Human-Computer Interfaces
Technology
Various technologies have been developed to allow for human-computer interaction in gaming. The main ways of human-computer interaction in gaming are through a mouse and keyboard, a controller and through a touchscreen. Controllers have evolved greatly since their inception, at the same rate video games have advanced. Controllers started with pong paddles. They came in many variations but the main concept was some form of slider, whether it moved vertically, horizontally or rotated to move the player up and down the screen during a game of pong. Some only allowed for 1D up and down movement, while more advanced ones allowed for 2D movement with the Fairchild Channel F allowing for 2D movement,

The design of joysticks were based on flight controls. Another type of controller common during the second generation was the use of keypads, used by the ColecoVision and the IntelliVision. Games would come with a cardboard overlay to show the games controls. These were typically clunky and difficult to control compared to the fluidity of joysticks. The Atari 5200 combined both, with a keypad and joystick together with multiple action buttons on the side and introduced a pause and reset button - innovative for the time.

From the third generation of video game consoles, controllers became the standard method of input for console video games, and have remain so since. They were first introduced by the Nintendo Famicom in 1983 and have had an increased number of buttons and functions since. During the release of the fifth generation PS1 the design of controllers had been standardised by Sony (Playstation) and Microsoft (Xbox). Controllers introduce movement through the D-Pad and analog sticks (introduced in fifth generation, along with the rumble feature) and replaced keypads and fire buttons with ergonomically placed buttons - with the overall design of controllers made to fit the hand. The Xbox introduced a home screen button during the sixth generation. During the eighth generation Playstation replaced the select button with a
Nintendo has dominated the console market with their first handheld gaming device called Gameboy, having sold over 150 million units, and continuing to create more handheld ones. Games have also become easily accessible on smart phones, following the trend of portability. According to research conducted by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), 43% of gamers play games on their smartphones, and 25% play on a wireless device. Video game consoles have drastically improved since the 1970s, having become lighter, faster, and more interactive. All of these improvements were made possible by the advancements in hardware.
Although, seeing as video games are increasingly popular today, not everyone met as unfortunate of a fate. Today, many could credit this to the video game development corporation known as Atari, which arose in 1972 and continuously flourished until about 1982. In 1972, Atari came out with PONG, the first electronic arcade game, and it was an enormous accomplishment that exploded into what is now called the electronic gaming revolution. As time passed, Atari managed to triumph over its competition time and time again, but that is not to say that each of the failed corporations did not feature something that is used today. In fact, a couple of the failed organizations contributed something original to what is common today. For instance, Fairchild Camera and Instrument creating the first system that could play several different games, rather than just one. Another aforementioned group, RCA, was the first to produce and utilize keypad controllers instead of paddles or joysticks. Other consoles that came along, such as Intellivision and Vectrex, sported better graphics than the Atari’s consoles and games, but they still did not manage to gross the amount of money that Atari did because Atari was still on top of collecting all of the most entertaining and enjoyable games of their time. Keep in mind what attracted the masses to video games in the past: fun and addictive gameplay, not how good they looked. Now that the principal eras of gaming have been
If you've never touched a video game controller in your life, but do have avid players in your household, you may be in for a bewildering month. That's because we're on the verge of what the gaming industry excitedly calls 'a new console generation'. In short, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, once the most powerful games machines on the planet are being replaced – the former by the Xbox One, the latter by the PlayStation 4 (PS4).
Of course, when playing games, you can use a key mapper in order to control the inputs. You can use the xbox or playstation controllers on the PC, or even the Wii motion controls with enough modification.
