Human Beings and Nature: The Scientific Revolution
The Scientific Revolution, perhaps one of the most significant examples of human beingsí relationship with the natural world, changed the way seventeenth and eighteenth century society operated. The power of human knowledge has enabled intellectual, economical, and social advances seen in the modern world. The Scientific Revolution which included the development of scientific attitudes and skepticism of old views on nature and humanity was a slow process that spanned over a two century period. Ptolemaic theory was supported by the Catholic Church, which also viewed humans as the center of God's creation. In his book On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres, Copernicus kept many of Ptolemyís ideas, such as the assumptions of the circular orbit of planets and epicycles. However, he proposed a correction to Ptolemyís theory, stating that if the sun were at the center of the universe the epicycles could be reduced in number. As he states in The Heliocentric Statement, ìWhat appears to us as motions of the sun arise not from its motion but from the motion of the earth and our sphere, with which we revolve about the sun like any other planet. The earth has, then, more than one motionî(1). Although he maintained most assumptions of past astronomers, he attempted to eliminate the mathematical inconsistencies of old theory and offered a new approach to solving scientific problems. By freeing science from rigid conceptions of cosmic structures, Copernicus proposed that mathematics was the cornerstone of scientific thought. This would challenge the old dogmas, such as the earth being at the center of the universe. Consequentially, individualsí relationships with nature would change as they were freed from rigid conceptions of cosmic structure and many other conceptions from discoveries that would follow. This theory, The Geocentric Universe of Ptolemy, was adjusted by most of the people during The Middle Ages. However, much later on, Nicolaus Copernicus, a Polish astronomer, disagreed with Ptolemy’s theory. The Church denied this theory because they did not want to be proven wrong. If the Church was wrong about this part of the universe, this would then cause man to wonder what else they could be wrong about, or even lied to them about. The scientific revolution, also known as “The Age of Enlightenment” was a certain period of a time which changed people's thoughts, beliefs, and perspectives on religion, technology, and various other human philosophies. Long before the scientific revolution took place, there were rules that society followed where all humanity had the same, or similar thoughts and beliefs, and they were often told all the things they had to do by priests, churches, and other of the kind. This went on until approximately the 1550 to 1700’s, when the “The Age of Enlightenment” took place and changed everyone’s mindset on the aspects of human philosophies. The scientific revolution is represented in several different ways and humans don’t realize that the scientific revolution occurs everyday globally and affects us all the time. I am going to be telling you how the scientific revolution is represented in the both Dracula and Frankenstein, which are captivating, gothic horror novels.
Aristotle’s model by today’s standards can easily be picked apart, but at the time, it was the best explanation that could be made with so little technology and insight. Although his theories have long since been replaced, they created a base for future scientists to work off of and challenge. Over time many great scientists began to question Aristotle’s theories. Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543), for example, contested the absolute significance of the earth, and he did not agree that it should be viewed as the center of the entire universe (Lizhi & Youquan, 1987). He plotted the earth at the center of the universe and created a heliocentric system just as mathematically complicated as the Ptolemaic system (one that also improved on Aristotle’s), but it explained a number of anomalies, including resolving the issue of retrograde motion (Ede, A. & Cormack, L., 2004). The problem was that Aristotle’s physics of ‘natural motion’ fell apart without the earth in the center of everything.
Over the course of the years, society has been reformed by new ideas of science. We learn more and more about global warming, outer space, and technology. However, this pattern of gaining knowledge did not pick up significantly until the Scientific Revolution. In the sixteenth and seventeenth century, the Scientific Revolution started, which concerned the fields of astronomy, mechanics, and medicine. These new scientists used math and observations strongly contradicting religious thought at the time, which was dependent on the Aristotelian-Ptolemy theory. Some major scientists that contributed to this major era include Nicholas Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Galileo Galilei, and Isaac Newton. The scientific revolution took place following the Renaissance, from the mid-1500’s until about 1700. This revolution took place throughout Europe. This occurred because, following the Renaissance and the reformation, people became very curious and wanted to understand how the Earth worked. It was almost as if, being that this occurred after the reformation, that they wanted to either confirm or refute the church’s claims. The significance of the scientific revolution was one of great proportions, it changed mankind’s understanding the importance of science, and of how the Earth and solar system function.
His more relaxed viewpoint on the interpretations of the Bible and scripture allowed him to accept the Copernican theory. He even justified his stance through principals. The first principle was called biblical limitation. “I should judge that the authority of the Bible was designed to persuade men of these articles and propositions which, by science, or by any other means than through the very mouth of the Holy Spirit.” This principle overall explained that the bible could only be understood and interpreted correctly by the Holy Mother Mary. This gave a justification against claims from previous scholars such as St. Aquinas and St. Augustine. These two scholars took ideas for the overall argument from interpretations of the Bible made from either themselves or those before them. Therefore, Galileo believed that the interpretations were false. This allowed for science to not come in conflict with Catholicism as no one truly understood it. Another principle was the priority of physical demonstration. This principle stressed more on the empirical evidence before scriptural evidence. For this principle, Galileo focused primarily on nature and this allowed him to protect the concept of the Copernican theory from the bible. The Scientific Revolution was an era where Francis Bacon, Galileo Galilei. Nicolaus Copernicus, and Johannes Kepler challenged the status quo, and where many discoveries that would change the way people thought about everything including the universe were made. Before the Scientific Revolution happened, many Europeans only believed in what the church said, but the revolution unveil new answers based on science; totally the opposite of what the church had adopted in earlier years. This period became the foundation of thinking in a different way, and the Enlightenment relied on those new perspectives to expand other theories that would forever change life.
The Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment, which spanned from the late 1500’s to 1700’s, shaped today’s modern world through disregarding past information and seeking answers on their own through the scientific method and other techniques created during the Enlightenment. Newton’s ‘Philsophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica’ and Diderot’s Encyclopedia were both composed of characteristics that developed this time period through the desire to understand all life, humans are capable of understanding the Earth, and a sense of independence from not having to rely on the nobles or church for knowledge.
Nicholas Copernicus was the first to question the universal truths and teachings of the church. He devised a theory that the earth along with the other planets revolved around the sun. This theory disagreed with Aristotle and the old teachings that the universe revolved around the earth, and that man was the center of the universe.
Galileo’s Dialogue on the Two Chief World Systems uses powerful logic and simply described concepts to overcome the Aristotelian bias of the populous and argue in favor of Copernicus’ heliocentric view of the universe. Copernicus theorized that the earth, along with the other planets in the sky, is in motion around the sun. The Aristotelian’s geocentric worldview, that the earth is the motionless center of the universe, was deeply ingrained into the minds of the people and the teachings of the church. An influential figure of the Scientific Revolution is Sir Isaac Newton. He made many advancements in the field of science and mathematics, he discovered Gravity, developed the three basic laws of motion, and co-development of Calculus. Isaac Newton did several thing that positively affected the scientific community during the Scientific Revolution and still affect society today, he recognized the three laws of motion, discovered gravity, and co-developed calculus.
