Animal testing. These simple two words together creates multiple atrocious connotations such as inhumane, cruel, and popular form of research. However, this is not the case and it overshadow the benefits of such testing. These benefits include numerous treatments and cures which have saved millions of lives. Yet, animal testing is not the only means of research and, when possible, researchers do use other methods. For example, according to the California Biomedical Research Association, when feasible, researchers use numerous non-animal related research methods such as computer models and tissue/cell samples. Computer models are commonly used to determine the toxic level of a substance, and is a common research tool for scientists (“Why Are Animals”). In spite of such advance technology, animal testing is needed due to the complexity of the body system and multiple topics cannot be studied via computer model or petri dish such as blindness. Therefore, while many still believe that it is inhumane, animal testing is a necessary means to develop new life-saving medicines and vaccinations for both people and animals.
By using animal testing, researchers have developed life-saving treatments that help us carry on with our everyday lives. Throughout history, numerous cures have been found with the help of animals.
