Every day in our life we come across challenges. It becomes imperative that we find solutions to them. Some problems we need to face alone and some we need to encounter as a team. I worked in several teams all my professional life and I believe that any task can be easily completed when there is coordination between the members of the team. In this reflection paper I would like to present my views on the importance of defining roles, advantages of being with the same team, challenges in a diversified group and the significance of trusting team members.
Defining Roles
“Roles are positions in a group that have a set of expected behaviours attached to them“(John and Saks, 2011: Page 225 of quote). I feel that most of the problems in a

Another perspective I have about roles is that members can play various roles based on the situation. By that I mean that team members may not stick to same role always. For example, a person who was a team member can move into a facilitator role. The same person may have to follow someone when situation demands. But I feel that the core role of person should not always change as that would lead to ambiguity. For instance in the above example if a team member switches to a facilitator role temporarily then it would not be a problem. But if the roles keep changing back and forth, then that would create unnecessary confusion and eventually hurt the team.
Advantages of being on the same team
I feel comfortable working with the same team over and over again. The reason behind that is that once you get used to a team, it’s easy to understand each other’s thoughts and that would lead to better solutions. People might feel that same team might lead to redundancy in future but I feel that the more the team life span is the better the performance. I tried to challenge myself by working in a team which is completely new. I could see that many novel ideas popped up but there were lot of problems like lack of coordination, lack of trust, self centric behaviour etc. Resolving such problems would take some time and that means that I need to spend reasonable amount of time with the
One of the concept I noticed while I was at Boys & Girls Club was the statues and roles. Each staff member had their own important roles that they played part in at B&G Club but the same status; their status was B&G club staff member. For example, Joe status was a staff member but a higher advanced one; Joe was the manager of the club. He had more important roles then the other staff members. Joe made sure everything was going in order. Another staff member is Jeff. Jeff’s role is less demanding. He just helps around Joe and make sure the kids are behaving. Each staff member had a different role they played. Either it was the manager. helping recreations, or small groups, they each put in a different part to help out.
Definition of Role - the position or purpose that someone or something has in a situation, organization, society, or relationship. (Anon., 2017). In education environment there is assumption for a role of teacher, tutor, mentor, instructor, lecturer, etc. The main role for a teacher is to teach to the best ability, engaging all students in planned activities. Without highly stimulating learning opportunities, students will not be able to progress in their learning and develop in their future careers.
Teams consist of personnel with varied backgrounds, experience, education, and intellectual ability. These differences will, by nature lend themselves to varying perceptions in business, its problems and solutions, which result in
3) Task roles are defined by a task that needs doing, and a person is asked or appointed to fill it.
The identification and understanding of an individual’s role and that of the other team member’s roles is crucial as is the recognition of how the different roles complement each other and work together.
Whilst it is important to know and succeed in your own role within the school it is also beneficial to have knowledge of others roles within your team and how you all can work effectively together.
Two established research sources for the role conflict and role ambiguity (Newton & Keenan, 1987; and Rizzo, House, & Lirtzman, 1970) were used for this study. An examination of these two sources reveals that while there was much overlap in their content, there were also slight variations in the wording of some items. Rizzo et al., for example, introduced the item ‘I know what my responsibilities are’ while Newton and Keenan
Syer & Connolly (1996) describes a “team system” as a group of people who constitute a system of interrelated entities and whose members share a common goal. They argue that team members need to develop awareness of themselves and each other, and of their differences, through giving descriptive feedback. This allows appreciation of differences, good contact and improved communication. Trust, respect, team spirit and synergy may then emerge. Consequently this leads to a highly developed awareness. The notion of a cycle more easily suggests the kind of continuous process that teams go through and need to revisit as new members
When we talk about a ‘role’ most people instantly think of playing a part, or acting in some capacity. A role involves some idea of expected behaviour associated
Roles and responsibilities – It is possible that during the project development some staff may have difficulty in defining their roles within the team or were not part of the role development process that takes place during the forming stage of Tuckman’s team development model. It is also likely within the project team to have duplication of roles/function, even though Belbin’s Team roles model may have been used. However it is not a pre-requisite that all team must have the nine roles specific by Belbin. ‘Team members can take on more than one role and some roles are not necessary in certain teams’. (Horn 2009:13)
This fable was a great way to promote the importance of a team and its functions. This book had many highlights throughout the context and I would highly recommend it to leaders of a corporation or of that of a team like setting. This book offered many great implications of the model and how to use it in many diverse settings when trying to build and manage successful teams.
1.2 Identify the tasks and resources required for the activity, including any operational constraints that apply
In many aspects of our life, it is pervasive to work in a team. No matter in company, school, or another type of team it is necessary to be a part of a team and to achieve a team goal by corporations. People join a team with different personalities, goals, values, beliefs and needs. On the one hand, these differences can be a valuable quality of teams. On the other hand, these same differences inevitably lead to different levels of conflicts as well.
This theory is a combined of two influential theories on group behavior, which Kenneth Benne and Paul Sheats have wrote in article of ‘’Functional Roles of Group Members’’ in 1940. This theory worked in some teams that are effective in some but for some it isn’t. Their work influenced other earlier research and thinking about the function of group. The have researched more recently and have refined many ideas. Group roles are extremely useful and interesting in the way of looking at the behavior of the team. 26 different group role have been defined which can be played by one or more people within a group depends on that person’s skill.
A team is a group of people working together to achieve the same objectives. Katzenbach and Smith state in their report The Discipline of Teams (1993) that ‘the essence of a team is common commitment. Without it, groups perform as individuals; with it, they become a powerful unit of collective performance.’ Throughout this study, I will analyse the many different advantages and disadvantages of working in teams and its effects on team members and their performance and commitment within the team. I will consider many different aspects of team work and refer to certain established theories in
