‘How may conflict resolution and conflict management approaches be applied in educational settings?’
Abstract
This assignment will review the nature of conflict, from psychologist theories to what form it takes in an educational setting. In order to apply conflict resolution and conflict management effectively in an educational setting, it is important to understand the background disciplines of conflict and theories behind how humans behave in social settings. Comprehending how human behaviour initiates is the key stepping stone to resolving and managing conflict behaviour between humans. We will examine what the concept of conflict is and what

According to Plon, it did not appear in psychological works and literature until 1958, “and even there it is important to notice it arrives on stage timidly” (Plon, 1974, p391). The study of conflict within human relations became popular after the second world war and the “last moments of the cold war”
(Plon, 1974, p391), possibly due to psychologists attempting to study the cause of such wars and how humans can behave in such conflicts against others. Darwin, Marx and Freud dominated the study of human behaviour in the early years of psychology, including some work which may link slightly to causations of conflict (Deutsch et al., 2006 p13). The main feature of their studies in relation to human behaviour and conflict was based on “competitive struggle” (Deutsch et al., 2006). Darwin believed all humans struggle in order to exist, and those who are the strongest – survive: “survival of the fittest” (Deutsch et al., 2006, p13). Social Darwinism denotes early theories compiled together and attempted to provide reason behind conflicts such as racism, war, sexism and class superiority (Deutsch et al., 2006, p14.). Again their studies were based on the concepts of human struggles, not solely on conflict as we know have it defined in this review. Marx work on struggle stressed that there are different divisions in society according to classes and this creates conflict. Freud
In the novel Prisoner B-3087 by: Alan Gratz, the author uses conflict to develop the theme. Prisoner B-3087 is a book about a Jewish boy named Yanek that lived during World War II and the Holocaust. Yanek was unfortionally, taken by the Nazi’s to a concentration camp for six years. Between 10 concentration camps Yanek finally got freed from the camps and the American soldiers reached him and gave him food, water, clothing and shelter. Yanek then, found a family to stay with and lived on with his life. In the book the author uses conflict to develop the theme sometimes you have to conform to survive by the quote “To suffer quietly hurt only you. Suffer loudly, violently, angrily- to fight back- was to bring hurt and pain and death to others” (112). This quote proves how the author uses conflict to develop the theme
In an attempt to explain the process of conflict and its concepts, this paper will review the movie “Temptation.” In spirit, this paper will identify three major conflicts within the movie, as it relates to conflict resolution. In order to grasp a true concept and analyse this movie, the term conflict may be defined as “an expressed struggle between at least two interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference from others in achieving their goals” (Wilmot & Hocker, 2011, p11).
Conflict is one of many challenges in everyday life. It is presented to us in many ways such as trying to figure out how to get your homework done on time, finding a way to win the football game, or something just as simple as trying to get out of doing your chores. However, there are times in everyone's life where your conflict is beyond the norm. These could include standing up to your school bully, trying to save someone’s life, or as many would say the greatest conflict in human history, the Nazis rise to power. There are many ways to solve a conflict in general no matter how morally wrong it is. However, history has shown time and time again that the best way to solve a conflict is to stand up to it while also
Texts that deal with the theme of conflict make us think. Conflict is the centre of all dramatic development in the three texts I will be discussing. These are Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, and O Brother Where Art Thou’, directed by Joel Coen. There are many forms of conflict expressed in these texts. These include both emotional and physical conflict. Conflict has been brought about in many ways throughout these texts. Most of which has been fuelled by inner discord. However a person’s inner conflict can often lead to violent activity. This demonstrates that both forms of conflict are indeed affiliated.
Conflict theory is the second major school of thought in sociology. It is a macro-level type of approach to understand social interactions in social life, just like functionalism. A difference in conflict theory is that our society is viewed as always being in a constant struggle, unlike functionalism which theorizes that our society is stable. Conflict theory is a paradigm that sees social conflict as the basis of society and social change, and emphasizes a materialist view of society, a critical view of the status quo, and a dynamic model of historical change. Some sociologists may believe that if these tensions, stresses, and struggles never existed in our society people may be more driven to achieve greatness in education, or simply more motivated to set higher goals. Just like functionalism, the conflict theory viewed society on a macro sociological level, but the individual person in our society are having their lives shaped by the economy, control and power. The conflict perspective's main idea is that there are opposing interests

Conflict theory was formed by Karl Marx which spoke on how conflict theory works for those with wealth and power try to hold on to it by any means possible, chiefly by suppressing the poor and powerless.
Life is like a waterslide. There are twists and turns, and ups and downs. There are rough, choppy moments and smooth, polished moments. And there is always an end to the journey. Conflict can relate to a waterslide - with many twists and turns, ups and downs. But once resolved, conflicts always come to an end. In “The Most Dangerous Game”, by Richard Connell, Rainsford faces many types of conflict, including man versus nature, man versus man, and man versus self conflicts.
Staub’s psychological interpretation of conflict is that conflict in society is a result of individuals’ or groups’ expectations. In society, people have their own personal standard for themselves as well as the state they live in, known as relative deprivation. When standards are not met, there is opportunity for conflict. An important term that helps define conflict in the eye of Staub and Overcoming Evil is pseudo-transcendency. Pseudo-transcendency is the basic frustration that needs aren’t being me in society resulting in an individual to act out of self-interest, extreme beliefs, or violent, criminal activities (Staub, 2011). Sources of conflict are natural amongst people of opposing desires or needs. The psychological aspect of
There are many was that people experience conflict throughout their day. This can include conflict in the work place, at home, or even on video games. All these opportunities to collide with conflict can make it difficult to determine what type of conflict is occurring, and reach the best possible solution to the problem. There are certain cues that can be seen when dealing with realistic, and nonrealistic conflict. These include then end goals related to the conflict, flexibility, and the interests of the parties involved within the conflict. Also, the appropriate response to a non-realistic conflict is to use force or coercion to resolve the issue. First realistic conflict produces different cues from nonrealistic, and these can be used in determining the type of conflict that is being dealt with.

Conflict theories view society as
Contention is a normal part of a society, and there isn’t any simple way or formula that will predict its emergence, that will rely and depend upon different questions and circumstances, such as history, politics and tensions around them. (Tarrow, 1998: 19)
Whenever there is a difference of opinion there will also be a chance for some form of conflict to arise. To resolve and manage conflict, any organization or persons’ must try to understand the causes, theories, approaches and strategies of conflict management. Resolving conflict requires a great deal of attention and thorough understanding in seeking resolution. In this review, conflict management will be explored in general from different perspectives in light of how conflict effects teams or groups, workplace relationships and recommended strategies or styles that help to manage it.
Thomson and Kanaan (2003), propounded that the origin of Conflicts in human society date back to antiquity and studies into conflicts are manifested by the works of
