Huckleberry Finn made a lot of big decisions for someone of his age. At 13 or 14 years old, he had more world experience than most of us will get in a lifetime. Many crucial decisions had to be made in order to get him to where he was at the end of the story. Sometimes his decisions turned out to be good ones and some bad. There were also many instances where, according to society, he was making the wrong decision but in his heart and with what we know now, it was the right decision. The first major decision that I think of when I think about Huck Finn is when he lied to the slave catchers about who was on his raft. Once again, it’s Huck doing the right thing because he knows what’s best in his heart. This time though, the decision doesn’t have anything to do with Jim. He is protecting the Wilkes girls from the King and the Duke. When the girls decided to trust the thieves, whom they thought were their uncles from England, with all of the money that they inherited from Peter Wilkes, Huck knew he had to do something to protect them. He took the money from the King and the Duke and was going to hide it and send a letter to the girls later explaining where it was, but while he was taking the money he heard someone coming and quickly threw it in Peter’s coffin and ran away. He was buried before Huck could get the money out. He thought his plan might still work though; at one point Huck wrote, “Says I, if it could stay where it is, all right; because when we get down the river a hundred mile or two I could write back to Mary Jane, and she could dig him up again and get it”. (Twain, 182-183 His plan didn’t work out quite how he wanted it too but the end result was still the same because later in a conflict, between the fake Wilkes brothers and the real Wilkes brothers, the body was exhumed and the money was found. It proved that the thieves were in fact trying to steal their money and the girls got it all back. Once again he risked his own safety to do what he thought was
