Purpose of Agency The Mississippi Department of Human Services (MDHS)- Division of Family and Children’s Service (DFCS) is an agency that serves and protect children and families from neglect, abuse, exploitation, and many more services. Through this department, it provides security and reassurance of stability with a sense of belonging to children and families. In addition, this agency provides many workshops to improve the quality of life for children by focusing on the family’s ability to safely parent their children. In order to fulfill state regulations and requirements when dealing with families and children, drug test and visitations are done to make sure that problems within families are improving. This results in records that are …show more content…
Considering time is critically important in the effectiveness of this agency; I find that it would be helpful to inform the employees of this agency about time-management. Time-management is the process of controlling, planning and utilizing the amount of time spent on certain task within the workforce. Poor time-management could be due to procrastination. The benefits of this educational presentation would first identify where most of the employees spend most of time. Once you identify where most of your time is spent in a give day, strategies are formed to help prioritize …show more content…
Each of the employees obtains a degree of higher education; according to the supervisor most of the employees went to the University of Southern Mississippi for Social Work. During my observation, I noticed that it was predominantly women working at Division of Family and Children’s Service. In addition, I also noticed that most of them were middle-aged and low-middle class women. I would definitely say the ethnicity within this agency is very diverse. The fact this agency is majority women, could have positive or negative impact on our presentation in many ways. The fact that we are only observing them part of the time, the employees could feel that we observed during a time they were really flustered and had no choice for the outcome. In result, they can feel emperor compared to our outlook on the agency. Also a staff full of females could be the problem, because such strong personalities are working together as a system. The positive attributes of our presentation could impact them by increasing productivity, reducing stress, avoiding procrastination, and meeting deadlines through improved
The next article that was reviewed was focused on a service that is provided for parents struggling with substance abuse. The service is called Family Drug Court and is also referred to as FDC. The FDC is a child welfare court that specifically deals with parental substance abuse cases. This court system helps the parents quickly receive drug treatment that is needed, offers a more structured system for the parents and child, and also holds the parents to higher accountability for recovery. According to Margaret Lloyd, "Testa and Smith (2009) rigorously reviewed the literature and found that substance abuse is reported in 11-14% of investigated child welfare cases and in 50-79% of cases where the child is removed and placed in out-of-home care." The goal of the FDC is to
The Tennessee Department of Children’s Services was created in July 1996 by joining children’s services programs from six different departments. This merge occurred during a time when the Tennessee child welfare system was undergoing a massive crisis. The amount of children with significantly higher levels of needs were rising, warning the state to find ways to provide services for children in a more effective manner (www.tn.gov). The mission of DCS is to ensure forever families for children and youth by delivering high-quality, evidence-based services in partnership with the community (www.tn.gov). The vision statement of DCS is Tennessee’s children are safe, healthy, and back on track for success (www.tn.gov). The department’s ultimate responsibility is always to protect children from abuse and neglect. In order to uphold this responsibility, DCS case managers investigate allegations of abuse and neglect, and works with families to resolve issues that
The Department of Children and Families (DCF) is a strength-based agency that works with several different types of families and situations. The department works diligently to ensure that children are protected from neglect and/or abuse. As an intern at the Cape and island’s office, a majority of our cases involve substance use issues. When parents are using substances, this is a form of neglect as well as abuse depending on the scenario. One particular case of mine came to the attention of the department when a mother overdosed on Percocet’s and heroin with her child present. The child was 3 months old, alleging neglect from the mother. The department also charged father with alleging neglect as well since father denied mother having an
The current five step program enacted by the Department of Human Services is both inefficient and permissive, calling for minimal action and few opportunities for the reconnection of a family. Often times, case workers of the Department of Human Services (DHS) attempt to persuade young people into removal and treatment with no clear understanding of the challenges that the family faces. Case workers, although inclined to tell you they are there to keep the family together, often lead to tearing a family apart because of the lack of assistance offered by DHS. A study done by Roan Fairbairn and David Murray explored the gaps in care provided by DHS and its workers, with the outcomes of the youth involved; most importantly targeting how case workers interacted with young people, stating that “strategies that attempt to engage young people in a dialogue about their individual circumstances, including drug use, may be more effective than attempts to coerce them into treatment.” They go on to explain that “practioners with the best intentions intervene and inadvertently cause more harm for the clients than if they had not acted at all.” (Fairbairn and Murray 18) Little is available in terms of a nationwide change. In recent years, a call to action has been released with a keen eye on the lack of progress made by DHS to change their system. The Children’s Bureau is one of many organizations that plan to tackle this issue head on. Upon review of DHS it was discovered that of the
I believe that an internship in either Human Services or Health Sciences will be an an exceptional way to see firsthand what I have been reading in textbooks and discussing in class for the last year. I have always had a particular interest in the clinical side of psychology, so given the choice I would like to shadow a practicing professional rather than spend time "behind the scenes" or in a lab, which in turn will give me hands on experience with patients and a better understanding of psychological disorders and issues. Through such interactions I hope to fully display my communication, analytical, and problem solving skills and eventually put them to the test. I hope to gain not just the experience of the work life, but also I want to learn
Interventions are widely used in all areas of Human Services to assist those in need meet their goals of self sufficiency. Some common interventions include reframing, the process of helping someone see a situation in another perspective, and Task-Centered Approach, the process of breaking down the problem into smaller and more manageable goals, that eventually lead to solving the original problem. Determining which intervention to use widely depends upon multiple variables such as; the problem the client is currently facing, their current emotional status, whether they have a support network or not, and their current use of coping skills. If some of the above variables are missing, it has been common practice to address these issues prior to using interventions to address the problem.
