Human trafficking is the exploitation of humans to make money. There are more slaves today than ever in history. Most times victims are trafficked by people they know, trust and love like friends and family.

What is human trafficking? Human trafficking is a modern-day slavery, which involves the use of force, fraud, or obtaining some type of labor sex act. Every year, thousands of women, men, and children in countries all over the world are trafficked. Human trafficking is a hidden crime where victims hardly come forward for help because of the language they speak, fear of the traffickers and the fear of law enforcement. More border regulation should be in place to reduce human trafficking in the United States because the percent of victims are increasing every year, it is the third largest international crime industry, and the impact it has on the environment.

Before going too deep into this issue, everyone should understand what human trafficking is. Human trafficking is the illegal movement of people, typically for the purposes of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation.This may include providing a spouse in a forced marriage or the extraction of organs or tissues. Yuri Fedotov, the head of the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, said,“At any one time, 2.4 million people suffer the misery of this humiliating and degrading crime.” It is estimated that only one out of 100 victims of trafficking are ever rescued.

In today’s world, people believe that all enslavement or forced labor of any kind has quietly deceased over the years, that all types of enslavement are behind modern societies and totally in the past, yet it has been exactly the opposite. It is also not likely that a person being trafficked is only enduring this for a few months and then is set free; people are victims for multiple years, possibly even decades. Human trafficking is still a serious threat to innocent lives across the planet because rates are increasing, people are stuck in that vicious cycle for years, and it is damaging millions of people everyday.

It makes the processes of recruiting, transporting, hiding and holding, and finally receiving a person through a use of force, coercion, false promise, and monies for the purpose of exploiting them. In recent times, the number of human trafficking cases has skyrocketed through the roof. So, what exactly is human trafficking? Human trafficking is defined as a criminal activity, in which people are recruited, harboured, transported, bought or kidnapped for the purposes of exploitation. These exploitations include forced labour, child soldiery, sexual slavery, forced marriages and so on. Statistics show that the main victims of human trafficking consist of women and young girls while children come in a close third (Appendix A). Over the years, human trafficking has become rampant worldwide as the demand for human labour and sex slaves drastically multiplies due to the Internet.
