Human Characterism In Anthem, By Ayn Rand

The novel of Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, contributes to controversial subjects in society that are still relevant today. Some issues addressed by Rand in her novel include: equality, social hierarchy, individuality, and government. Throughout the duration of reading Anthem the issues in which Rand makes relevant are not obvious, but more so discussed through conflicts and situations that the main character, Equality 7-2521, encounters. Although many of the altercations that present social issues are provided by either other characters singlehandedly or by a group of the characters in alliance, some of the main issues that arise in this novel are presented within the main character himself.

Character development is vitally important in Anthem. As we watch Equality 7-2521 change from a state of guilt and unhappiness to a state of pride and self-worthiness, the process creates the bulk of the story elements. One of the most important instances that show how much Equality has changed occurs in Chapter 8. At the end of this chapter, Equality bursts into laughter after thinking about what has happened. Equality laughs when he remembers that he is the damned because he feels liberated, not ruined.

The story of Anthem takes place in dystopian future in which freedom and human rights have been obliterated. Equality 7-2521, the protagonist, is a street sweeper who finds a tunnel where he conducts his science experiments which are considered a sin. Throughout the book we see him change and discover how capable he is through a multitude of literary devices. In the novella , Anthem, Ayn Rand utilizes vivid imagery and a profusion of diction to frenetically emphasize the idea of love.

In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand the main character, Equality, lives in a collectivist society, but he leaves because he does not agree with these values. The book, Anthem by Ayn Rand, is a story that is written about a man named Prometheus, or otherwise known as Equality 7-2521, who chooses to be different in a society where everyone was meant to be the same. Throughout most of the book, he has trouble finding the meaning of his life. As he realizes that he can be different, he discovers the power of his own mind so towards the end of the book he turns into a more proud and independent individual. He learns the wrongs of his society, so as a result he rebels against them. Ayn Rand represents the cruelty of collectivism in Anthem by portraying a society that is oppressed by men.

“Anthem” is about a boy named Equality 7-2521 who is Street Sweeper of the society and was given this job as punishment for having too bright a mind, too curious, and for fighting amongst his brothers. When he was given this job, he thought of it as an atonement to his sins for being these things. While sweeping the streets, he finds a grill buried in the ground, leading to a underground subway and sneaks down there every day to perform experiments to satisfy his curiosity and his willing to learn. Equality then finds a young woman named Liberty 5-3000 and has thoughts that no man or woman can have except at the Time of Mating. After completing many experiments, Equality discovers electricity and uses it to make a light. In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, Equality is a street sweeper. The Council of Vocations selected Equality to be a street sweeper. In school, Equality was the most intelligent student in his class. The Council of Vocations assigned Equality the job of a street sweeper due to a sinister motivation. He was chosen as a street sweeper because they were scared of what Equality could become. They were scared because Equality was very intelligent and unique from all of the others. The council selected him as a street sweeper so he would cause no damage.

In the book Anthem, there are many characters mentioned throughout the occurrences and events that have taken place. After reading about a variety of characters, I have noticed that there is a protagonist and an antagonist. The protagonist would be Equality 7-2521. Equality 7-2521 has been assigned as a street sweeper. He believes in being independent and does not like the fact that you can’t be your own person in the society he lives in. The antagonist would be the collective society and its rules or a different perspective such as the council who makes these rules. Two characters who influence the succession of the plot would be Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000. Equality 7-2521 is independent and has hopes to change the society. Equality wants to be able to be free and be his own person rather than being considered as a whole group for the rest of his life. After all, he does live in a dark age of an authoritarian state. Equality 7-2521 is interested in science and does research on his own in secret even though he is commanded to be a Street Sweeper. The other character who influences the plot is Liberty 5-3000. Equality 7-2521 loves this young woman. When Equality 7-2521, also known as Prometheus is shut out by society, Liberty 5-3000 follows him into the unknown forest recognized as the Uncharted Forest. This shows how she is willing to die with Equality than to live in a society where you can’t be individualized.
