HP (Hewlett-Packard) is a multinational information technology (IT) company that sells software, hardware, and related business services. In 2012, Foxconn, one of HP 's key suppliers were accused of violating human ethics and labor laws. Foxconn was using student labor in the assembly of iPhones. It 's legal to hire student workers in China, but the trouble occurs when students were forced to do irrelevant internships, work overtime almost daily, and work night shifts. These conditions break the Chinese labor contract, as well as the standards of internships set by the Chinese ministry of education. HP is committed to making a difference in people’s lives, but what are the possible strategies that can be adopted to address these labor issues in China. In order to reach the desired solution, both the public and private politics should be considered. Some of the possible strategies will be covered in this memo. Strategy 1: HP can lobby the Chinese government about protecting its supply chain labor’s rights. HP believes getting involved in the political process and policy is important and appropriate for conducting its business. It has a dedicated team called “HP Government Affairs” that is committed to participate actively in any government, public policy according to the laws and its business conduct standards.