The Human Service area that I am most interested in is Family and Child Services. After I graduate, I will be going to the nursing field so I feel that Family and Child Services is related to nursing. I instantly asked my roommate if she know anyone because she is currently going to school to become a Speech Pathologist and she works with children that have disabilities. I had the opportunity to interview Ariel Rogan, who is the Manager of Autism Behavioral Technicians, at Centria healthcare. She oversees five Autism Behavioral Technicians that conducts applied behavioral analysis therapy for children with autism spectrum disorder. She also interact with the clients from time to time. Children with autism are usually integrated with children that have typically development, which results in a high level of bullying amongst the children with this disability. I believe this organization is special because it help children with disabilities cope and improve with developments.
My target group for this assignment is African – American men. I encounter members of this group on daily basis, and would like to learn more about this particular group’s workplace experience as it relates to diversity; more precisely if they are experiencing different treatment due to their ethnicity and gender. Even though I encounter members of this group on daily basis, I do not work with members of this group and have not in my previous jobs. I have very little understanding of their views and experiences pertaining to work environment. This group differs from me in two dimensions: gender and ethnicity. This is a distinct group for this essay since I am Caucasian and female. I grew up in Albania and moved to the United States when
CPS spoke to social worker Millie Khemiri at the Family Assessment Program (FAP). Ms. Khemiri reported that the source came to FAP requesting services for the child Wellington. Ms. Khemire reported that the source reported that Wellington smokes marijuana and drinks alcohol. CPS inquired if the mother reported that the child frequently visit a family on Utica Ave. Ms. Khemire stated yes and reported that the mother had a GPS tracker locating the child on Utica Ave. CPS asked Ms. Khemiri if the child reported smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol at the family home. Ms. Khemire stated that the child didn’t disclose smoking marijuana or drinking at the family
I think when a Social Worker comes to one home and they show respect the Social Worker and the family should get alone just fine. I think Social Workers might have someone every now and than don't want Social Workers into their home but we as Human Services workers one have to find a way to deal with these type of people to make sure no bigger problem occur. People can't control the reactions of someone else. I learn doing my younger days only person we can control is ourselves. Once a person learn that a person could only control their self they can handle situation
Working in Education and Human Service careers means that we will be working with other people, some who might end up seeming rude. I agree with what the doctor said, I cannot assume someone is trying to be rude. As a teacher, I cannot take rude students or parents personally. I especially cannot react like the receptionist Ericka who was crying. I have to remain calm, even when I feel like someone is trying to be hostile or rude. The same situation might happen between future students of mine. Misunderstandings can easily occur between students that are in elementary school. A student might become upset because they believe a classmate was being rude, but the classmate might not have even been trying to come across as rude.
I disagreed with standard code-22 to the exact possible human service professional is adhered to commitments made to their employee and the reason why I disagree would be that I very much understand that as human service worker your responsibility is to your employer but at the same time it is to your client it is our responsibility to help them to the best we can weather for example what about if they have an issue with drugs and alcohol you want to assure that your client is safe and try your best to assist them with the right help they need and seek treatment for them to try and bring them to a healthy place in life where they are stable and drug and achol free.
“Human services is a broad term covering a number of careers, but all have one thing in common-the helping of people meet their basic physical and emotional needs for whatever reason cannot be met without assistance” (Martin, pg.4, 2011). To understand how humans function in society, a person needs to understand basic human needs. These needs vary from person to person, however, all persons in society have a need and human services can help provide that.
The FS family came to the agency's attention on 03/03/16 (prior to the PUR) for a report of physical abuse/passive physical abuse against the mother and unspecified physical abuse by the mother’s paramour with the alleged child victim being the oldest child in the family. Although the allegations were not substantiated, the agency held a multidisciplinary staffing due to the family having multiple investigations and non-accepted reports. The multidisciplinary staffing recommendations were to refer the family for voluntary Family Services program and to contact service providers for information. The family was opened on 5/2/2016 in Family Services. The family household consisted of the mother and her 2 children. The 2nd child’s father resided
The case records and interviews indicated the agency did not make a concerted efforts to assess and address risk and safety fully because private home visits were not conducted on a monthly basis with the children, the Assessment of Family Functioning (AFF) assessment was not updated, and the case plan (the only one for this family was on 9/25/15) was not updated after the initial assessment; however, the agency provided safety related services of ongoing referrals to and monitoring of substance abuse treatment services, provided transportation to services, drug screens (12/17/15, 3/04/16, 4/29/16, 7/21/16, 8/24/16, 11/22/16, and 3/03/17), monitoring of mental health treatment, and informally assessed the live-in
