The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain has been banned from many schools and public libraries due to the use of racial slurs. Although these slurs are frowned upon now, they were a normal part of the society shaped Huckleberry (Huck) Finns life. The world Huck Finn grew up in is before the abolition of slavery. This is when the states is begun to separate, but the civil war is not yet stirring. Huckleberry’s life was influenced by his small town of St. Petersburg, the time period he lived in, and certain people.
One evening Huck finds out that his father, Pap Finn, has come back to town. Because Pap has a background of violence and alcohol abuse, Huck is anxious about Pap's intentions, especially toward his money in the bank. When Pap talks to Huck and tells him to quit school and stop trying to better himself, Huck still attends school just to spite Pap. Huck's fears are soon acknowledged when Pap kidnaps him and takes him across the Mississippi River to a cabin on the Illinois coast. Although Huck becomes at ease with his life free from religion and school, Pap's beatings become too dangerous, and Huck fakes his own death and escapes down the Mississippi. Huck comes up a few miles down at Jackson's Island, and there he comes across Miss Watson's
Living on a raft sailing down the Mississippi River trying to free a slave seems like an ambitious task to take on. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck and Jim take on this laborious endeavor. Throughout their life on the raft, they encounter numerous obstacles, mostly chaotic, such as robbers and trying to keep Jim out of the public eye. Juxtaposing society and the raft, society subsist corruption and Huck and Jim do not want to be associated with the crooked society. There has been an agglomeration of controversy and questions about whether or not college athletes should be paid along with their scholarships. There are good arguments for both sides and so far, the college board of athletics has not changed their current view on the situation, which is that the athletes are students and do not work for the university, therefore, they should not be paid. The following are questions that must be asked before determining whether or not college athletes should be paid or not. Are the scholarships the athletes are giving considered their payment? If the athletes are paid, can the school only pay certain sports or players? Sports such as men’s basketball and football have the strongest case in getting paid because they bring in a good amount of money for the universities and the NCAA. Last, if colleges do pay the student athletes, should they overlook what the players use the money for? Many people believe
John H. Wallace has a very passionate objection to Huckleberry Finn being in schools before the college level. He raises the question would the best teacher be able to successfully prepare students for the irony and meanings meant in the book. He says it would be dangerous to give that power to a teacher of middle school or high school level students. He feels the book would ruin any chance of a student/ teacher bond between a black student and his/her teacher. The book is racist and promotes a belief that black people are dishonest, dumb, and viewed less than human. The black student carries a burden no white student could ever understand. It is harmful to their self-esteem and violates their constitutional rights. The book uses the word “nigger” over one hundred times in the book. It is a terrible offensive word. He believes white authors have used it in books to depict an
More specifically, this is shown when Jim and Huck get lost in the fog and become separated. As Huck has the canoe and finds Jim on the raft, he is relieved they found each other, but later, Huck decides it would be wise to lie and say that he was dreaming the entire time and that they were together. Afterward, Jim comes to the realization that Huck is lying and is wonderment as to why Huck would try to deceive him. From this, Jim’s feelings are hurt, mainly because he had trusted Huck, and does not know why he tried to beguile him.
Jim has a family of his own who he is separated from during the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Huck was lucky enough to get “adopted” into Jim’s family and become someone that Jim truly cares about and vows to protect. Jim teaches Huck what a true friend is and also what loyalty is. When Huck and Jim were on Jackson Island, Huck refers to the island as “home,” this indicates that Huck and Jim have formed a family bond and will protect each other. Jim gets extremely worried and panics the night Huck played a trick on him in the fog. Jim is joyful when he sees Huck alive again after the fog separates them, “…is dat you, Huck? En you ain’ dead-you ain’drownded…it’s too good for true…” (Twain, 2001, p. 106) Later, Jim scolds Huck when he discovers that Huck has lied to him. Jim makes Huck own up to his lie by saying “Dat truck dah is trash…trash is what people is dat puts dirt on de head er dey fren’s en makes ‘em ashamed.” (Twain, 2001, p. 109) Jim is discouraged that Huck tricked him yet again, but this time Huck told Jim that he dreamt that they got separated in the fog. It becomes obvious that when Jim fell asleep he was tired from searching and yelling for Huck all night long. Jim showed his willingness to sacrifice anything to make sure Huck was safe. Jim loves Huck like family and wants the best for him. Huck was shocked at this because he didn’t realize that slaves could be as concerned about
Huck’s view changed after Jim told him “Jim won’t ever forgit you, Huck; you’s de bes’ fren’ Jim’s ever had; en

Throughout the existence of humans there has been violence. Some examples of violence that people can identify are war between countries because of political and religious disagreements. Discrimination (which is a type of violence) by its country of origin, color and customs. Finally, in the family we can find several types of violence, the most common is violence towards women physically and psychologically, child abuse, and the one that I identified with my siblings is their behavior towards parents after playing violent videogames. In violence we can identify two types of people, the first is that which uses violence to take power, and the second is to use violence to be free of the people who have power.
