Bears in Florida will be having a bad week in October thanks to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) approval of a bear hunt Wednesday. This hunt is Florida’s first in more than two decades. It aims to control increasing bear populations and human-to-bear conflict.
WHY THE FWC APPROVED THE BEAR HUNT
According to the FWC, hunting supports keeping population size in check, fewer bears being pushed into neighborhoods and increasing wariness and fear of humans. Bears were removed from Florida’s threatened species list in 2012. About 300 bears are expected to be killed by an unlimited number of permitted hunters. Florida has an estimated 3,150 black bears in four regions — the eastern Panhandle, Northeast Florida, east-central Florida and South Florida — where the hunts would be conducted, according to the Panama City New Herald. The numbers are based on 2002 estimates for the eastern Panhandle and South Florida, and a 2014 count in the Northeast Florida and east-central Florida regions.
RULES OF THE BEAR HUNT
Bear permits are $100 for Florida residents and $300 for non-residents, according to the FWC. Permit sales end midnight on the night before the seven-day hunting season, which begins Oct. 24 and runs until the 30th. There is a

Kate MacFall, Florida state director for The Humane Society of the United States, said in a statement, “By sanctioning a trophy hunt on bears in lieu of effective solutions on human-bear conflicts, the FWC has ignored sound science, responsible wildlife management and the majority of Floridians who oppose a hunt on this highly vulnerable and rare sub-species of bear, found nowhere else in the world outside its range.” She said the society will continue to oppose the hunt, which she says is unjustified and will likely lead to inhumane practices like hounding and baiting in the near
In the article “Florida’s Winnie the Pooh deathfest”, the author, Daniel Ruth, talks about a bear hunt that went on in Florida because there were too many bears. Rick Sajko killed two of these hunted bears stating “I have been waiting 20 some-odd years to kill a bear in Florida.” The states Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission issued 3,778 licenses to do away with 320 bears and stored $300,000 in license fees. The FWC issued that many licenses out without knowing the exact number of bear’s population. It took only two days to fulfill this task, for which the FWC ended the hunt. There had been five nonfatal attacks on the people across the state. The author states that it did not seem as if the bears were behaving badly. Four of the attacks were simply the bears getting into easy accessed garbage cans. The other attack was a not so smart woman that tried to hand feed a bear, and believed she was a bear whisperer, but soon found out that she was misled. The
What do the Koyukon Indians have to know to successfully hunt a bear in the early winter?
On Saturday night, August 29th, a bear reportedly attacked two men. The incident occurred around 8pm, northwest of Cochrane in an area known as Ghost public land use zone. One of the victims of the bear attack told EMS paramedics that he was riding an all-terrain vehicle, and the other man was on a dirt bike, when they encountered a bear and cubs. “The bears attacked them knocking them from their vehicles. They had to deploy bear spray, and in a short time, the bear and the cubs departed the vicinity.” Says Adam Loria with EMS. “We heard something,” says Cam Steffen. “We weren’t sure if it was the cows and then it got louder. We heard it again and it was someone calling for help.” In the next couple minutes, EMS responded to an along Highway
In 1974 bear estimates were between 300 and 400 bears, in 2002 just eight years later with the help of Central Florida Farmers Association approximately 132,000 acres were set aside for bear habitation. Due to these and the efforts groups like TreeHuggerofAmerica, Defender.org and the FWC (Florida Wildlife Commission) the bear population started growing and growing and growing. From three to five hundred in 1974 to a little over three thousand in 2002. As of 2015 the current estimates are four thousand three hundred fifty bears and the amount of human / bear contact has
Recently in Florida, gentlemen and women have been talking about the up-stirring event that has taken place. Most men and women who hunt are accompanied by their dogs while hunting for creatures such as birds, deer, beavers, raccoons, cougars, etc. When you see a hunter or pictures of hunters, you usually see a dog/dogs with those hunters. In Florida, hunting is a big deal. Not just any kind of hunting though, this is a special kind of hunting. Florida is full of large snakes and large reptiles called alligators and crocodiles—in the South this is their kind of hunting.
