An educated person is someone who uses the necessary knowledge to facilitate and thus succeed in all aspects of life. “Gentleman” is “a Confucian term for a person of virtue and breeding—one who always fulfills the appropriate roles for a person of his or her rank” (6). Tzu uses various text patterns, such as illustrations, comparisons, and causes and effects, to describe the gentleman. He started his essay with metaphors and narratives that emphasize a world with no learning involved at all. “Blue comes from the indigo plant but is bluer than the plant itself” (6) is one of the most obvious examples of figurative speech relating to this concept. Tzu then moves on to suggest that laziness brings disaster. He uses several vivid examples of each phenomenon that always has consequences, and he uses them to support the idea that “[t]he glory or shame that come to a man are no more than the image of his virtue” (7). At times throughout his essay, he compares two ideas relating to moral learning and explains what makes each of them different. For example, he demonstrates contrary learning styles between the man who uses learning for excellence and the other who uses learning for social attraction (9). Professors Bojan Borstner and Smiljana Gartner of the University of Maribor believe that ethical decision making through critical thinking is proven to be the best way for people to improve themselves as human beings. In fact, some ethics instructors want to teach their students how to project human nature itself, act in accordance with their moral beliefs, and use reasoning and thinking skills to analyze specific problems (Borstner 13). If these main class objectives could affect the curricula of educational institutions worldwide, a majority of students may have a better understanding of virtue, an expanded knowledge of human nature, and more effective communication skills for discussing any current issue. At any educational level, a typical ethics course requires students to enhance their persuasion skills by understanding and taking advanced steps to finding the right solutions to controversial issues. Reasoning skills are the most effective way to personally attain moral values because it enables people to view ethics as a critically reflective thinking process. It also helps individuals express their thoughts and reactions toward each ethical dilemma that they face in their lifetime, yet there are other steps beyond reasoning to successfully handle real-life situations. As a future teacher, it will be part of my job to increase my students’ moral reasoning. Moral reasoning deals with how individuals think about moral issues. Lawrence Kohlberg developed stages of moral reasoning which researchers use to assess an individual. According to Steinberg (2014), the adults in an adolescent’s life can impact their moral development. Therefore, as their teacher, I will conduct activities in my classroom, such as Collaborative Reasoning, Think-Pair-Share, a line activity, and an online discussion board, which will foster my students’ moral development. He writes that “the learning of the gentleman enters his ear, clings to his mind, spreads through his four limbs, and manifests itself in his actions” (Tzu). Furthermore, “the Gentleman” honors ritual, for if he does not, he “is no more than a desultory pedant” (Tzu). Lastly, “the Gentleman” only speaks of learning with people who are “respectful”, “reasonable”, and “gentle” (Tzu); furthering Hsun Tzu’s point that there is more required than just accumulating knowledge. John Henry Newman’s contrary definition of the gentleman leads him to the belief that the accumulation of knowledge is by itself a worthy pursuit. He quotes Cicero, who considered “knowledge the very first object to which we are attracted, after the supply of our physical wants” (Newman), making it inherently important. Newman calls this kind of knowledge, knowledge for knowledge’s sake, “Liberal” (Newman) knowledge. Liberal knowledge, as opposed to “servile” (Newman) knowledge, is knowledge with no end other than knowledge itself. Zhu Xi and Aquinas both empower learning as a means of self-cultivation, but they approach it in different ways. Zhu Xi encourages learning of one’s surroundings in order to know good from bad, to know and embrace one’s culture and environment. Aquinas stresses learning from one’s nature because there are many examples the king can adopt to his own ruling, whether it is the nature of a nourishing father or sailor on a ship. These are two different types of learning, one stresses active learning and the other learning by example. Learning leads to practice and self-improvement.
My personal experiences during this course are ones that will provided a solid ethical backbone throughout my personal and professional career. Before this course began, I knew what ethics was, that I didn’t know was all the variables that related to ethics. This course provided a solid overview of the variables that should weighted in all ethical decision making. Also provided with this course were multiple perspectives into ethical discourse. A variety of activities allowed me to grow ethically and will make me a better professional.
In the olden day, children studied the Four Books in schools, which are Confucian Analects, the Book of Mencius, The Great Learning, and the Doctrine of the Mean. According to Zhu Xi, a philosopher, there is a diverse sequence to read the Four Books, not the sequence that shows above. He suggested the Great Learning to be the first book to study, because it sets pattern and outlines structure. I chose to develop my Ethical Understanding Capability. This is because ethical issues is about right and wrong, as well as what is the best society and what is the best for individual, which is what I want to focus. Besides, this is a chance for me to be honest in experiences and decision-making, in which I will be objective and will not let my perspective affect the results. Furthermore, I will respect the rights, opinions and decisions of others when interviewing because my topic is sensitive and personal. I hope that through this research project, my capability will develop, in which I will respond to the world’s issue more realistically and objectively.
Finally, Confucius criticizes those who place a lot of emphasis in learning theory and not actions, according to Confucius actions are more important because they are the foundation for becoming a gentleman, however theory is usually only learned for the purposes of achieving an official position so that one can have fine foods and comforts (Confucius 4.8). I completely agree with that because I have noticed that a lot of stuff that we learn while in college is useless when we go to the real world and most of us just do it so that we can obtain a diploma and hopefully obtain a better job, maybe we should focus more on learning about actions that can actually help us on our daily lives in the real
Ethics is a subject that deals with people’s thoughts and actions, and whether or not these thoughts and actions are considered good or bad. The head represents the Way of Knowledge that is reason, while the heart represents the Way of Knowledge that is emotion. Many factors influence ethical thinking, and the use of reason and emotions are two of these factors that I am going to discuss. Many ethical decisions rely on logical thinking rather than emotional thinking, which is what I am going to establish in the following paragraphs. Logical thinking is more reliable than emotional thinking when dealing with ethics because it does not take into account any personal bias towards a situation. I will consider only these two specific Ways of Knowledge when evaluating whether or not ethics is more a matter of the head or the heart.
