On the contrary to public knowledge, November 19th is a United Nations (UN) observance for World Toilet Day. Although it is unclear as to who invented the first latrine, for Homo sapiens, public toilets are one of the major markers for sophistication as a species. With eradicating unrestricted urination and defecation behaviors, this helps humans to keep cities clean and overall reduces the risk of disease.
With this knowledge at hand, one could infer that other mammals have adapted this same behavior of sharing toilet spaces. In fact, rather than excreting randomly, many mammals have specific sites assigned for this activity. These sites are assigned to specific locations that are away from where the animals reside to sleep and feed.
However, where Homo sapiens differ from other mammals, is that human public toilets are designed primarily for sanitation purposes. As described by the United Nations, “World Toilet Day, on 19 November, is about taking action to reach the 2.4 billion people living without a toilet,” (UN 2016). The United Nations then further express how sanitation is a global development priority, and how sanitation, or lack of, can impact the livelihood of people (UN 2016).
In contrast, other mammal communal latrines serve a more unique purpose than just health. Not to neglect sanitation as being an important factor in the overall survival of a group, but other mammals have devised more diverse ways to use their excreta. These communal latrines seem to have
This is a summary of the video we saw on the fifth of july’s lecture about John Cleese’s documentary about lemurs. He went on a three week expedition to the forest of Madagascar, to follow five black and white lemurs known as”Carolina five” that were born into captivity and then released into the rainforest. The video discusses the characteristics of several primate species. Lemur behaviors shown include bipedalism, leaping, climbing, playing, sunning, eating, feeding, vocalization, clinging, grooming, and defecation.
These three islands contain the Gibbons, Red ruff and black and white lemurs. They can go almost anywhere on their little island as both the red ruffs and black and whites were greeting us as we approached their islands. They went into their night houses without any issue. I stayed away from each species until I was instructed to get closer. I gather all feces. Each has a different type of feces. The red ruffs have extremely pungent feces, the black and whites have more liquid consistent feces while the gibbons, feces were a solid form. Cleaned the red ruffs night cubes and today is not a disinfect day. All three species got boomer balls for their BE. The gibbons are arboreal and upon approaching their island they were completing array of locomotion. At gibbons, Philip gave me some of their food to observer their behavior and what we are not supposed to do when the female, China, acts up. I gave Enik his berries first and then I gave China hers. She stretched out her are and that is a negative behavior and I was instructed to wait till she had placed her arm back into the night house before I gave her the berries. Once they were locked in we went out on exhibit I was asked to clean all feces up this included the gibbons and the bird feces. Cleaned their night house and today is not a disinfect day. It is designed a lot like the Siamang night house. Cleaned the all the bird feces at the entrance last. Cleaned the black and white feces, placed BE and their water bowl. I had to be on the boat while Philip cleaned their night cubes. Since their island is the smallest their night cubes are on a platform off the
Chesty Puller was one of the best Marines in history because of his will power. He fought hard for our country and while doing this he helped us greatly in many wars. Every time he went out to serve our country he was at a risk of death. He risked his life so our lives could be better. Chesty Puller contributed to history by saving many people when serving our country and ended up as the most decorated Marine in history.
Before sanitation the world was full of endless diseases that would spread within days throughout an area. The plague for example was supported by unorganized sewage and waste disposal, otherwise known as a window. Streets were filled with trash, rotten food, and rubbish that attracted fleas and rodents who carried out the disease. Without proper sanitation the world as we know it would be wretched. Who is responsible for this sanitation? It is obviously not the general public, for we refuse to chase down a napkin that has been stolen by the breeze, or reuse an empty water bottle. We as humans that have been raised in the day in age always knowing that the loud garbage truck will come rolling through our neighborhood and the men drooping on the side of it will jump down, empty our bin, and we will never see the waste again. The part of the puzzle most of us seem to ignore is the fact that there is no magical wasteland that we send the trash off to. It is always accumulating, yet we cease to approach the problem with a resolution.

5). Although the student is being objective in the area of differences, the clear point is the cognizance in the fact that of both animals and human have goals; and that is to eat, sleep, and use the lavatory.
As part of the only Old World Monkey group I analyzed the Silver Langur whose scientific name is Trachypitneus Cristatus. In this cage there was a total of 6 monkeys so there was very much activity. This
For this paper I decided to visit Zoo Atlanta to observe lowland gorillas. I got to the zoo at around eleven in the morning and found out the feeding times for the gorillas. Once I found them, after watching them for a little while I selected the most active group to go watch during feeding. The point of this trip was to make me feel as if I was doing a field laboratory observation of primate social behavior and it definitely did. As you read my paper I will include what I saw, my feelings towards it, and also any questions or facts I received during my visit from volunteers or signs throughout the exhibit. To put this paper
All study procedures were conducted at the California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC). The study methods were approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of the University of California-Davis. All rhesus macaques were
An integral and necessary part of the built environment, moreover – our daily lives – restrooms provide the real human need for safe and sanitary facilities when we go to work, go to school, and participate in public life. Every day, many utilize the facilities of public toilets in workplaces, schools, and the innumerable other spaces we pass through and occupy while outside our homes (Kopas, 2012). As defined by Matthew Kopas (2012), a “public bathroom is any toilet facility that is not located in a private dwelling,” encompassing both traditional “on-street” local authority public toilets and “off-street” toilets to which the public has right of access, for instance, in shopping malls and commercial spaces (Greed, 2014), thus coining by the British Toilet Association (2001) to be toilets “away from home”.
In the modern age of high-speed internet, self-driving cars and VR it’s easy to forget that some places in the world still don’t have fresh water, let alone plumbing. The average person uses between 80 and 100 gallons of water a day. If you drink the recommended 8 glasses per day that’s only 8 oz a glass, or 64 oz in total. Of those 80 to 100 gallons we use an average of 3 every time we flush the toilet, 5 gallons per minute in the shower, 36 gallons for a bath, 8-27 gallons while doing the dishes, 25 gallons for every load of laundry and another 2 gallons a minute if you’re doing any outdoor watering or filling a kiddy pool. By using a newer toilet, you can reduce the gallons per flush to about 1.6 gallons, and when using a water saving shower head you can reduce your use to about 2 gallons per minute. This may not seem like much of a difference, but it can make a big impact.
There’s a saying, it’s that the three necessities of life are food, shelter, and toilet paper. In 1890, when toilet paper was first put on a roll, was when the world truly started. Toilet paper is the best invention ever created because it gets us clean and fresh in seconds. Joseph Gayette was the man behind it all. His invention has and will be used in the world for hundreds and hundreds of years. It’s almost as if you didn’t even leave to do your business. Imagine a life without toilet paper, I just couldn’t do it. Toilet paper is so easy to get rid of, practically everywhere, and it’s clean and effective.
Capital punishment has been used for centuries as a way to reduce the cost of inmates, to repay the families of victims and to aid in the safety of our society. In its time, capital punishment has taken on many different forms ranging from hangings and electrical shock to lethal injections. With the risks that are involved in providing a successful death to those on death row, capital punishment needs to be done in a more efficient manner. Complications have occurred during executions, which have fueled a need to repeal the Death Penalty.
Another area that needs consideration is the horrible condition of public toilets. The shortage of public toilets is a big challenge, hence people are compelled to use open spaces to answer the call of nature. The toilets that do exist are in such pathetic condition that one cannot use them.
