1. What do the myths show us about the human race of long ago? Throughout the introduction there consisted a considerable amount of heavily opinionated material and generalization of topics. This is why I will not rely on Hamilton’s description throughout either of my responses.
To begin the human race has made many advancements in the past few thousand years, that in the big scheme of things have taken little or no time at all to occur. Myths themselves reveal the initial abilities of humans to inscribe stories that before then were told only audibly. See to give you an example it’s relative to when you are a child and your mommy or daddy tells you a bedtime story without a book and you ask, “Where’s the book at?”

Hearing, seeing and visualizing the future and our present is frustrating. Believing in what is called “reality” and “society” based off decisions that weren’t made by us, but by the past to protect the outcome of what should happen later. People search for clues to help stabilize and move forward in life in myths and many other sources. Myths are traditional stories that deal with a historical explanation of some natural or social event, usually associating with supernatural appearances. The ancient Greeks told their cosmos through teachings and tales concerning their gods and heroes, and the importance of the culture and ritual practices to show their natural state. The myth of the Amazons and the great story of Hercules explain the
Myths are an important part of culture and its formation. Before coming up with the story line for each season, the writers must do extensive research on myths that people believed in many years ago. They must come together and fully understand the myth and its origin to easily and accurately retell the story to the viewers through the characters. When watching The Originals, one can see that the myths really did affect culture in communities. For example, the first myth introduced in the series is that werewolves exist. The original family uses dark magic to turn immortal so that they can be safe from the werewolves. Even though they had not seen the werewolves for themselves, they were sure the myth was true. The family went to great lengths to protect themselves from the potential threat, real or unreal, because they heard the myth. By watching The Originals, viewers can see how prominent myths were in society and how easily people believed them before science and
We tend to think of myth as an untrue story or as an outdated explanation of a mystery long since cleared up by science, but myth is actually a framework of meaning, a set of collective fantasies that story our relationship to each other, the world and the universe. To tell a myth is to tell a culture 's dream about its inner workings and truths. A myth tells its tale through symbol, image and metaphor.
The telling of tales is a tradition old as time. Ancient culture from all over the world have folktales and grand stories of their land. Although many of these cultures are divided by language barriers and thousands of miles, they all all share one thing in common: Myths. Myths were told to answer questions that these ancient societies pondered. Although there were many types of myths, creation myths were told to teach values that were highly values in that society, this was important because these values preserved their land.
All cultures across the world have different myths meant to explain the way in which everything was created. Members of the cultures, therefore, come up with their creation stories that tend to describe the creation of mankind, as well as the things around them. Additionally, through the use of relevant themes, the stories are told in a way that explains mysterious phenomena in the society, provide lessons to listeners and emphasize life aspects that each society finds important. As a result, myths such as the Iroquois and the Biblical creation stories, though extremely different, contain specific themes that, to some extent, show particular similarities. The creation story, as stated in the book of Genesis (Bible), explains that God created
These myths were first developed in a visual form, because only the elders knew how to read and write, they passed these stories down to the next generation in an oral form (“Greek Mythology” 2017).
The tradition of storytelling is as old as civilization itself. Man has always been fond of adventures and legends. Tales from epics have been sung by bards in all parts of the world. The Iliad, as a story, has existed long before Homer put it to paper. Owing to our intellectual prowess, humans have been capable of deciphering countless number of phenomenon. However, that which we could not account for, we feared or worshiped, labeling it as other-worldly. When man assigned the unintelligible as supernatural, he was absolutely smitten. He created fantasy- a world full of fairies, gnomes, sprites, monsters and ghosts- all inducing emotions of either wonder, delight, or horror. Jack Zipes in his work Fairy Tales and the Art of Subversion, emphasizing on the origin of fairy tales, states, "Though it is impossible to trace the historical origins and evolution of fairy tales to a particular time and place, we do know that humans began telling tales as soon
Throughout history, myths have been used to explain the emergence of our Earth, human existence, as well as the causes and meanings behind naturally occurring phenomena. Today, some of the most influential and well-known myths come from Ancient Greek Mythology. While the exact origins of Greek Mythology remain unknown, some of the earliest accounts of Greek myths are considered to be Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. These myths are thought to have originally been told through oral tradition. Over time, as Mythology became more established throughout Greek Civilization, these stories developed into formally written works of literature. The Ancient Greeks lived vicariously through the tales of their heroes, gods, and goddesses. Although thousands of
First, myth plays a role in human psychology as a medium for expressing unconscious mind since humans psychologically need to express their unconscious and avoid the repression of it. According to Jung, myth is “projection of the collective unconscious” (Jung Mythology ex. 9) and “we should everywhere come upon the same myth-motifs” (Jung Mythology ex. 4). This shows that the whole of myths over the world entail universal patterns, called archetypes. These archetypes are stored in humans’ unconscious mind (Jung Mythology ex. 3) and come from “constantly repeated experiences of humanity” (Jung Mythology ex. 7). Modern humans can have the same experiences with the primitives throughout history as the archetypes influences humans to experience
Myths are universal and transcendent through time; many ancient myths are seen recreated in modern times. The author uses Oedipus as a way of comparing myth to psychology. Dreams have also played a major role in civilization; the people who could interpret dreams can understand and create myths.
But there are many ways one could interpret myths, Bronislaw Malinowski, an anthropologist, believed that myths tell people about the origins of the early world and that it gives them a reality of how things are to repeat. Malinowski believed that myths weren’t kept alive because of interest, or because they are true tales, but because they give people are a reality of how mankind is to be determined. Malinowski even gives us an example of a grandmother and granddaughter that realize that although everyone still has that youth they once were, they have to come to the realization that everyone gets old and
Stated simply, the word myth, derived from the Greek word mythos, means story (Morford et al., p.3). However, this is an immense understatement; myth is a rich and interpretive source of information. Its value lies in the interpretation of its relationship with humanity and how it influenced, or was influenced by ancient society and culture. Myth has persisted to fascinate people by exploring the meeting place between human desires and morals. Myth uses symbolic characters and fantastic stories to portray the truths and complexities of what it means to be human.
Throughout our lives, we have heard many stories about the creation of earth and humans. Whether they are religious based, myths, folk tales, or stories passed on through generations; they all have a common purpose which is to explain how everything came to be. In the myth, The Creation of the Universe and Human Beings, the creation of earth is explained through two gods that essentially “fashioned” heaven and earth, as well as a goddess named Nu Kua that created human beings. Throughout this story there is a common theme of creation, and the explaining of how earth and human beings were created. Although this is a Chinese culture based myth, it still holds many similarities and relevance to our world today. We all have our own idea or belief
Folklorists explained that classical myths are handed down from oral stories, for children and some adults have other adults tell
In prehistoric cultures myths are stories which are passed down from the generation to generation, stories that have been told in the earlier centuries, and have been very popular in the world for a very long time. It helps people know further about the culture and what their family from diverse cohorts had to go through. A myth is sporadically based on a true occasion but, usually, it is just a story that has been made up to allow people to learn something significant or meaningful.
