AJ Nieves Mrs. Revor Honors English 11 8-22-15 St. Petersburg: The novel begins in a small riverfront town named St. Petersburg. The main character, Huckleberry Finn, starts off the novel living with the Widow Douglas and Mrs. Watson. Huckleberry Finn despises living with the Widow Douglas and Mrs. Watson, and would much rather go back to his old way of life. They constantly teach him better manners, and overall civilize him to their way of life. We soon learn that even though Huck doesn’t like his new life, but it is a lot better than his old one because he has a drunken/abusive father. Huck is forced to move in with his father in a cabin away from the Widow Douglas and Mrs. Watson. Hucks dad continues to torment him and take money for alcohol. One night Huck’s father is so drunk he almost kills Huck, in defense he holds a gun all night just to be safe. With no other way out, Huck fakes his death by making it look like Pap killed him and runs away without telling anybody. Huck befriends the Grangerfords son named Buck, he tells Huck that they have had a fued with the Shephersons for a long time. One day a battle broke out between the two families because a grangerford daughter and Shperhson son ran away together. Mr Grangerford and his two brothers were gunned down, and buck and his brother were being shot at. Huck watches buck and a boy be ambushed by shepherdsons on top of a tree. Huck is emotionally hurt by bucks death, They were becoming really good friends and he had to watch him be killed. Additionally, this event is significant because Huck sees how the Grangerfords treated him so well and they didn’t deserve the death that came to them. When Huck see Bucks body in the river he has to cover it up because it is the least he could do for him after all buck did for him. At this oint I believe Huck thinks their journey cant get much worse than it already is, he has witnessed death and disappointment too