The hunters aren’t really arguing for their right to hunt bears; they’re fighting for their freedom. They see hunting as their livelihood. Hunting keeps the population in check and keeps bears from attacking children or raiding farms. With too many bears,
Also, the government wanted to step in and help the economy, so bounties were set in order to encourage the hunting of the creatures. Communities began to see the "bounty hunters" as heroes, and these men felt as such. The attitude towards wolves spiraled out of control, causing hunts based on vengeance and hatred, and inhumane practices of poisoning, trapping, and torturing began. Even a former governor of Alaska, Jay Hammond, felt that flying in a plane and shooting down hundreds of wolves was necessary to protect the citizens of the state. Wolf furs were coveted, the animals were loathed, and the image of the wolf as a cowardly murderer stuck based on old-fashioned beliefs and legend-based fears. Nothing was done to stop the practices, and the hunts continued to be encouraged, until there were basically no wolves left to hunt (Lopez 139-145). It was nearly too late once the problem was noticed, but the government finally stepped in to address the problem. The wolves were going extinct, and it became clear that the animals were an important part of the ecosystem. The timber (gray) wolf was placed on the endangered species list, and severe consequences were put into action for anyone who hunted the animals illegally. The Wisconsin DNR began a very carefully regulated action plan to reintroduce the wolf to the state, which included radio collars and careful tracking of the animals in order to monitor their progress, as well as make sure they stay in
Today, Louisiana has made extraordinary rescues with species that were once considered threatened or endangered. Due to safe planning and the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service projected to remove the Louisiana Black Bear from the list of threatened species. In May 2015, approximately 350 black bears to 600 black bears existed in Northern Louisiana in which $900,000 was invested to restore its population. Severe habitat loss of the black bear is what initially led to the decline in the population. In 1992, the Louisiana Black Bear was placed on the list of endangered and threatened species and in May 2015, they were officially removed (Wildlife Division - Texas Parks and Wildlife Department,
Unfortunately, these bears are losing critically important foods, especially when craving something larger than their usual diet. Cutthroat trout, Whitebark pine seeds, and Elk populations have decreased, leaving bears in
Trophy hunting is an ongoing issue, there are 500,000 black bears in Canada. 29,300 are bears that are legal to kill every year. Activist not in favor of the bear killings try to stop bear hunter but do sometimes go overboard. About 15 activists have been charged but the charges have been dropped. Many bear hunters do kill for fun and for the thriller of it. This does cause a resistance to authority because many believe it is unfair to why bears are being killed for no reason, and how many of the bear hunters are
Gun laws and regulations in Florida control the sale, ownership, and use of firearms and ammunition in Florida.
Alright so maybe this is a cruel topic but let's face it, the bear hunters that particpated in New Jersey probably had more fun than anybody playing Deer Hunter 2014. New Jersey's open season on bears has opened and the citizens over there sure got a lot of them. This, no doubt, led to many protesters against it. Maybe they should go play Deer Hunter and see if the real thing would be more fun!
The polar bear lives up in the Arctic region where global warming and climate change are melting the ice caps that the bears thrive on. They use the ice as a platform from hunting and rest. The random pocket holes in the ice, where the seals pop up at, is where the polar bear catches its prey. With this reduction of ice, “the abundance of seals, and increases the amount of energy and time needed for hunting, leaving less energy for reproduction” (Endangered Species and Habitats).
There are so many consequences because of global warming and humans polluting. As a result of global warming, the polar bear habitat is getting demolished. The warmer temperatures are melting the ice in the Arctic and North Pole. Polar bears are travelling miles and miles to find ice. Polar bears live, eat, and raise their cubs on Arctic ice, which is breaking up and melting at an alarming rate. Year by year, this problem will get worse and worse. Humans and factories throw away their waste in the ocean and it goes in the water the fish and animals drink. Polar bears eat fish and they are affected by this polluted water as well. Hunters kill many animals including the polar bears and it’s decreasing their population. When polar bear population decreases, other animal populations will rise and the animal chain will change. We should not let global warming take over our species and destroy the animal chain. Polar bears are one of the many animals affected and if there are too many animals affected, the whole animal chain will fall apart. Research shows that, even if steps are taken to reduce emissions now, gases already in the atmosphere will continue to heat up the earth for another 40 to 50 years. Scientific statistics indicate they may suffer extinction by year 2100. We still have many years to make a
Bear is a true carnivore, but if not prevented the black bear could be a huge problem to humans.
