping gown, my cap the doesn’t quite fit because of my abnormally large head, and my state championship ring I can’t help but be overwhelmed with emotion. Being the guy that I am I ignore it as always and I continue going around to teachers and give them hugs, thanking them for the help they’ve given me. Watching everyone take pictures, crying, talking about their futures, and how “they’ll have to meet up sometime” as if they’re moving to another country when they are just really moving to the next town over. I swore the day before, the week before, even months before I would be sad, and wouldn’t know what to do with myself when today actually comes, but I can’t seem to find the emotions. All of them are on the inside and won’t come out. On the inside I feel sad, and upset and I want to just hug everyone and cry, but I can’t. I don’t have time to think about crying, because of all the chaos going on around me. We only got one practice in ahead of time, just about nobody actually listened to what we are supposed to be doing, so everyone’s doing their own thing. I walk through the halls and realize this is my final last. I’ve had my last soccer game, I’ve attended my last football game and cheered them onto another loss, and now in
