Human Service Careers

Working in the social services field was always my dream. Whether working with children, family, adults, elderly etc. this career path is so broad it instills the hope of a career opportunity. My first year working in this field was in 2010 when I interned as an intake specialist in an outpatient drug treatment facility, while completing my bachelor’s degree in human services. Thereafter, I was able to branch off in various areas such as a case manager at a domestic violence shelter, housing specialist, substance abuse counselor and now a family services specialist.

There are several goals that I hope to achieve by pursuing a graduate degree in Social Work. Pursuing a MSW will provide me with the knowledge, tools, and skills-set that will be fundamental to the achievement my career goals outlined below.

I chose social working as my career because many other people go through tough situations and have a difficult time talking to relatives or friends to help them through a tough situation. I thought of becoming a social worker so I can have the ability to change the lives of others. Social work is one of those careers you can truly make a difference in people’s lives. I want to become a social worker because life isn’t about just helping yourself it’s about helping others as well, which is what social workers do for a living. As a human service worker some basic skill that I would assist a client would be helping them to be more self-sufficient through learning new skills. I would also recommend them to different resource that would assist them as they work to overcome setbacks in life. I would work closely with client to evaluate their supportive systems ensuring they are in line with their everyday needs. A good plan of action would be put in place after the client have been evaluated according to his or her disorder for helping with assistance or coordinating certain services that are put in place for a client needs. I would also provide emotional support to foster a good working relationship in order for my client to feel comfortable when discussing their problems

In America, there are social and human service assistant workers hiring in many departments and different fields.The wages are good as a career. According to onetonline.net, the employment in 2014 had 387,000 human assistant employees and the median wages in 2015 was $14.82 hourly and $30,830 annual(onetonline.net). More than wages, there are certain things that people should be aware of. In order to become a social and human service assistant, it is important to understand the education required, the role of the responsibilities, and the future outlook of the profession.

From since I was a young child I have always wanted to go into the field of Human Services. As I have grown I have decided that I would go into the Criminal Justice side of Human Services. By this I mean that I still want to help people, but I want to help people who have become criminals or who are on the path of becoming criminals. I especially want to help children and teens who have been in and out of a Juvenal Detention Center. From this passion I have decided that I want to go into one of three careers. These careers are as follows; Juvenile Defense Attorneys, Juvenile Counselor, or Juvenile Corrections Officer.

Human Services is a career that serves and helps the people from the community in time of crisis. Human Services helpers are designed to help people through crisis or chronic situations where the person feels they need help and guidance to move forward with their life and rediscover their personal power. People sometimes need help with food or housing the loss of job, and getting out of dangerous situation for example domestic violence, drug abuse. Some people also face an internal challenge such as depression, a physical or mental disability or a health crisis. As a human services helper we are there to assist people meet their needs and get them the services and support that they need.

As I started to read the required material for the first week in the book. It stated that if you are looking to make a lot of money human services is not the career of choice. I started to think, people who make six figure are not happy because they decided on a career basic on the salary. In life it is all about happiness, don’t get me mislead money plays a big part in everything. But happiness is the key living a long life, choosing a career because of money simply will make a people not love their career. Working with abuse and neglect children is a reward to the children. Children that are abuse and neglect will love to see that someone in the world do care for them. I have heard many conversation about how human service workers have help different abuse and neglect children. Later on in life the children got in touch with them and let the human service workers know they were bless to have them come into there life to help them during the time they was in need. How amazing is that to be appreciated ?

The human service worker recognizes that productive team work is essential for an organization’s progress. A 2006 survey found that 91% of high-level managers view teams as essential to the organization’s goals, and a 2012 review found that teams provided 35% of the organization’s work (Harley-McClaskey, 2017). The leader takes actions to build the team, such as telling people about it to find potential members and to get assistance developing it. He or she searches for members who possess the necessary skills and offers training to those who have the potential to learn. Members must agree to pursue the goals, which advance the organization, over self-interests. A team has developed roles, strategies, and goals. In contrast, a work group is a potential team because members are still developing these components. Some work groups transform into teams over 6 - 9 months. A leader can assess a work group or team’s developmental stage and encourage growth (Harley-McClaskey, 2017).

Starting from being a certified nursing assistant, to becoming a unit secretary for a hospital that specialize in wound care, I have always known that I wanted to help individuals in need. However, I noticed that I was not happy with helping individuals in medical need. It wasn’t until I decided to continue my education that I introduced to the world of social work. Going up with a single mother that suffered from drug abuse, my family depended on social services for a lot of assistance, from everything such as food stamps to family counseling. This life experience helped guide my thoughts on pursuing social work as a career. I know that I want to help individuals that are down on their luck, but I want to take it one step farther, by providing individual counseling to adults that may need more one on one time, than what is normally given from a social service agency. Counseling will also give me a chance to do what I love most and that is to talk and get to know the individuals that I am helping make like changing decisions. Working as a clinical social work has my interest because it does not put limits on what I can do or who I can help, and it will set me up for my future goal of becoming a licensed clinical social worker. Being my own boss and changing my community is my dream job, opportunity and goal.
