The career choice out of the several different descriptions in this week’s reading for me would be an Evaluator. This person is trained to make through assessment of a need to continue with certain nonprofit agencies. This position is a key benefit to the human services career field, without this person there would be numerous amount of money wasted on nonprofit agency that aren’t helping people with their problems. evaluator is need simply because some programs are useless and they need to be cut because they are wasting money.

The purpose of this interview is to explore human service professional in their work environment, and observe human service professional in their particular settings, what type of education is required for their position of choice. The human services profession has a variety of populations that they serve; this is a wide array of people. Human service professionals serve populations such as, high-risk mothers who may have shortfalls in education, psychosocial, nutritional, and little or no transportation. The Human Services profession is a wide and vast field of occupation that provides support to various people in various situations. From an Alcohol Counselor, to a Social Work Assistant, the Human Services professional proves to be a vital career. For my interview assignment I chose Amada Miller, a Family Services Worker who works for the City of Norfolk in the Human Services Department in Norfolk, Virginia. As a Family Services Worker, Amanda Miller is specializes in providing help to families in a majority of ways. After Interviewing Amanda, her insight and advice she gave to me made me consider going into the Human Services Field.

The Human Service field can be trying to individuals now and again and compensating too in different snapshots of one's profession. As I was growing up, I always wanted to help others in any way that I could. I began working in the medical field once I graduated high school. I began working for my local department of Social Services two years ago, and have since decided to further my education in Human Services. Having a background in human services is a benefit. If a person did not have a background in human service they probably would not have chosen to be in this field. Their background could have been what put them in their career. I wish that everyone had a perfect childhood, but that will never happen and the past cannot be altered so it’s best to look at the positive side about having a background in human services in order to create a better future. Sometimes people become so overwhelmed about a situation thats already over, although it can be hard most of the time the only thing that a person can do is to learn from their experiences and utilize it to help others. I had conducted an in-person interview with Mr. Steven Brenner, the director of SCO family services St. Christopher Ottilie treatment facility, located at 85-70 148th street, queens, NY. Mr. Brenner who has achieved his Master’s Degree in Social Work embodies all the skills and characteristics that make a human service professional effective. Throughout the 31 years of Mr. Brenner’s career in human services, he has enforced a social and physical environment that promotes good health for all adolescents. He Promotes great quality of life, strength, healthy development, and healthy behaviors for all clients. Mr. Brenner stated, “we take the children that nobody wants”, and with that statement, I was captivated.

Starting from being a certified nursing assistant, to becoming a unit secretary for a hospital that specialize in wound care, I have always known that I wanted to help individuals in need. However, I noticed that I was not happy with helping individuals in medical need. It wasn’t until I decided to continue my education that I introduced to the world of social work. Going up with a single mother that suffered from drug abuse, my family depended on social services for a lot of assistance, from everything such as food stamps to family counseling. This life experience helped guide my thoughts on pursuing social work as a career. I know that I want to help individuals that are down on their luck, but I want to take it one step farther, by providing individual counseling to adults that may need more one on one time, than what is normally given from a social service agency. Counseling will also give me a chance to do what I love most and that is to talk and get to know the individuals that I am helping make like changing decisions.
