Statement of Opportunity
The statement of opportunity comes from the mission statement which is a statement of purpose of any organization. The organizational statement of opportunity for services provided for high school dropouts is that the organization will provide a staff that is knowledgeable in different fields which are required for high school dropouts to obtain the skills needed to gain employment, provided that the setting is safe and structured. In addition to not having any basic skills for even manual labor, they also lack basic reading and writing skills most times. The local community is experiencing hardships in both schools and businesses. The dropout rates are soaring each year. The local school districts are suffering from worsening financial situations and losing teachers. Dropout rates have been examined from several perspectives. Event dropout rates measure the amount of students who drop out of school in a year without completing a certain level of schooling.
Status dropout rates are reported by the NCES (The U.S. National Center for Education Statistics) as proportion of young adult’s ages 16-24 not currently enrolled in school who have not completed a high school diploma or equivalent. Dropout rates status differ by many demographic factors, including gender, race, and ethnicity, immigration status, and geographic location. In the United States dropout rates are higher in males than females. Hispanics have the higher rate, followed by African Americans, non-Hispanic, whites, and Asian Americans.
There are other factors associated with early school leaving. Researchers have focused on three different topics. First topic, student and family factors identified as contributing to dropouts is gender, racial, and ethnic minority status, low socioeconomic status, poor school performance, low self-esteem, delinquency, substance abuse, and pregnancy.
