Jim helps Huck develop greater character changes throughout the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain. In the story Huck learns a lot of lessons on how to grow into a better and more trustworthy friend. Jim helped him throughout the story to show him a different side of life, and how everyone is different and they grow in different surroundings. Jim and Huck both grew in maturity with their life, and wanted the best for one another. Huck finds out a new identity for the world as he grows later on in the story. During the book, Huck hasn’t really experienced what life really was and what you might encounter during times that just come out of anything. Huck would pull jokes on Jim all the time, just because he thought they were funny. "That all comes of my being such a fool as to not remember that wherever you leave a dead snake its mate always comes there and curls around it." (Twain 40) Huck learns that jokes have a limit to them at times and need to be thought out more clearly. (123 HelpMe) Huck later in the novel finds out, that’s not how you deal with life and figures out that’s not how you get to keep friends and grow up. Huck is very uncomfortable living in a decent house, sleeping in a good bed, wearing decent clothes and shoes, eating normal food, and not being allowed to curse, swear, or smoke. (Cliffs Notes) In the middle of the book, Huck starts to distinguish what is the right thing to do. He starts to think if all the things he was doing before with Jim and Tom were too mean and stupid to do. One specific example is when he decides to steal the money that the king and duke have, “I got to steal that money somehow; and I got to steal it some way that they wont suspicion I done it." (Twain 133) After Huck stole the money Huck and Jim didn’t feel bad at all, and knew that they did the right thing after all. He learns that not everyone can be scammed on, that the real life is important and that you can’t do anything stupid like that.
