This paper examines how Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) can help create an organization’s competitive edge. As technology advances, organizations can realize the benefits of an HRIS. HRIS would allow for the human resource function to become more efficient and to provide better information for decision-making. In doing so, HRIS is key to an organization’s competitive advantage. HRIS software programs include Oracle PeopleSoft applications, Inform Human Capital Management and SAP ERP Core Human Resources. (Ivancevich, J. M., & Konopaske, R. 2013) Human resource managers, department heads and managers, and employees all benefit from an HRIS. Human resource managers can utilize an HRIS for reporting and compliance, payroll administration, compensation analysis, benefit administration, applicant tracking and to access employee skills. HR managers along with department heads and managers can use an HRIS for performance management and appraisal, recruitment and resume processing, team and project management, training, and employee development. The employee self-service application enables individuals to manage their benefits and retirement options, view and print historical pay statements and tax statements, can provide training materials for employees, can be used as a resource for legal notices, and can assist employees in their professional development.