The first console was called the Brown Box and was mad by a TV maker, Ralph Baer. The Brown Box was made in 1967. Nolan Bushaell bounded Atari in 1972. Atari then had its first big hit with the infamous Pong. In 1980 Mattel releases the Intelivision which is the first challenge against Atari’s rule. Nintendo wasn’t always the video game we know, it was originally a Japanese playing card company. In 1985 Nintendo releases the Nintendo releases the Nintendo Entertainment System, Wow what a creative name that is. Then in 1989 they released their second smash hit with the Gameboy, to compete with other companies such as Atari, Who released their Atari 2600. It included the newly released Tetris which would grow to become a massive hit to top off the huge sales of the Gameboy. In 1991 the super Nes is released. Then the original PlayStation is released in 1995 becoming extremely popular. To combat this popularity Nintendo released the Nintendo 64 in 1996. It includes favorites such as Mario 64, Zelda, and Metroid. The PS2 is released in 2000 marking the beginning of a new era of game consoles. It is the first console to include 128 bit graphics. A problem with original game consoles such as the Atari 2600 is they had little memory. With such little memory Graphics could only be up to 160 by 228 pixels. The normal today is 1925 by 1080 pixels. Some of the earliest adventure games used text instead of images to create the world you’re in. The first of these “text” games was
When video games were first being introduced to the general public, they weren’t all that exciting. Most gaming took place in arcades and most arcades didn’t have many game cabinets due to their being very few games to begin with. However, all of this changed when the Atari 2600 was released. At the time, Atari was known for their home computers and their hit arcade game “Pong”. Though the Atari 2600 might not have been the first video game system, it was definitely the most successful at that time and a great success for Atari’s first attempt at a home video game console. Thanks to the success of the 2600, video games began to take off and arcades started popping up all over the world with hits like “Pac-Man” and “Donkey Kong”. These would be the
The evolution of gaming has changed drastically over the past sixty years. From 1958’s “Tennis for Two” all the way till 2016’s newest “Oculus Rift”, there has been a significant amount of change. The “Tennis for two” was designed using an oscilloscope and played with two custom aluminum controllers. The development behind it is that American physicist, William Higinbotham, created the game after learning the computer
The luster of the controller always stayed the same. The Sony-made piece of equipment surprisingly survived all of the temper tantrum, button smashing challenge, and dog chew toy abuse that it has endured. The controller pushed me to involve video games as my main hobby as an adult. I never really put the controller down, I still play games dating all the way back to 2002. The controller also began to become smaller in ratio to my hands, but all the nostalgia makes me feel the same as I did when I was younger. While the newer technology has also become a part of the video game hobby, I knew that I could always return back to the old controller and enjoy the same games as I did in elementary school times.
The very first generation, or generation one (1972-77), began with the very first console, the Magnavox Odyssey. Many consoles were just Pong clones and many were made, with non removable, built in games (Generations of Games,2014). The second generation (1976-84) showed the likes of Atari and with it, quickly produced games. During this time, game consoles were cheaply produced and video games were quickly made because it was easy. This lead to games like Pac-Man Atari and E.T, games considered to be the worst of all time. These games existed to cash in on an existing product but were too clunky and broken to be enjoyed. The second generation also saw the release of the first handheld console the Milton Bradley Microvision (Generations of
The key facet responsible for the Wii’s popularity lies in the innovative design, which “calls to action” the player with physical movement. The writer views the wireless motion sensitive game console as a new, simple and fun method of gaming for all age groups. As a result, it may appeal not only to the traditional expert video game player like the PS3, but other individuals outside that segment. It thus
A lot of games are controlled using the Wii Remote Plus (which comes packaged with the title), and, for the most part, they play well. One of the poorest implementations of motion control is found in Figure Skating. It requires odd movement of the Wii Remote which makes the event unappealing. Figure Skating aside, all the other events play well using the Wii Remote Plus and the motion controls really bring them to life.
Herman et all (2002) points out that history of video games begins from 1971 year, when Nutting association released 1500 machines with Spacewar video game. At the beginning it was too difficult to control the game process and playing machines had huge dimensions. But by the time with new technologies they become more compact and easier to play. According to the information given by Herman et all (2002), the period between the years of 1978-1981 is called ‘golden age’ of video game industry. In this period the arcade games ‘Football’ and ‘Space Invaders’ were released. All previously known sale records were broken by these two games with nearly equal wages. In this time interval great breakthroughs in the field of graphics were achieved,
You also have the Easy Shift [+] - Technology available. This allows you to assign two different commands to your keys, which can be of great use in the game. Even the technical hardware is convincing. Inside the keyboard, they used a fast processor with error-free data transmission.
User interfaces (UI’s) are a core feature in just about every modern software application. Games are no exception to this rule. The vast majority of games utilize some form of UI to display information such as health, skills, maps, ammo for a weapon, and more. Unity 3D offers a variety of UI elements that you can use in your game. In this post, I’ll provide instructions on how to create a simple Pause menu in Unity. The Pause Menu will display text that says “Paused” and it will have three buttons; Resume, Retry and Quit. It will also display the game time since the scene loaded. By the end of the instruction, you should have something that looks sort of like this:
With the advancement of new technologies such as high definition(HD) and motion sensors it was only natural that consoles would evolve to incorporate these new breakthroughs. The first seventh generation console to be released was Microsoft’s Xbox 360 on
