We must have tools and plans in place to make it on our own in case of a disaster happening. Just like having a functioning smoke detector in your house, having emergency supply kits will put tools that one may need at your feet. It is important to be prepared to use what you have on hand to make it on your own for at least three days, maybe even longer. There are six basic items that one should ensure if any disaster were to occur. These include: water, food, a first aid kit, clothing and bedding, tools and supplies, and special items. Any item that you may need when evacuating should be deposited in an easy-to-carry container such as backpack or a duffle

Each family member should learn how to use a fire extinguisher and should know where they are kept. It is crucial to steer clear of items that will burn including wood piles, lawn furniture, grills; move them outside or in an area away from your house.
Winter Storms
People are injured, even killed, in traffic accidents on icy roads or suffer from low body temperatures due to being cold for long periods of time; that is why winter storms are another common natural calamity in the United States. To prepare for a winter storm; you should add the following to your emergency kit: * Rock salt to melt ice on walkways * Sand to increase traction * Snow shovels and other equipment to eradicate snow * Heating fuel such as dehydrated, seasoned wood for your fire-place and wood burning stoves * Clothing and bedding such as blankets You should also create a family communications plan, listen to a weather radio or other local weather stations, and reduce travel, as well as bringing all pets inside during winter storms. Tropical Storms, Tornadoes, and Thunderstorms Tropical storms, tornadoes and thunderstorms may cause a significant deal of damage as well as creating dangerous weather conditions. Tropical storms bring harsh winds and severe flooding. Tornadoes can happen without warning; and thunderstorms can create dangerous lightning, which is one of the main explanations of weather-related deaths in the United States, each year. Begin preparing by building an
We have an Evacuation Bag which is taken out with us whenever we go outside of the premises or on off site visits/trips the contents of our evacuation bag include: First Aid Kit, Cold Compress, Accident Book, Individual child’s medication in own container, tissues, anti-bacterial hand gel, mobile phones, daily signing in/out sheets.
Hurricanes and tornadoes are both severe weather events that can potentially cause a great deal of damage to property. Both of these storms can threaten human life and in severe events with either a hurricane of a tornado there may well be a loss of life. They may be quite different in how they form and what they actually do but on the other hand those storms are both potentially devastating so they fall into the same category of potential severe weather danger. People who live in areas where hurricanes and tornadoes are known to appear during certain seasons of the year are always urged to be alert to weather warning systems. Those same residents know from experience to keep their radios tuned to weather emergency stations and they are in many cases prepared for the brunt of a storm by building basement shelters.
Collect the things you need for evacuation and if safe to do so turn off the gas, electricity and water supplies.
If they are fortunate enough to have a fireplace, ensure there is enough wood in the house at all times. You may not have time to bring in a large quantity once the weather hits.
Increased frequency and intensity of storms and weather extremes may increase safety and health risks for vulnerable populations including water ingress, mould and loss of housing for poorly housed and health risk to the homeless.
And if you have any pets try to look for hotels that accept pets. As stated in “How to be prepared for a hurricane” it says Make sure your vehicle is maintained. Check and replenish all fluids, replace the windshield wipers if possible, check your tire pressure, fill the gas tank and any reserve canisters. Remove any unnecessary external accessories, such as bike racks. Have a spare tire in good working order and lots more.if you evacuating u also want to know where and how you're going to get where you have to
In conclusion, if you know that a hurricane is coming you should prepare properly. Nations should come together to help each other. Individuals should have generators, fill their tubs up with water, and stock up on food. If you do not prepare properly, prepare
On their website FEMA makes recommendations to have basic supplies on hand in the case of an emergency with a list including batteries, first aid kits, a whistle, dust mask, cell phones etc. (FEMA.gov). This is just one of the many preparation responsibilities of the government. In the research journal, “Preparing For Disaster,” Peter Katel defines the citizens who take on major preparedness behaviors as “Preppers.” (Katel, p.671) Although the title “preppers” sometimes comes with a negative connotation rooted from “Doomsday Prepper,” the actions taken by these individual may be essential for our survival. Katel, quotes a man who shares the ideas of the so called “preppers”, saying “The economic disasters, big storms- the idea is to absorb the blow and try to recover” …. “By being self-reliant, you can get to the point where you’re resilient” (Katel, p. 671). Prior to Hurricane Sandy, we saw many attempts at “absorbing the blow,” which included stocking up on food, bottled water and gas for
In such horrendous events the American Red Cross volunteers from all areas of the country, even the local volunteers are able to help, in this area more than 70 disaster workers came to help, which consisted mainly of volunteers. Many people go through many hurricanes but in order to prepare for one people need to get supplies for it. Hurricanes come and different categories but there's only one to talk about, how to prepare for a category 5 hurricane. To prepare for a category 5 hurricane everyone would need to get at least 5 cases of water from any store near by like publix, winn dixie, or walmart, also get can foods like ravioli, or chicken noodle soup can foods are good for a hurricane because you can just heat them over a candle if your power goes out.
To begin with your preparation for this possibly catastrophic event, it is of gargantuan importance to stockpile upon supplies in order to cope with lack of supplies and the closing of stores when the hurricane is days from landing. Some items include, but are not limited to water, meat, bread, water, sanitizer, first aid kit, flashlight, and a radio (http://www.broward.org/Hurricane/About/Pages/HurricaneKitShoppingGuide.aspx, Hurricane Kit Shopping Guide). Along with getting those supplies, be sure to barricade your windows with cardboard, or simply put up storm shutters; use whatever you find is cost effective. Regardless of that, be sure to take shelter in a room that is not prone to glass breaking or the shattering of an object that may be dangerous to those around it. It is also essential to have gasoline, due to it’s many uses in helping your survival ( for car, generator, etc. ). Outside of your house, ensure that you have a drainage system for
In order to have a successful evacuation plan, begin preparing before the evacuation is even ordered. Identify several places to go stay at during an evacuation, such as a friend’s house or a hotel. Remember to take into account any pets because not all evacuation shelters and hotels will allow pets. It is also important to chose locations in different directions in case severe weather or gridlocked highways block the path to one’s destination (Evacuation). After setting up a few evacuation destinations, the next step is to assemble the supplies needed during the evacuation. One will want to put the following items in their evacuation kit: water, food, a battery-powered radio, extra batteries, a flashlight, a first aid kit, sleeping bags, clean clothes, and some cash (Build a kit). In the event of an emergency, families should keep a portable emergency kit in the car- if they own one- at all times.(Evacuation). Families who own a vehicle should, “keep a full tank of gas in it if an evacuation seems likely. Keep a half a tank of gas in it at all times in case of an unexpected need to evacuate,” (Evacuation). It is important to always have some gas in the car in case the gas stations are closed or unable to pump gas due to power outages (Evacuation). Prior to an evacuation, one must also prepare their house. This includes securing loose rain gutters, trimming trees, and purchasing a generator (Hurricanes). It also entails a
Luckily, there are many ways to prepare for hurricanes. First, collect a lot of water and save food because you can not drive to get food or water during the hurricane. Also, get foods that do not have to be heated in case the power goes out. If you
First of all, if the weatherman is telling you that we are going to get about 1,000 feet of snow where you live, you need a game plan. You could stay in your house, or get the heck out of there! If you are leaving also consider moving to Arizona or anywhere that is still hot when winter come. If you do plan to stay in your house, make sure you have everything. But I’ll talk about that later.
